Chapter Three: What Happened in Homeroom?

Within five minutes, Makenna and Jessica sat in their homeroom classroom with their teacher, Mrs. Hector, waiting for their report cards. They were lucky; they had Jimmy Carter in their homeroom. Great, when Makenna's morning couldn't get any worse with him, they had to be given their report cards. Makenna failed. She knew she did. She was in danger of going to summer school with Jimmy. Jessica was a much better student than she and him. Unlike Jimmy and her, she passed all her classes. Makenna didn't really care about school and grades as long as she had her phone, nail polish, and Peter Nelson.

Mrs. Hector soon stood from her desk and clapped her hands. "Students, may I please have your attention?"

The students didn't hear. They were too busy chitchatting.

Mrs. Hector sighed and pushed her glasses closer to the bridge of her nose. She reached into her purse and pulled out a mallet, banging it on the face of the table. As she banged it, she said, "Order, order!" as if they were in a courtroom.

The students calmed down and focused on her, except Makenna and Jimmy.

Makenna messed with her nails, and Jimmy eyed her with raised eyebrows, mouthing, "Fairy Girl."

Ignoring them, Mrs. Hector announced, "Attention, students. Because I was in such a rush this morning, I forgot to grab the report cards from my mailbox. Therefore, I am going to run to the office and get them. Until I return..." She pointed at the Promethean board, where assignments in all classes had been written down. "I want you to pull out your planners and jot down these assignments. When I return with the report cards, I will call each of you individually. You will show me your planner, and I'll give you your report card. Does that sound fair?"

The students, not including Makenna and Jimmy, nodded. "Yes, ma'am."

"Good," Mrs. Hector said. "I'll be right back." After that statement, she scooted out of the room.

Students pulled out their planners and started to write. As they wrote, they chitchatted with each other.

Makenna was the only one who didn't have her planner out. She was too busy texting on her phone. Every once in a while, she peered at Jessica, who carefully wrote assignments in her planner. Makenna scoffed. She didn't have time for this rubbish.

Focusing on her phone's screen again, she took a selfie and admired herself. "Oh yeah, Makenna Delling, you are one beautiful girl." She fluffed her hair and prepared to take another selfie when Jimmy Carter opened his big mouth.

"Hey, Fairy Girl, what will you do about your report card?"

"Shut up, Jimmy," Makenna said. She placed her phone on her desk's face and turned to Jimmy. Her fingers gripped the top of the chair.

Standing, Jimmy approached Makenna's desk and crossed his arms. "I can't wait for us to be in summer school together. We'll have lots of fun together, eh, Fairy Girl?"

"'Fairy Girl,'" Makenna mimicked. She stood and clenched her fist. "I said shut up!"

Heads turned to the two teenagers.

Trying to remain calm, Jessica reached for Makenna's arm and asked, "Hey, why can't we just get along?" She grasped her friend's arm and tried to sit her down. "Sit down, Makenna."

Makenna glared. "Don't touch me!" She ripped her arm free, and Jessica gasped.

Jimmy Carter chuckled.

A small group of students had formed around the fairy and bully, and a few kids whispered, "Fight, fight, fight, fight!"

Makenna was ready for a fight. She could whoop Jimmy's butt any time. He deserved a good butt-kicking. She would give him something worse than just a flock of doves.

Jimmy noticed Makenna's anger and laughed, saying, "Watch out," holding up his hands. "I made the fairy mad!"

"I'm not a fairy!" Makenna snapped. She lifted her fists. "Bring it on, Jimmy!"

Jimmy rolled up his sleeves and cracked his knuckles. He stepped closer and said, "I can now see why Peter Nelson isn't inviting you to the Spirit Week Dance next week."

"Shut up!" Makenna shouted. She tackled Jimmy, and the students gasped, including Jessica.

Makenna and Jimmy wrestled on the ground, and Makenna held him by the arms.

Jimmy pushed her off and grabbed her ponytail, starting to pull it.

Lifting her foot, Makenna kicked him in the chest and knocked him to the ground.

"Oh!" some students shouted.

"Makenna!" Jessica shouted. She jumped from her seat and wrapped her arms around Makenna's body, starting to pull her away from Jimmy.

Makenna screamed and tried to break free. She succeeded, and the second she was free, she yelled again and was lifted into the sky. Her entire body, including her necklace pendant, glowed up blue. Bringing her hands forward, a bright blue light escaped them and pushed Jimmy into the wall.

Still yelling, Makenna closed her eyes and extended her arms. "I can't control this! Help! Jessica!" Waves of blue lights shot in every direction, and students screamed, diving under their desks.

Jimmy pointed at Makenna and shouted, "The fairy's gone mad!"

Mrs. Hector soon reentered the classroom, her arms full of report cards, and said, "Okay, students, here are your—ah!" She screamed at the sight of all the chaos. "What in the world?" Hugging the report cards close, she, too, dove under a desk.

After a bit, Makenna calmed down and fell to her knees, taking deep breaths. Her necklace pendant stopped glowing.

When Makenna opened her eyes, she gasped at what she saw. The room was a mess! Books, papers, planners, etc. were everywhere, and all the students, including the teacher, cowered under desks. Makenna didn't remember what happened, though. She even asked, "Wait, what happened?"

"Whoa," Jessica shakily said.

"Geez, Delling," Jimmy Carter said from under his desk, "you really are a freak."

"But I," Makenna said in a choked voice. "I don't even know what I just did." She was telling the truth, too. She stepped back. She had to figure this mystery out and knew the perfect place to think. With tears streaming down her cheeks, she grabbed her backpack and sprinted out of the classroom into the hallway.

She could hear Mrs. Hector calling after her. "Makenna, wait!"

Makenna was too scared to go back. Why did this happen to her at the beginning of the day? Something was seriously wrong with her.

She ran by the line of Ninth Grade lockers and halted at the door of the girl's bathroom. Makenna hoped that nobody was inside. She wanted to be alone.

Checking her blue wristwatch, Makenna saw that first period, Algebra, started in ten minutes. She had plenty of time.

Dropping her hand, she grabbed her arm and massaged it. As she did, she tried to hold back her tears, but they kept falling. One teardrop entered her mouth, and Makenna tasted its saltiness. She continued to massage her arm. When she finally stopped, she dropped her hand and opened the bathroom door.

Makenna faced a wall. Stepping into the bathroom, she closed the door and shivered. It was colder in the bathroom than in her classroom and hallway. Makenna's fingertips gripped the end of the wall, and she peeked out at the actual bathroom.

Like most school bathrooms, it was disgusting, but at least it was an ideal place to think.

Makenna rubbed tears from her eyes and stepped out from behind the wall. She placed her backpack on the sinks. Directly behind her was a line of bathroom stalls.

Makenna pushed her backpack off to the side. She took a deep breath and leaned close to the mirror, but she only saw a regular, fourteen-year-old girl. The scent of perfume overtook her nose, indicating that someone else had recently been in the bathroom. Makenna tried to answer all the questions that swam in her brain, but nothing came to the old noggin.

Groaning, she asked, "What is happening to me?" and turned her head, examining the pointy ear. She then turned her head the other way and checked her other ear. Boy, she did look like a freak. She had one pointy ear and one round ear. How was she supposed to hide her pointy ear? She could take her hair out of the ponytail, but she didn't like wearing her hair down. She liked wearing it up because she thought she looked more "beautiful".

Makenna soon peered down at her necklace pendant and gasped, creasing her eyebrows. It was her necklace! Her necklace was the reason why all this weirdness was happening! She had to take it off. Makenna nodded. Yeah, she loved her necklace, but she didn't want it to change her anymore. Therefore, young Makenna reached for the pendant and tried to pull it off, but like when she was seven years old, blue lightning bolts escaped it, and the necklace shocked her.

Yelling, Makenna fought the pain and tried to pull off the necklace but failed. She couldn't do it. Every time she tried pulling the necklace off, it shocked her.

Makenna yelled with frustration. Then, suddenly, she didn't feel her feet on the ground. She was slowly lifting into the sky like a balloon let loose.

Makenna started to freak out. Letting go of her necklace, she grabbed the sinks to prevent herself from floating to the ceiling. Her legs were held high in the sky, and her ponytail waved like she was swimming in the ocean. Makenna tried telling herself that this was nothing more than a mere dream. In reality, she was probably still in her homeroom, getting ready to kick Jimmy Carter's butt. However, Makenna had to deal with this until the dream was over. She had to deal with the fact that she was hovering in midair, holding onto the bathroom's sinks.

Peering down at her hands, Makenna gasped when, suddenly, her fingernails changed color. They changed to blue. Then they changed to black and back to blue. Makenna's fingers soon became sweaty, and they started to slip, her saying, "No, no, no!" She tried to hold on but failed. Her fingers slipped, and she caught an updraft to the ceiling. Freaking out, Makenna flapped her arms and shouted, "Help! Help! I can't get down! Jessica, Mrs. Hector, please!" She tried to float back to the ground, but something, perhaps her necklace, wouldn't let her.

Under her breath, Makenna said, "This could be bad." She gasped when she heard pounding feet outside in the hallway, sprinting toward the girl's bathroom.

Then she heard Mrs. Hector's voice. "Makenna! Makenna, where are you?"

Makenna gasped again. "Mrs. Hector!" she yelled. "I'm in here! I'm in the girl's bathroom! Hurry!"

Soon, the door to the bathroom opened, and Mrs. Hector, along with Jessica, entered it and searched for Makenna. They tilted their heads up and gasped at her hovering at the ceiling.

Smiling nervously, Makenna said, "And while you're down there, Mrs. Hector and Jessica, can you bring me two Sunny Side Up Eggs and a glass of orange juice, please?"

"Makenna!" Jessica said, shocked. She crossed her arms. "Aren't you a little old to be playing Peter Pan?"

"I think my condition's getting worse," Makenna told her. "I can't get down! I'm trapped!"

Without taking her eyes off her student, Mrs. Hector nudged Jessica. "Jessica, go get the nurse and Dr. Medford."

"Yes, ma'am," Jessica said. She turned on her heel and hurried out of the bathroom.

Makenna and Mrs. Hector were left alone in it.

Mrs. Hector continued to stare at Makenna. She wasn't even blinking. She looked like a zombie.

There was an awkward silence between the teacher and her student, and finally, Makenna broke it by nodding and saying, "This is nice. I've always wanted to be trapped in the school bathroom. I—yikes!" Suddenly, she fell toward the ground. One minute ago, Makenna was floating in midair, and now she was hurtling toward the floor.

Gasping, Mrs. Hector yelled, "Makenna!" She hurried under her and held out her arms to catch her.

"Mrs. Hector, no!" Makenna shouted. She held out her hand. "Don't try to catch me!"

It was too late. Once again, Makenna's necklace pendant glowed red, and the blast of energy that got Peter got Mrs. Hector.

She yelled as she was thrown back and landed hard on the tile ground on her back.

"Mrs. Hector!" Makenna screamed. Her necklace changed to blue, and like when she was eleven years old, it caught her and slowly brought her back to the ground. Once Makenna's feet touched it, she gasped at the sight of her unconscious teacher. "Oh no!" She brought her hands to her mouth. "What have I done? Dr. Medford is going to be steamed!" Her fingernails changed from blue to black.

Soon, Jessica returned to the girls' bathroom with the nurse, Mrs. Edith, a tall, short-haired woman, and Dr. Medford, the principal, a slightly plump, gray-haired man who looked very strict.

All three people gasped at seeing Makenna and Mrs. Hector, and Mrs. Edith yelled, "Mrs. Hector!" She hurried to Mrs. Hector and kneeled.

After a bit, Makenna's teacher woke. Opening her eyes, she peered into Mrs. Edith's face. "Oh, Mrs. Edith, I just had a terrible nightmare."

"It's okay, dear," Mrs. Edith said. She helped Mrs. Hector sit and took her hand. "I'm right here."

"I'm doomed," Makenna said under her breath. "I'm going to go to juvenile jail. Oh, snap."

She tried to sneak away, but Dr. Medford, who was glaring, stopped her and said, "Miss Delling, come to my office."

"But I," Makenna protested, but Dr. Medford didn't let her finish.

"Now!" he sternly said.

Makenna jumped. Nodding, she said, "Yes, Dr. Medford." She followed him out of the bathroom and into the hallway.

"Dr. Medford, wait!" Mrs. Hector called from behind. Standing, she grabbed Jessica's wrist and dragged her into the hallway, where they met up with Dr. Medford and Makenna. They focused their attention on her. Mrs. Hector shook Jessica's wrist and added, "Jessica and I are coming with you. We will serve as Makenna's witnesses."

"We will?" Jessica nervously asked.

"Yes," said Mrs. Hector. She let Jessica go and glanced into her face. "We will."

Jessica gulped.

She and Mrs. Hector glimpsed at Dr. Medford, who rubbed his beard and said, "Very well, and perhaps together, we will figure out what to do with you, young Makenna. Whether to send you home, send you to class, or send you to court."

"Court?" Makenna asked. "Oh no, Dr. Medford." She held up her hands. "I'm too young to go to court. It was an accident! It was my necklace!"

"Oh, please," Dr. Medford said. "How dare you lie to me, Makenna!"

"She's not lying," Jessica said.

Dr. Medford, Mrs. Hector, Makenna, and Mrs. Edith, who had just exited the bathroom, glanced at her.

Jessica added, "She's telling the truth. Since the beginning of the week, she's been going through a rapid metamorphosis. Her necklace pendant suddenly became very protective of her, blasting anyone who gets too close to her."

"That's right," Makenna said. She glanced at Mrs. Hector. "And that's what happened to you, Mrs. Hector. I'm really sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you."

"You don't understand, Dr. Medford," Jessica said. "None of you adults do. Makenna's younger brother, Caleb, claims she is a fairy, and I'm starting to think he's right!"

"Jessica!" Makenna shouted. "How dare you mention f-a-i-r-y!"

Although Dr. Medford, Mrs. Edith, and Mrs. Hector clearly didn't believe Jessica, they remained calm, and Dr. Medford said, "Let's go to my office and discuss this matter. Thank you, Jessica."

Jessica nodded. "Of course, Dr. Medford."
