Chapter 3-Finding Clues
- Evelyn's PoV-
~Locker Area~
As of now, we went to the locker area one last time to meet up with our groups. We talked about which group would go to each room and search in the rooms they were assigned to. Since there were only a few room keys, we definetly had to split them up evenly between all the groups so it would be fair. But since some rooms didn't have a key, splitting up the room keys was harder than I thought.
"You know what, lets just distribute these after we decide the leaders for the groups." Alexander sighs.
"Lets do that so we won't waste anymore time." Lisa says.
"Evelyn since you made the groupings, you decide the leaders. But we'll be the one to decide the leader of your group, that fine?" Rodrick asks.
"Sure. Besides its fair anyways since I might make myself leader, which I don't want to be a leader." I say.
"Actually, we want you as the leader for your group." Veronica says with a smile.
"Huh, why me? I don't even have any leadership skill whats so ever." I say, confused at why they chose me as the leader even though they could have chosen Rodrick instead.
"You might not have any special skills, but you think and make logical decisions really fast." Veronica says, a determined tone in her voice.
"Hmm, if you say so..." I mumble, writing 'Leader' beside my name on the piece of paper containing the groupings.
"Anyways, hurry up and choose the leaders, Evelyn." John interrupts, yawning and not even bothering to cover his mouth while doing so.
I roll my eyes before looking at the groupings on the piece of paper. I scan the paper before choosing the Leaders of each group, making sure to write 'Leader' beside their name. I pause for awhile, wondering if the Leaders I assign are 'worthy enough', even though that sounds incredibly cringy.
"Okay, i'm done assigning the Leaders." I say, folding the paper and giving it to Alexander, since he's the leader and all here. Well, at some point.
"I wonder who's the Leaders for the groups..." Devan mumbles, glancing at the paper that Alexander is holding.
"You guys better not complain on why I chose that person as the Leader okay?" I warn, glaring at most of the boys since their known for complaining. Well, no offence to some of them though, but hey, that's the truth.
"Fine, we won't complain..." Tim says, rolling his eyes and sighing. I glare at him, making him silently shriek and look the other way. All of us laugh before Alexander coughs to get our attention.
"Okay, so the Leaders are the following..." Alexander states, reading out the names written on the paper.
Groupings
Group 1
Evelyn - Leader
Lisa
Sophia
Rodrick
Group 2
Alexander - Leader
Katherine
John
Group 3
Veronica - Leader
Devan
Michael
Group 4
Ethan - Leader
Abigail
Tim
"Well then, i'm suprised i'm a Leader but i'm not complaining, so don't glare at me!" Ethan exclaims, quickly looking at me to check if i'm giving him a death stare or not.
"The Leaders were expected I guess. Judging from the following people chosen, they actually are responsible people." Katherine says, crossing her arms to give her a more comfortable position.
"Haha, I knew you'd say that. I chose the people I trusted and was most comfortable with to be the Leaders." I say with a laugh.
"Well, the Leaders and groupings aside, we should start giving the groups the keys." Michael says, finally speaking up after being quiet for awhile.
"I think we should just give the keys randomly." Sophia says with a quiet yet clear voice.
"I'll give the keys to the Leaders randomly." Devan says.
"Be sure to give the keys evenly, Devan." Rodrick says, making Devan nod before giving out the keys to the group leaders randomly.
"Since we have the keys and leaders done, I guess we should go and explore now." Abigail says.
"I guess so. Any last announcement before we all go split up?" Tim asks.
"Well, when everyone is done finding a Music Sheet, come back here so we can all meet up. If we have 4 Music Sheets in total, we can all go to the Music Room. Is that clear?" Rodrick states, a serious tone in his voice. We all nod in agreement to Rodrick's statement.
I wave bye to the others before walking to the stairs which lead to the other floors. Since there were 3 floors in this building, 2 groups would search the 1st floor while the other 2 will search the 2nd and 3rd floor. The group that is gonna explore the 3rd floor is Veronica's group, from what I remembered. I walk up the stairs, wondering whats waiting for us in the 2nd floor. Is there a dead body in the 2nd floor? Or is there a ghost thats gonna chase us? Or there could possibly be a room that we might get locked in? These questions I didn't know the answer to, but hopefully none of these will be found in the 2nd floor or else I might be screaming for the entire time, or maybe not.
"Okay, so where to first?" Lisa asks, looking around to see if no one is there other than us.
"Well firstly, what rooms are found in this floor?" I ask.
"Our classroom is in this floor along with the Music Room, Library, and a bunch of other classrooms." Rodrick says.
"There's also some club rooms here like the Art Club and the Dance Club." Sophia says.
"Hmm, should we check the club rooms first or the classrooms?" I ask.
"I guess classrooms first." The three of them say in unison, making them look at each other before laughing at how synchronized they sound.
I giggle a bit before turning around and walking the opposite direction, the others following right behind me. I hold the keys tightly in my hand, the sound of metal hitting softly whenever I walk. I walk towards one of the classroom doors before turning the door knob, only to find out that its locked.
"Why did I even think that its not locked..." I sigh, checking the keys and unlocking the door with the classroom key.
I slowly open the door and peek inside the room. It was really dark inside so I opened the door a bit more so the light from my flashlight would go in. I fully open the door and step inside the room, flashing the light of my flashlight everwhere to make sure nothing is inside.
"So, time to search?" I ask, gesturing the others to go inside the room.
"I guess so. If anyone finds anything related or useful to finding a Music Sheet then just say so." Rodrick says before walking over to the shelf in the corner of the room.
We all nod before splitting up to search the room. I walk towards the teachers table and look at it. I open one of the drawers and see a bunch of documents inside. I grab the documents, arranging them before looking at them. There were several documents regarding class activities and schedules, but one of them stood out becuase of how crumpled and ripped it looked in comparison to the other documents, which looked pretty new. I place the other documents on the table before looking at the one that caught my eye. It looked crumpled, as if it was supposed to be thrown away but then was kept instead. The sides were a bit torn and the paper had a lot of ink smudges on it. I look at it, trying to see if the contents are still clear enough to be read.
"This is a class list I think..." I mutter. It mentioned some names of students I knew graduated a long time ago. So this could possibly be a class list of the students during the time of the accident. I fold the paper in half, putting it in my pocket afterwards so I won't lose it. I place the other documents back into the drawer before closing it with a soft thud. I walk towards Sophia who was checking some of the desks.
"Found anything yet, Sophia?" I ask tapping her shoulder softly, making her silently yelp in fear.
"Oh sorry! I didn't see you there. And no, I haven't found anything yet sadly." Sophia says with a small smile.
"Do you need help? I'm done searching in my area so I can help you find something. Also sorry for suprising you." I say.
"Its fine, and sure. I actually need help since there's alot of desks to search through..." Sophia sighs.
I nod, walking over to a desk opposite from Sophia's. I check under it to see if anything was stuck under the table. As expected nothing was under it. I sigh before searching the other tables and checking under them, hopefully finding something.
"Evelyn, I found something, I think..." Sophia says, walking towards me with a small hint of worry in her eyes.
"Oh, what did you find?" I ask, wondering why she looked a bit worried when walking towards me.
"Well, just see for yourself..." Sophia says, turning around to walk back to the desk she was searching at. I give a confused look before following her to the desk she was walking towards. She points under the desk, making me kneel to get a better view of what she's pointing at.
"I think there's something small there..." I say, standing up and dusting off the dust from my clothes.
"Well, I think we should get it..." Sophia says with a hesitant smile.
I nod before kneeling down once again to see what's under the table. I stretch out my hand to grab what ever is under the desk, stretching more to reach the object. After feeling something in my hand, I quickly pull back my hand to see the object clearly. I look at my hand to see what I found. In my hand was a wooden version of a music note. It was dark brown and seemed as if it was meant to be placed into something. It also had this weird red liquid or substance on it which also was on my hand. And that's when I realized that it was blood on my hand.
"Oh god why is there blood under the desk..." I groan, quickly placing the music note on the desk before looking at Sophia who stared at my hand with wide eyes.
"U-umm do you n-need something to wipe your h-hand with?... Sophia asks, stuttering a bit with some of her words. I nod several times before Sophia quickly gets a tissue from her sling bag. She gives it to me and I smile before quickly wiping my right hand with the tissue. I wipe the wooden music note since it also had some blood on it, and I did not want blood on my hand again.
"Lets go to the others." I say, folding the tissue and placing it on the desk.
"Umm, can I hold that?" Sophia asks, looking at the wooden music note on the desk.
"Sure, you found it first anyways, so you should hold it." I say, handing over the wooden music note to Sophia.
We walk towards Lisa and Rodrick, who seem to be talking about something. Lisa was holding a sheet of paper, one that looked like the one I found. The only difference was that it had ink smudges all over it, in comparison to mine which only had a few.
"Oh Evelyn, Sophia, did you guys find anything?" Rodrick asks, noticing me and Sophia looking at him and Lisa.
"Yeah, we found a few things, how about you guys?" I ask.
"We also found some stuff. I found a box near the shelves that looked interesting." Rodrick says, walking over to the shelves in the corner of the room. He gets something from the shelves before walking back towards us and placing a box on the desk. The box looked old and looked like an antique because of the designs on the sides of it. It had a hole on top of it, along with a passcode on the side of the box.
"Its also locked by the way, if both of you wanted to try and open it. Just saying." Rodrick says, noticing me grab the box and trying to unlock it.
"So, this passcode thing must serve as a lock, I presume." I say, placing down the box on the desk.
"Yup, and since its locked, the music sheet must be inside it." Lisa says.
"Firstly, can everyone show what they found so we can see if it can help in opening this?" I ask.
Everyone nods before checking their pockets or, well, wherever they placed what ever they found. Lisa unfolded a piece of paper that looked like mine, instead it had a bunch of numbers written on it. Sophia softly placed the wooden music note on the desk. I place a piece of paper on the desk, which was the class list of this class from the looks of it.
"What is that Evelyn?" Sophia asks, curiously looking at the piece of paper I placed down.
"It seems like its the class list of this class. It also looks old so maybe it was during the time of the accident." I say, Sophia nodding to my response.
"Also Lisa, that piece of paper, whats it about?" I ask, looking at the numbers scribbled all over the paper.
"I honestly don't know. All I know is that there's a bunch of numbers on it and that's basically it." Lisa sighs.
"A bunch of numbers, a box, the class list and a wooden version of a music note..." Rodrick mutters, thinking of how those could help them.
"Umm, maybe the other items can help open the box?.." Sophia says, unsure of what she said.
"Perhaps. Lets check the box first, maybe it has something that can tell us what to do first." I say.
We nod before all of us stare at the box. I grab the box and turn it over. I flip over the box again and see a tiny hole on top of it. It looks like something is supposed to be placed inside it. I ponder for awhile on what could possibly fit inside the slot. I glance at the wooden music note before looking back at the box.I softly place down the box before I get the wooden music note piece. I look at it for awhile before looking at the box. I align the music note piece with the hole on the box. I pause before placing the music note in the hole, the piece fitting into the hole.
"Well then, it fits..." I say, lifting my fingers off the box.
"H-how did y-you know that it w-would fit Evelyn?" Sophia asks, stuttering at some of her words.
"I actually didn't know that it would fit to be honest. But I had a feeling it would be used for that." I say, staring at the box.
"Well, is it unlocked now?" Lisa asks, fixing up the papers and placing them down on the desk again.
Rodrick takes the box and tries opening it. He sighs, dissapointed that it wasn't unlocked already. "Well, from me trying to open it, its definetly still locked." Rodrick says.
"Maybe if we unlock the passcode it will be open then?" Sophia says.
"Hmm, maybe. Lets check those sheets of paper if they can help." I say, grabbing the sheet of paper which contained the class list and reading it. Lisa nods and takes the paper filled with numbers on it.
Sophia was helping me find out how the class list could open the box, while Rodrick was helping Lisa figure out what the list of numbers could mean. I scan the paper up and down, trying to find anything that can help us, just anything. Thats when I noticed there was something written before all the names of the students on the list. There were numbers beside each of the students names. They weren't arranged from 1-10 though, they were arranged randomly, which means they aren't in order.
"Hmm so there are numbers beside their names..." I mutter.
Sophia looks at me before looking at Lisa. "Lisa, are the numbers on your paper arranged by a certain order?" Sophia asks.
"Oh, no, but there's some numbers here that are clear unlike the other numbers that were just scribbled on the paper." Lisa says, glancing up to look at Sophia before looking back at the paper.
"What numbers are clear?" Sophia asks, glancing at the box every now and then.
"Well, just check this so you can both see...." Lisa says, handing over the paper to Sophia.
"The only set of numbers here that aren't scribbled are 1659453." I say, looking at the bottom right corner of the paper, which was the only space that wasn't scribbled on.
"What do these numbers mean though..." Sophia murmurs.
"Maybe its the passcode to the box?" Lisa suggests with an unsure tone.
"That's impossible, the passcode on the box isn't numbers, but instead, letters." Rodrick says, holding the box in his hands.
"Hmm, so if these numbers can't help, then how about the class list?" Sophia asks.
"Well, lets let Lisa and Rodrick check it this time since they haven't read it yet." I say, Sophia nodding and giving Rodrick the class list.
Rodrick grabs the class list and shows it to Lisa. Rodrick furrows his eyebrows while Lisa was pouting a bit, probably cause they couldn't figure out how in the world could it help us open this old box. It was making us frustrated, just standing here trying to figure out how to open a box that could possibly help us escape. If we didn't open this box then we would be stuck here for who knows how long, and trust me I would rather do chores for a whole year non-stop instead of staying here, just searching for clues to escape.
"Hmm, what do the numbers before the names even mean..." Rodrick mutters, furrowing his eyebrows and sighing every now and then, probably cause he can't figure out what any of this means.
"Do you guys have any clue of what it means?" Lisa asks, looking up to look at both me and Sophia. Me and Sophia shake our heads and frown.
Lisa sighs, probably because she hoped we knew something, anything that can help. "Its fine, its understandable anyways since me and Rodrick don't know anything either." Lisa says with a reassuring smile.
"Thanks, we'll try to find anything else in the room that can help." I say, walking over to the other desks to search for anything that can help, Sophia following behind me.
I look at Sophia, turning around to point towards the shelves. She tilts her head a bit, a confused expression on her face before nodding and walking over to the shelves. I turn around to walk back to the desks and I proceed to search under all of them, praying or well, having a small amount of hope that we can find something that can actually help us. I check every corner or space under all the desks, finding nothing that could be of use. I sigh, checking one last desk before going to help Sophia search the shelves. I place my hand under the desk, feeling a soft yet rough surface under my hand.
I clench my hand, feeling something crumple in it. I tilt my head to get a better view of what I crumpled in hand, tilting my head even further to see what's under the table. When I could finally see what was under the table, I could see that the object that I crumpled in my hand, was a piece of paper which was taped to the table. I let go of the crumpled paper, making it hang as only one part of the tape is still stuck on the table. I peel of the tape, making the paper fall flat on the ground's rough surface. I pick the paper up and flip it over to see the writings written on it.
"Hmm, lets see what written here...." I say, glancing the paper from top to bottom.
-Contents of the Paper-
To Bianca,
Heya Bianca! I just wanted to write this down real quick cause I had to leave in a hurry cause one of the teachers needed help carrying something, so I wanted you to do what T. Mary Bell told me to do. Anyways, she told me that I had to get something inside the box near the shelves. After that you have to get what ever is inside and give it to her. Oh also, i'm guessing you don't know the passcode to the box right? Well i'll just say how to get the passcode cause if I write it in this note, some people might just find this and open the box whenever they want to without T.Mary Bell's permission. Anyways, to open the box you have to check the class list on the teacher's desk and the number list I taped to my table.
After getting those two sheets of paper, get the box from the shelves. Look at the class list, each students name has a number on them right? Well take note of those numbers cause you'll use them for the code. Okay, now look at the paper you removed from my table, its just crossed out numbers right? Well among those numbers, theres a set of numbers that aren't crossed off or scribbled on. Now, once you find those set of numbers, remember them and look at the class list. Now I don't want to say legit how you can unlock the code so i'll say it in a riddle, and I know your good with riddles so I know you'll understand this.
*The code of honors, the code of the elite, the code of the first. With numbers of their highest degree, they are chosen for specific places. 7 students, 7 numbers specified to them. The letter that symbolizes them, carved into history of those who had the highest among the normal, highest among the poor and rich, and finally, the highest among all.'
Okay so that's the riddle! Hopefully you understand what it means and all. And remember, give the item to me or T. Mary Bell once you have it. Once again thanks Bianca!
From your best friend,
Liam
I fold the paper, placing it in my pocket afterwards. It seems that whoever wrote the letter, it was the person who knew the code to the box. It also seems that this 'Liam' person was telling 'Bianca' how to crack the code for the box. And a riddle that can possibly tell us how to open the box? Well then I better let the others know about this.
'Should I approach Sophia or should I tell Rodrick and Lisa instead....' I thought.
If I approach Sophia, I could ask her if she found anything else that could also open the box other than the note I just found. If I approach Lisa and Rodrick, I can ask them what the riddle in the note could possibly mean and we could open the box, or not. Either way this note is probably the last and only way to open the box. Now that I think about it, we're just trying to find the first object among many more objects we have to search. That means we have to keep searching and searching until who knows how long. By the time we get out of here it could already be 2 weeks later, or a month or even a year, even though that's sounds really impossible but still, that could be a choice here.
'I'll just approach Sophia and see if she found anything...' I mutter to myself, walking towards Sophia who is just checking the shelves from top to bottom.
"Hey Sophia, did you find anything?" I ask, tapping her shoulder softly, making her turn around to look at me.
"Nope, no luck so far..." Sophia sighs, a disappointed tone in her voice. Which was pretty rare to hear since she's has either a shy or energetic tone, well, most of the time.
"Well, that's fine. I found something and I think it can help us open the box." I say.
"Really? We better tell Lisa and Rodrick so we can finally open the box!" Sophia says with a happy smile.
"Yeah I was thinking about telling them this as quickly as possible." I say, turning around and approaching Lisa and Rodrick.
"Guys I found a way to open this box." I say, slamming down my hands on the desk, note and documents at hand.
"Really? How?" Lisa asks, a small glimmer of hope can be seen in her eyes.
"This riddle, it says how to open this box. We need to solve it to know how to open it though, that's why all of us need to help on this." I say, unfolding the note and showing the others the riddle.
"Hmm, let's break down the riddle to several parts to make this a bit easier. Then lets compare each part to a thing we found or saw, got it?" Rodrick explains, all of us nodding along to his statement.
"The code of honors, the code of the elite. I'm guessing that's the passcode or something." Lisa states.
"7 students, 7 numbers. I think that's a hint on what the passcode is." Sophia says.
"But what does the last few parts mean?" I ask. All of us fall silent, not knowing what it meant. If we don't know what it means, then we can't open this box. "I...think its what the passcode is made up of..." Rodrick says, finally breaking the silence among us.
"What the passcode is made up of?" Lisa asks, curious to what Rodrick meant.
"Yes, it makes sense since the only thing that we can put on the box is letters not numbers." Rodrick says, Lisa realizing what Rodrick meant.
"Then maybe, just maybe..." I mumble, staring at the clues we found.
"What is it Evelyn?" Lisa asks, turning to look at me.
"I think I figured it out. I think I know how to open this box." I state, grabbing the sheets of paper and the box. I place them infront of me before looking back at everyone else.
"W-what? R-really?" Sophia asks, a look of suprise on her face.
"I don't know, but trust me, I think I know what to do. And hopefully, it will open the box." I say.
I remember the set of numbers from the note and look at the class list. The numbers, they have to be related to the names of each student in the class list. The passcode isn't numbers from what Rodrick stated, so it must be letters that are from the class list. If I remember correctly, there are only 10 students listed on the class list. The numbers on the note have 7 numbers written, which means 7 of the student's names are part of the code. But we can't put the full name of the student, it won't fit since only 7 letters can be placed.
'That riddle...' I pause to think. 'Its the most important piece of this puzzle...' I say to myself.
I look at the small note that I found earlier. I look at the riddle to try and figure something out. 'The code of honors, the code of the elite, the code of the first. With numbers of their highest degree, they are chosen for specific places. 7 students, 7 numbers specified to them. The letter that symbolizes them, carved into history of those who had the highest among the normal, highest among the poor and rich, and finally, the highest among all....What could that mean...' I ask myself. I look at the class list once again, scanning the names shown on the sheet. There were only 10 students listed down which is a small amount, but the other names got crossed of so I didn't mind it.
~Class 2-A~
Girls:
1. Megan White
9. Bella Roselmwitz
4. Patricia Arabell
2. Carrol Grace
7. Helen Regardo
Boys:
3. James Richman
8. Gerald Cordon
5. Liam Diazo
6. Paulo Aramos
0. Marcus Thynx
I look at the numbers before the names of the students. I then proceed to look at the sheet of scribbled numbers. The numbers that weren't scribbled were '1956453' and the numbers beside the student's names are from 0-9, but arranged randomly. If I remember correctly, the riddle talked about how 7 students, have 7 letters that are assigned to them. And that this code, is the code of honors or something. The numbers beside each student's name is randomized though, which means it has something to do with their names. If I were to get names from the list using the code of numbers, they would be Megan, Bella, Liam, Paulo, Patricia and James. One of the digits are repeated, so one of the names could be repeated as well. If I look at the following names, I could use the first letter of their names. If I do that, then I would get a set of letter which say 'MBLPPLJ'. I look at the box and tilt it up. I look at the passcode which had scrambled letters on it, probably to confuse the person trying to put the code. I input the set of letters I thought of, hoping it would open the box. When I hear a sound of a click, I feel like a huge weight has been removed from my shoulders.
"Oh my god, it opened." Lisa states, her mouth opening and closing in shock.
"H-how E-evelyn? How?" Sophia asks, looking at the box which I placed down onto the table.
"I'll quickly explain from what I understood on how to open this box." I say, the others nodding before focusing on me.
"As you guys remember, there was a riddle right? You see this riddle is like a secret option to open the box. If you read the note I found, it talks about a person who's telling his friend to get something inside the box for him, since he's busy or etc. Now there are several clues that will help open the box and some are stated in the note." I pause and show everyone the clues we found. "The clues are the class list and the note of scribbled numbers. If you read the riddle, it talks about how 7 students are very smart or well known. Because of that they were remembered using letters, initials or something in those lines." I explain, the others nodding slowly, trying to absorb the information being given to them.
"On the box, you can only input 7 letters, which means the code is relating to the riddle. If you look at the note of numbers, there's one portion that isn't scribbled and it contains the numbers '1659453' which are 7 numbers. The class list contains 10 students, 6 of them having them having the following numbers before their names." I say.
"So, your saying their name was the code?" Rodrick asks.
"Well yes, but only the first letter of their names is the code." I say, Rodrick tilting his head in confusion. "The riddle says 'the code of the first', so I think it meant the first letter of their names." I explain.
"I see, Evelyn your really good at puzzles." Sophia smiles, I smile in return to her simple compliment.
"Well, now that we opened this box, we got this Music Sheet right?" Lisa asks, opening the box to find a scrolled up piece of paper.
"I guess so. What should we do now though?" I ask, grabbing the scrolled piece of paper in the box.
"We could go check the other groups I guess." Rodrick says.
"I wanna see if Veronica's group is okay too..." Sophia says, looking down with worried eyes.
"They are in the 3rd floor and its really dark there..." Lisa says.
"We should go then. Hopefully their al-" Before I could finish speaking, a loud noise echoed through out the area.
The noise sounding like a scream, coming from the 3rd floor, where Veronica's group is...

SWEET HALLELUJAH IM FINALLY FINISHED WITH THIS CHAPTER! Im so sorry for taking so long in this update, but as I stated before Class 46 has one of the most longestchapters i've ever written. When I checked in my memo or note app, the chapter already reached 5400+ words and I was almost done. I tried to make it look short so yeh. Anyways, oh dear a scream was heard from the 3rd floor where Veronica's groups is. Well i'm worried for them now...
Also that picture on the scribbled sheet of numbers was made by me and its from my other phone so that why its not HD well for me but hopefully it is.
Anyways, I'm gonna start working on Both of Us next so if I take a while with it expect a Teaser!
Don't forget to vote, comment or even follow if you like the chapter! Don't be shy to comment whether it's criticism or just a comment passing by, don't be afraid to write it down in the comments! ^^. Also, don't forget to add this book to your library so you won't miss any updates! ^^
