Prologue: Mess at the Manor

Class's narration

Ah! I see you took my invitation.

Go on. Have a seat and help yourself to some tea.

I am surprised you were interested in chatting with me for an hour or so, given the location of the family manor.

Or did you feel that you had to come out of manners?

Regardless, I felt that I should reveal what you wanted to know about me or anything that goes on in Spagonia's capital, since you will be staying here for a while.

Hm? You did not come to learn about the region or the country?

Wait...so let me get this clear. You came...to learn about me and my family line specifically?

While I admire your curiosity, are you certain you wish to walk down that path?

....

Very well, I will share what I can, but it will not be heard to the public ear. Do I make myself clear?

Good. Then I will think of where to start.

I suppose I should just mention where my family started, which should not be a surprise to you.

My family, the Woofwell family, were originally a long line of Mobian nobility in the past, ruling a small region in the kingdom run by the Royal Acorn family.

While we were probably the least known noble family in the kingdom, we were grateful for the land and people we were to govern for the next few centuries, often putting aside personal matters to assure that the people's lives remained safe and peaceful.

Things were well for us, until the Great War happened, which started a controversy with our family.

My grandfather was put on trial for espionage and giving intelligence to the human side of the war, despite the fact he had found out about and stopped a coup against the king.

The punishment was stripping my grandfather of his noble position and his knighthood title, followed by my family being banished from the kingdom.

Ever since, the Woofwell family name has been a name that many cringe, scoff and swear at.

Our family moved to the country of Spagonia, where my father and grandfather worked to build up a new fortune and construct Woofwell Manor a year later.

The family also refrained from getting into political positions ever again, despite some claiming my father was going to run for mayor of Spagonia's capital.

But even after we bounced back from being banished from our family's past life, the world...still had something against us.

Tragedy struck on a dark night...

Normal POV

Woofwell Manor (1pm)

Everyone in the home was asleep, not aware of what was going on outside the building.

Suddenly, the old man of the home, James Woofwell, was awakened by the barely audible sound of glass being cut.

James went to the master bedroom to awaken his son, careful not to awaken the child in the other room.

The old dog tries to shake his son from his sleep. "Issac, wake up."

The father of the house, Issac Woofwell, stirs from his sleep. "What is it, father? It's 1 in the morning."

James tells him. "Someone is attempting to break in through the back door of the manor. I estimate they already have made a hole big enough to step through by now."

Issac gets out of bed. "We need to keep them away from Edward's room then. Get me the keys to the blade cabinet."

James tosses the keys over and Issac runs over and unlocks a glass cabinet filled with cutlasses, rapiers and double edged swords.

Issac grabs a blade and hands another to James as they both walk out of the room and down the halls to where the sound came from.

Two burglars had cut a human sized hole through the glass door that separates the inside of the manor from the pool patio, both having two sacks ready to be filled with money, jewels and sellable items.

James whispers to Issac. "On my mark, we sneak over to the table and ambush them."

Issac nods and gets ready as the two burglars move from the back door and make their way towards the nearest room to check.

Just as they reached the door, James whispers to his son. "Now!"

The two rush towards the table that the burglars were near...but something went wrong.

Issac accidentally knocked over a vase that was on the floor, alerting the burglars to their presence.

One of the burglars pulls out a handgun and fires at Issac, the dog falling down from the shot.

James knocks the table over as cover and manages to pull Issac over to him.

Both burglars try to shoot through the table as James tries to check the wounds.

Issac gasps for air, apparently the shot having hit a lung. "Father....I.....won't....make it. Please....get....your.....grandson....to....safety..."

James was forced to watch as in a few minutes after they took cover, his son dies in his arms from the lack of being able to keep oxygen.

The old dog glares and comes out from cover. "Take this, you scoundrels!"

James cuts at one of the burglars twice, causing the person to yell in pain and get on their knees.

The other burglar shot at James three times before he could do anything else, the elder hitting the floor hard.

Police sirens were heard in the distance, Issac's wife apparently having called them when she heard her husband and father in law go out to fight them.

The two ran back out the back door and fled into the night, not many clues left behind besides a few bullets.

A young pup comes out of his room to see the mess, suddenly scared of seeing his father suddenly on the ground with his grandfather.

Edward runs over to James. "Grandpa! Are you ok?"

James couldn't respond, one of the shots being a headshot that killed him instantly.

Edward checks on his father next and is terrified when he saw the wounds on him.

Officers stormed into the house through the front door and checked to see if everyone was alright.

As they rushed to secure the crime scene at the back of the house, the commissioner gets Edward out of the place and to his mother.

The man tells him. "It's gonna be alright, lad. Just go to sleep with your mum."

Even though his mother and the commissioner were trying their best to comfort the kid, Edward still had streams coming down his face after seeing his father dead.

Class's narration

My mother was never the same after those events, her heart shattered by the death of her husband.

There was no comfort for us after the murders, and no one bothered asking about us.

Even worse, the criminals responsible got away scot free, no punishment given.

The biggest slap in the face was when one of them got caught for another crime, but was set free after not having found enough evidence against them.

Not only was the family tarnished for no reason, but when we needed justice the most, it abandoned us.

Ever since that night, I wanted to get those responsible behind bars, even if I had to catch them doing another crime.

My goal, at first, was to get into the police force so I could arrest them one day.

But one day at school was enough to change my position to elsewhere...

Normal POV

Winston Academy (Recess)

Edward was sitting at a fountain while taking notes from a book he was reading, trying to get things ready for a test.

Suddenly, a mud ball hits his uniform, staining it and some of it getting on his notes.

Edward glares at the group of boys who laughed at his misfortune and tries to ignore them.

One of them goes over to him. "Hey runt, are you planning something?"

Edward jokes to him. "I am planning my life out...unlike you."

The bully glares at him and grabs him by the collar. "You want to say that again, mate?"

Edward tells him. "I am not taking my words back, you hairless ape."

He punches him across face and kicks him in the gut when he was on the ground.

Edward winced in pain as he tries to get up from the swift beating he just took.

The bully smirks at him. "You don't belong here...or anywhere for that matter. Your family is a bunch of backstabbing liars. Your dad and granddad had what was coming to them."

Edward glares at him as he walks away, the bully's insult to his family hitting a nerve.

He runs at him and pounces on him, wailing punch after punch on his face with a few tears.

Edward yells at him. "Don't talk about my father that way!"

The bully's buddies grabbed Edward and pulled him away as the guy got up and wiped the dirt from his face.

As the two guys held him, the bully punches Edward in the gut hard for 5 times.

The two friends of his then dragged him to the fountain and put his head in the water, nearly drowning forcibly.

They pulled him back up and punched him some more before drowning him again, repeating it again for another minute.

It wasn't until three minutes later that a teacher came in and tried to save Edward.

The man yells at them as he gets them away from him and tries to help Edward breathe. "Enough of this! You three are going to the headmaster's office to be punished for this behavior! Understand?"

The three boys left, but not before giving Edward nasty looks as they walked.

The teacher asks. "Are you alright, Edward? What did they do this time?"

Edward shows the ruined notes and books to him, too shaken up from the beating to give answers.

The teacher helps him to the nurse to get treated for anything.

Class's narration

Ever since that day at the academy, I grew to avoid fights, especially ones up close.

The fight not only angered me, but also traumatized me a little, so it made sense for me to dodge outcomes like those.

Being in the police force would mean more of brutal moments like that times two, and my mother would have a heart attack if she knew I went into fights like those.

I decided that I should go for a more calm approach, but one that would still get me the opportunity to capture hoodlums like the ones that harmed my family.

From what I remember of past cases, the person who was able to search for the identities of the burglars was a detective.

My new goal...was to become a private eye detective, independent from the police force's gaze.

I also aimed to get a certification to be an attorney for court cases in case a client could not get one.

Determination and a clear mind is what drove me to make information of entire populations my goal.

Eventually, I graduated with high grades and got several invitations to universities around the world.

But I could not rest yet until my learning at Spagonia University was complete...

......

Oh! I just realized it is getting late.

If you wish to learn more, I will remind my staff to keep an eye on the door for your arrival.

But do be careful during your stay in Spagonia's biggest city, you never know who might surprise you there.

Have a good night, my friend!
