Pawns Built For Blame...
~Earlier~
Haru: Hawks...?
Hawks turned his head to see some of the students of Class 1-C.
Hawks: Oh hey chickadees. What can I do for you?
Jack: Well...if it's not too much to ask. What does a hero mean to you?
Hawks:.....A hero, huh?
Hawks considered the question seriously. With everything that had happened with the Liberation Front and then the League and all the ensuing fallout, that question was at the forefront of everyone's minds.
Hawks: Well Hatchlings. I can answer you this. I'm sure you all heard someone being hero means just saving someone, right?
Multiple nods was all the answer he needed though he noticed some of them looked like that had more detailed answers.
Hawks: Of course the simple answer is that a hero is someone who takes action in times of crisis to either help or save lives.
Hein: But isn't that was the most basic definition of the term. However, this new generations of Hero Society had slowly warped it...
Riku: So what about the harder answer?
Hawks: The harder answer? A hero is a employed servant of the government. Many are independent and make money off of their own brands or agencies, but we still pay yearly taxes and have to be certified and vetted by the HPSC to keep our licenses. We're no different from firefighters or police officers. The only exception is, of course, our over powered quirks...
Chassy: That...does make sense...
Hawks: Precisly. Pro heroes are individuals who have decided to give up their safety, freedom, and privacy in order to defend the society they grew up in. And in the end, each one is just that, an individual. And they all make choices, for good or for bad.
The youth all looked each other. Hawks knew by now that they all had been through some traumatic experience.
It was either thanks to League Of Villains or the HPSC. The mention of the latter made Hawks feel guilty. Sure he wasn't involved with what his bosses had done to the Original Class 1-C. But he was still apart of the organization that took their lives. Like how he took Twice's.
He was their pawn.
Their golden boy. Their ticket to success.
But now...Hawks was going to make things right.
Hawks: Hey...Hatchlings.
The collection of heads looked back at him.
Hawks: We're all going to make choices that will impact our lives as heroes. I'm sure some of you already made some mistakes. But the best you can do is own up and correct them. Like I'm doing right now...
Mikoto: You must have a lot on your mind...
Hawks: Ha...that I do. I screwed up, kids.
Destiny: What do you mean?
What do you think he means? He means all of this. Covering up the sins of the HPSC. The League Of Villains. Killing Twice. Causing the PLF & Final War.
Hawks felt like all of it was all his fault. All because he was the pawn that commission laid out on the chest board who has no choice but to follows orders like the dog he is.
Hawks: I think you know by now what I meant...
Kenji:....It's not your fault.
Hawks' remaining feathers bristled at that. Not his fault?
Sylvia: Yeah! It's not your fault. I mean...We all know by now, that like our senpais. You...were a victim in all of this.
Hawks: Well...I...
For once, Hawks couldn't find an answer to that.
Yin: Sure, you deny your victimhood. We can't change your mind on that. But at least you do understand that what the commission had done was wrong.
Sylvia: So maybe victim is not the right word, then? Survivor?
Not victim...Survivor? Yeah that is one way to see Hawks.
Haru: Well...don't worry too much, right? Keep on doing what you think is right. A-After all. You said it yourself. You're optimistic to a fault, yeah?
Hawks chuckled at Haru trying to lighten the mood by saying the bird hero's own words.
Hawks: Ya got that right, evas. All of you sure did read me like a book.
Maria: Of course! You're our favorite bird!
Hawks: I am not a bird!
Jack: Yes you are!
Mirko: Yeah, he's an idiot!
Hawks stared at his rabbit friend, who just appeared out of nowhere.
Hawks:....Where did you come from?!
Mirko: Been here the whole time, stupid. Since you been teaching these kids what it means to be a hero!
Hawks: But still I ain't no bird! It's just the wings.
Souta: Oh stop denying it, stupid bird. Go back in your nest.
Hawks: RUDE!
Hawks flew up onto the nest Maria made for him.
Mirko: Look at this kids. It's a wild idiot in his natural habitat.
Hawks tried to ignored the smirking faces of the students.
Souta: *Teasing* Not a bird, huh?
Hawks: *Blushes* Shut up! All of you! Teasing me like this!
Class 1-C: Hahahahaha!
Hawks just looks at the students who laughed while some chatted with Mirko whom were teaching the female students how to be strong heroines. They all had bright smiles and happy expressions. He wanted to protect those smiles and gestures.
Hawks: (I will protect my hatchlings...I will keep them safe.)
~End Flashback~
Staring at Haru's body...
Hawks' bewilderment turned to anger before it grew into rage and fury. Geysis, recovering from his own shock, looks at him in fright.
Geysis: Hawks...?
The Number Two Pro-Hero ignored him as he glared back at smirking AFO as his pupils grew back into slits. His teeth bared as a feral look formed on his face.
Hawks: I'LL KILL YOU, BASTARD!!!
He let's out an ungrateful screech before charging at AFO!
Geysis: HAWKS! NO! CALM DOWN!!!
Hawks: CALM DOWN?! DON'T FUCKING TELL ME TO CALM DOWN!!!
Geysis: HAWKS! I KNOW YOU'RE UPSET ABOUT MITSUO! BUT IF YOU RUN IN BLINDLY WITHOUT A PLAN OR STRATEGY! YOU'RE GOING TO GET KILLED BY AFO!
Hawks: NOT UNLESS I KILL HIM FIRST!!!
Geysis: Don't be stupid! Remember your orders!
Hawks:...Orders?
The feral look in Hawks' expression grew wilder.
He remembered all the horrible things he had done. The blood he had spilled. The lives he took just to please the commission.
He thought he was keeping the right people safe.
But no...he was fighting for the wrong people.
The very people who took advantage and used him since the day he was sold by his mother at the age of six.
The very people who locked up Takami Keigo years ago and forged Hawks in his place.
Hawks: Fuck this. I'm done.
Geysis: W...What do you mean-?!
Hawks glared back at him.
Hawks: I QUIT.
Geysis: Hawks...you can't be serious.
Hawks: I am deadly serious. I am done being the commission's pawn!
Geysis: But Hawks...Your mission-?!
Hawks: FUCK THE MISSION! FUCK THE HPSC! FUCK EVERYTHING!
He grabbed the older man by his commission logo on his shirt.
Hawks: LOOK AROUND YOU! PEOPLE ARE DYING! THE KIDS ARE DYING! VILLAINS ARE KILLING PEOPLE! WE'RE KILLING PEOPLE! IT'S AN FULL ON ASSAULT! A WAR AND YOU'RE WORRIED ABOUT RESTORING THE COMMISSION'S IMAGE?!!
Geysis:.....You don't understand, Hawks.
Hawks: No. You're the one who DON'T understand! Fine, I'll face him on my own! Even if I lose everything! Especially my quirk! If it means protecting the youth! The new generation of heroes and every innocent bystander out there! I would gladly sacrifice everything just to keep these kids safe! I won't let anymore of them DIE!!!
Tokoyami: Sensei...
Jiro: Whoa...Hardcore...
Destiny: *Teary-Eyed* Hawks-san...
Mio: *Crying* *Sniffles*....
AFO: What an noble endeavor, hero. I guess in end, Hawks. You're not all that bad...
AFO sends a vestiges of quirks at him but Destiny and Mio destroyed them with their own.
Destiny: Woohoo! Burn baby!
Mio: Yeah! We got you Hawks!
Hawks: Chicklets.
Geysis: Hawks....you can't do this-?!
Hawks: I'm not going to let the commission do as they please anymore! If I continue letting them...then the vicious cycle will repeat! I'M GONNA BE MY OWN HERO! WITH OR WITHOUT THEM!!! AFTER THIS WAR IS OVER, I'M TEARING DOWN TO THE GROUND WITH EITHER MY FEATHERS OR MY BARE HANDS!!!!
Geysis: Hawks...
Hawks charged at AFO!
Hawks: Tsukuyomi! Dark shadow! Cover me!
Tokoyami: Yes Hawks-Sensei!
Destiny: We'll help you Hawks!
Mio: Let's do it for Haru!!!
Jiro: Right! For Mitsuo-kun!
Geysis watched in shock as the others begin to fight AFO themselves despite knowing they won't stand no chance against someone who steals quirks and been alive for centuries.
Geysis: I envied Hawks for his bravery... All this time...My logic and loyalty for the commission had definitely brought me here...
He looked over at Haru's body.
Geysis: I am so sorry, Mitsuo. I've failed...but tell me what can I do now...when I'm still acting like a coward...Like Hawks, I am still a pawn...
~Flashback~
Two years ago...
Geysis: I'm sorry....What?!
Madam: You heard me Geysis. Those kids know too much.
Turns out, Madam President wanted the original Class 1-C dead.
Geysis: Madam President, if I'm understanding you correctly, you want me to kill all these children?
She pinches her nose in frustration when he dares to speak on the topic again.
Madam: If this is so difficult for you to understand, maybe you're due a session or two...or maybe we can have Hawks do it-?;
Geysis: No.. No, that won't be necessary. We all know Hawks won't do this.
He cuts her off before she can put the awful suggestion out there.
Geysis: Please think rationally, Madam President. I don't see why we can't we just use a quirk that erase their minds? Brainwash them and wipe away their memories?! Prevent them from seeing whatever it is that wasn't supposed to be published. Anything but killing them!
Madam President stares him down. Geysis doesn't falter to her glare.
Geysis: A few of these children's quirks have potential. It would be a waste to kill them...
He hope this could get to her cold exterior.
Madam: Fine then. Spare them, and bring them back here. The rest of them, though? You'll kill them.when I say so.
Geysis: WHAT?! Madam! Please be reasonable! U.A is going to find out about this! You of all people would understand how Nezu has eyes everywhere and-?!
Madam: We'll make sure he doesn't find out. We'll just cover up all students' whereabouts as disappearances. If they resist us, we will KILL them.
Geysis' ears are ringing. He can barely make out the President's cruel words.
What about the other teachers? They will find out about this sooner or later!
What about their families?!
They will raise questions and concerns!
They can't just get rid am whole class of twenty hero students!!!
She can't be serious. This has to be a joke.
No. He knew better. All of this was no joke.
She was SERIOUS.
That's the opportunity she's giving them. Like she had given Hawks. Like she had given Lady Nagant.
Like she had given him...
Be a child solider working for the commission....
It's either that or be killed and he hardly knows which is worse...
A hand touches his shoulder and he looks down at Madam President's face to meet her cold, cold eyes staring back at him.
Madam: Do as you are told, Geysis. Unless you want you and your siblings to end up like your father...Now you wouldn't want that, now would you?
No.....
Not Fross, Night, nor Koru either...he needed to protect them!
What if she goes after them?
What if...she goes after Tohru and his family! He can't risk the life of his best friend!
It was either them, his loved ones, or the students of Class 1-C, his students.
Madam: Well Geysis...have you made your choice?
Geysis clenched his fists before narrowly looking down.
Geysis: Yes Madam. I will do as I am told.
Madam: Good. Now remember this. You WILL never question me again. Everytime I ask to do something. You WILL do it. DO YOU UNDERSTAND???
She spoke the last line with venom with a hint of malice in it.
He can NEVER say no to the commission. Because saying NO is like asking for a death sentence.
Geysis: Yes Ma'am....(My students. I'm so sorry...)
~End Flashback~
Geysis wasn't just the Thousand Elf Hero.
Like Hawks, He was a soldier.
A solider whose only duty is to follow orders and is a pawn built for blame.
But if he isn't...? Then what good is he anymore?
Because if he isn't a solider nor a hero...
Then who is truly Geysis?
Hero? Solider? Pawn? Scapegoat?
Murderer???
Geysis:......
Whoever said cowardice is easier than being brave...they were surely RIGHT.
