XIX. Dreams Can Be Deadly
"I knew I'd find you here,"said Dane, as he slipped onto the grass beside Zion, who was gazing at the ocean waves in front of him. "You had Ahsid worried sick about you."
"Sorry,"murmured Zion.
His eyes were lost and Dane felt as if he was invading his personal space.
"Maybe I should go," and he had stood up when Zion lunged at his hand and forced him down.
"Shut up, buddy,"snarled Zion,"you don't have to act as if I am all lovey-dovey and a little pup."
"Why would you be either one of these things?"
Dane tried to hide the smirk but it showed up anyway.
"Uggh...now you are laughing at me."
Dane genuinely smiled at that. He wondered what made both of them so compatible to each other, considering them being polar opposites.
"Hey, what do you do if you are afraid that your dream may destroy the lives of others?"
Dane thought for a minute and then answered,"I would try to minimize the damage for that person and follow my dream if it was beneficial for the society."
Zion sighed. "He did not even care for his people! I understand that royalty can be choking but the entire werewolf community was thrown into limbo. A fine distinction has appeared between the rich and the poor, there are no proper health facilities and every month or other, you hear about some werewolf pack attacking another."
Dane was quiet.
It was of utmost importance to have a leader in all the races that occured in the planet. They not only provided support to their own community but also forged bonds and alliances with other communities. They were an idol for all the young children of the race.
For many decades, the royal family of the werewolves were in conflict with each other. Zion had tried to rally the packs to stay strong until an interim leader was chosen but when King Ethan Lockwood went missing, there was nothing he could do.
"Zion, why did you not ascend the throne? It would have been so much easier at that time."
"I didn't want to take advantage of the conflict within the family. It should have been a fair decision made by the wishes and choices of the people. The King...no matter what, a leader should always be by the side of his people."
Dane nodded. "Are you okay with Ahsid coming to know of this tomorrow?"
Zion nodded a yes. "I trust her. Knowing Ahsid, she might already be making plans about our confrontation."
Dane agreed, chuckling at the thought of Ahsid chalking out their plan.
"You like her, don't you?"
Dane was taken aback at first but then retorted,"Just like you do."
"That does not make any sense, Dane."
"You don't make any sense, Zion."
They both began to laugh at their silly banter.
"By the way, Ahsid wanted me to take her to the Disko. I thought you should know that I agreed to it."
Dane only sighed.
"You aren't mad?"
"As long as I tag along with you, it should be alright."
Zion agreed that he would inform him when they went.
After sitting together for fifteen minutes, Dane suggested they head back to the Coetus.
"She won't come for training, right?"
Dane shook her head. "It was too much for her after all. She deserves a well earned rest after that."
"Dane, there's something I need to tell you about her."
Dane waited.
"I can talk to Ahsid when I am in wolf form. She could hear me and we could communicate."
"That's impossible,"murmured Dane. "How is she so...resilient?"
Zion laughed but did not answer, letting the silence hang about in the air. Finally, Dane opened a portal back to the Coetus and in a whoosh, they landed right in the mansion grounds, only to witness a startling surprise.
