School of Fear
Story sequence:
Episode one:
A young girl slowly woke.
Blinking, she sat up, hearing food cooking. Wrapping her frilly pink robe around herself, she walked to the kitchen of her boarding school's dorm. Smiling as she entered, she saw the familiar figure, a tall girl with multicolored hair humming as she cooked.
"Hey, you're finally up. Cmon, classes start at nine."She greeted, grinning as she set a plate out before the sleepy girl as she plopped down in one of the chairs.
"Can't blame me, I'm an American."The girl yawned, and her taller friend rolled her eyes.
"An American who's been living in Japan for two years."
"Don't you talk, your hair is three different colors."
"What does that have to do with anything?"
The girl pouted, twirling a piece of her blond hair around her finger.
"I don't know... I'm tired..."
Her companion laughed, and patted her on the head, then began to walk off.
"I'm going to get ready, ok? Eat up and do the same thing when you finish."
"Ok, Yuki..."
--
Yuki Ain and Drew Aprolin made their way to the biggest building on campus, walking quickly, a bit late.
Like all students, they used the school uniforms to their advantage, and still looked like individuals despite the sameness. Yuki's uniform was crumpled, per usual, and she had the uniform jacket tied around her waist. She also had the top button on her shirt undone, but this was more out of necessity. It was too tight with all of them buttoned. Her hair was falling out of the required bun, and she lazily played with a blue strand.
Drew on the other hand, looked a lot more organized, and a lot less uncaring in her look. Her clothes were ironed to perfection, and there were bits of pink wherever she could put them. The hair tie in her bun was pink with a faux pink orchid tied in, she wore pink knee socks, and a pink necklace, and she had on pink glasses. Yet, all this was minor on her black and white uniform, to her annoyance.
"Which class do you hope to have?"Drew asked her roommate as they reached the building, holding her bag to her chest.
"I don't really care as long as you're in it."She said nonchalantly, glancing at the huge crowd as they stopped behind it. Drew went pink and looked away. "Hey, Drew. You still hoping for that Class of Fears thing?" Drew instantly piped up, stars practically in her eyes.
"Yeah, the Class of All Fears and Their Conditions! I really hope we signed up in time! I really want to learn about all the types of fears!"
"Yeah, it sounds interesting. I actually don't know much about fears. I'd like to learn."Yuki said causally, and didn't even react to her roommate's next move of freaking out.
"You don't?!"
Yuki was a child prodigy, gifted with the second highest IQ in the world. She could remember anything and everything she saw. That was why she was in this school, to hone that gift. Unfortunately, she could care less about the fact that she was literally a genius, and you wouldn't know if you just looked at her. She seemed more the type to be a dunce, what with her slightly uncaring attitude and casual way of doing everything.
'Maybe that's a side effect of being a genius', Drew thought. 'Maybe nothing surprises you when you know almost everything.'
--
The bell rang, and Yuki and Drew dashed into their designated class, nearly late, doughnuts in hand.
"I didn't realize they moved to the other side of the campus!"Drew panted, sitting down as the bell rang. "Sorry, Yuki..."
Yuki shrugged, sitting down besides her and leaning back in her chair.
"No skin off my nose,"She said in english, and Drew clapped lightly.
"Your accent's getting better!"She congratulated. Yuki gave her small friend a small grin.
The teacher came in. He was tall, but probably not as much as Yuki. He was handsome, the kind of teacher students fawned over, unless you were Yuki and Drew, who were only interested in each other.
"Good morning, class. I'm Mr. Willets. I came from Britain to teach, and I'm very glad to be here, to teach you all about fears. I only arrived a few months ealier, so if I make a cultural mistake, I'd like you all to feel free to correct me. Any questions?" He said briefly, with a pleasant smile.
A girl shyly raised her hand.
"Yes, miss...?"
"Dakouri."She answered, blushing and looking at her toes. "Are you married?"She inquired shyly.
"No, but I am engaged."He replied quite happily, thinking about his loved one with a smile on his face. The female students, and a few males subtly pouted.
"Anyway is that all?"No more hands were raised. "Good. Lets get started. Now, I'd like you all to--"
But suddenly, someone else burst in. She was strange looking. Her hair was bleach blonde, but looked dark and wet and tangled, as if she had been swimming for quite a while. Her skin had a blue glow to it, as if she had been underwater for a while. Her eyes were sunken in.
"Ah, hello. Are you in my class?"The teacher asked. The girl nodded. "Oh, that's good. Take your seat. You can answer my question first. What's your biggest fear? Your phobia, perhaps?"
Her voice sounded as if she had been coughing up seawater.
"Aquaphobia, the phobia of water."She spoke. The teacher tended up, and instantly, as she spoke the words, there seemed to be a rush of confusion over everyone in the room. Yumi watched as everyone blinked several times in confusion, looking around, though she stayed the same, as did the teacher. She looked over, and saw Drew frozen.
Worried, she put a hand on her shoulder and shook it lightly. Drew yelped gently, then smiled nervously at her.
"I'm fine."
Yumi wasn't convinced.
--
"Beach? No way! What are you thinking?!" That was the first outburst. It was still warm, and it was a good time for swimming, at this time of year. Yet... All the students were refusing to go to the beach... Or to go swimming in general...
"The water sure is scary... You don't know what's in it."There was that voice again, that raspy, seawater voice. Yumi had grown to dislike that voice, as it always seemed to be speaking to Drew, and just always seemed to be there. She wasn't jealous! It's just... That girl... She seemed to be making everyone fear the water... Drew, most of all.
There were a million more outbursts in just the next two days, and even though the new teacher didn't seem affected, he seemed stressed by all of this. Always muttering to himself whenever a new student presented their phobia as water. No one wanted to go near it. 'They're wasting an opportunity.'The teacher said simply as his excuse. And for the second time that week, Yumi was not convinced.
Then, it happened. Everyone disapeared. All the students. Including Drew. Yumi dissolved quickly into a mess of worry, skipping classes to search. And finally, she decided she needed to ask the most suspicious person for answers. Mr. Willets knew something. It was obvious.
She walked into class. It was eerily empty. The teacher sat at his desk, looking for something. Them suddenly, he stood up. Yumi moved into the shadows just in time, and he walked past, carrying a strange GPS looking device. She followed. She had to find Drew.
--
Yumi never believed in magic, or in the supernatural, or even in the divine, too deeply. For her, it was that they could exist, but she didn't have much evidence. But now, she believed in whatever was happening, because her teacher had just led her to a dark blue-green, swirling portal that seemed to be made of water. He tapped his watch nervously. He looked like he was going to jump in. She needed to act quickly.
"Mr. Willets! What's going on?!"She called, breaking into a run.
"Miss Ain?! What are you-- How are you not under the spell?!"He asled, seeming surprised and shocked.
"What is that?!"She ignored his question in favor of her own. She wasn't in the mood for a pop quiz. She was in the mood for an answer sheet that would lead to the place where her Drew was being held. His face suddenly turned stony.
"Oh... I see. I-- Ugh, why did you have to find out now? I don't have time to explain, or give you a weapon, or! Agh... Just-- Come along, Yumi. I'll explain the basics to you when we her back. For now, I'll have to skip to lesson two thanks to circumstances."He said, grabbing her wrist. Yumi didn't have time to ask, and didn't want to. She just wanted answers.
"This is a Portal of Fear. We're going to jump in."He said simply. Then, he dragged her in, ignoring the shocked scream that ripped from her mouth.
--
They landed in darkness, Yumi landed roughly on her back, but, luckily, suffering no damage. A hand was held out to her, and looking up, she saw her teacher's face, illuminated by green-blue light. She grabbed his hand and pulled herself up. She looked for the sorce of light, turning around, and then she saw it. It was a large manor, Victorian style, that looked to have quite the amount of water wear. It was emmitting the light from its windows dimly, while the rest of the area around the house was pitch black.
"Listen up Yumi. This is a quick study session, because your test is in that house." She nodded, not yet tearing her eyes from the house. "That girl that's been hanging around, the one scared of water. She's a Fear. A personaification of a phobia meant to cast fear into humans. Usually they play a fair game, only striking fear into those who are planned to have their phobia. But recently, they've been rebelling, trying to take over all humans. Specifically rebelling, here, in Japan. It's why I moved."
"But why did you move?"
"Because these rebellions have been happening since the beginning of time, and there needs to be someone to regulate them. I'm what you would call a Bravery Solider, or a Fear Fighter. We go by lots of names. And you know what, Yumi? You're one too."
"...Excuse me?"
"I know its a lot to take in, but it's obvious. You could see the portal, and you weren't affected by Aquaphobia --That girl. You're a pretty strong Fear Fighter, too."
"Uh..."
"Come on, we need to go in."And he marched inside, where Yumi followed, confused and silent.
The house was flooded on the inside. You could distantly hear screams and sobs. As they walled, water from the floor sloshed at their ankles.
--
((Spoilers ahead!)
Yumi and Tyler entered the portal, which was surrounded by crazy laughter and screams. Yumi cleared her throat nervously, flexing her wrists and making her weapon come out. Tyler set his Time Army Knife to eliminate. They were both nervous for what could be next. Into the house they went....
And yet, were greeted happily and normally. The Soul of the Parlor offered tea and shouted for 'everyone else.'
"Come on! We've got visitors!"
It was such a confusing display... Usually, the Room Souls stated separate from one another, and didn't leave their designated Room, but, here, all the Room Souls came out, and greeted them like old friends, along with all the regular Fearful Souls, gathering around them.
"What fear is this?"Yumi muttered, letting herself be dragged to the couch area and sat down with a glass of tea, which she didn't dare drink. Several Room Souls sat with her, and talked excitedly to her and each other about random things. Tyler shrugged. He sat down, and downed the tea.
"Wait! You--"
"It's regular tea, Yumi."Tyler told her. She raised a eyebrow. She still didn't drink it.
"Could you excuse us? We need to--"Tyler started to say, getting up, before he was yanked back down, with a chorus of 'No!'
Yumi's eyes widened. Suddenly, she realized. Those faces weren't just excited... They were desperate. Their grind were strained. She looked to her side. The Library Soul was near her, fidgeting nervously with a book as the others talked.
"May I borrow your book?"She asked. They looked up, and grinned, in that same strained way. They nodded rapidly.
"Just read it here with us!"
"You can do whatever you like, just stay here!" They seemed to chorus. Yumi frowned, uncomfortable. She opened the book. Then, there was panic.
"Wait! It's that book! Why do you have that out?!" They screamed.
"I didn't think she would want to read it! Give it back! Give it back!" The Library Soul moaned.
Yumi shuddered, and looked quickly, as they grabbed at the book. It was a book of illustrations. It had pictures of all the Souls, in their human forms, being left behind, left alone. But then, the book was taken from her.
"If you two won't be good houseguests, we'll have to call down out mistress. No one wants that."The Kitchen Soul said quietly.
"Then we'll go and meet her."Tyler said with a growl, and sliced through all the souls that gathered around him. They descended upward, together. The other Souls stared, before their eyes turned black.
"You made them go alone! You made them go alone!"They screamed, and they attacked Yumi, ambushing her as Tyler tried to fight through them.
"Why would you do that?!" She yelled as she fought off the rabid Souls.
"I thought they were harmless!"
"Have you ever seen a harmless Soul?!" She shouted angrily, and sliced through the remaining in one, elegant move.
