Word Vomit

Hello? Hello.

What you're seeing here is a message. If you don't read it soon, it'll disappear. Go quickly.

The world was obliterated in the good year of 2082. We thought we had thousands, maybe even millions more, but we were wrong. We knew that this message would survive amongst the remnants and rubble.

I'm sure you don't speak English, and I'm aware of that. I'm sorry about that, but this is the only way we can save some sort of memoir.

Now, for my explanation. I'm the spokesperson of the survivors of the human race. I don't know who (or what) you are, but I hope that you make good use of our planet, unlike our species.

We were two-legged, beige-colored complex beings. We created things like electricity and plastic, and did our best to be efficient in handling our race. But you see, we were terrible.

Our electricity attributed to the warming of the Earth. Our plastic attributed to the downfall of marine life. We killed our food, our planet, our atmosphere, and in effect, ourselves.

We were also terrible to each other. We discriminated against members of our race because of their genetic makeup. We had two sexes, and one always wanted to dominate the other. We had different shades of skin, and those with the lightest believed themselves superior to the rest. We cause wars over things that didn't matter, all because we felt the need to always be right. But here I am, telling you we were wrong. All of us, we all were wrong.

But, you see, there were good things among the bad. We did what we believed best to maintain our way of life. We created huge buildings that could accommodate all of us. We created huge food facilities and factories so that we could all be fed. We created something that we called "science," and used it to eradicate disease and produce better food. We did our best to, well, be our best.

And now, I raise you, to think: can you do better? Can you survive thousands of years without destroying your planet? We tried, we really did.

I hope you can find ways to treat this world better than we did. I'm sure you won't find many traces of our existence, but if you look closely in some places, you'll find rock and glass in mounds, places that used to be the world's tallest skyscrapers, stretching into the atmosphere. Or maybe you'll find nets or plastic in the oceans, from our less proud moments. Maybe you'll find another message like this in a glass bottle floating on the see. My point remains: we existed. I existed. And you reading this, it proves that you exist, too.

Take care of this planet. It suited the needs of our predecessors, those we called "dinosaur," and then us through our stages of evolution, from minuscule fish from the bottom of the food chain to the primates, to the humans who studied each other without ever solving the mystery of why we existed. It will suit yours too. Don't fail as we have.
