XII. Onset Of Training
Ahsid was quiet in the morning, secretly worried about Dane. Her mind kept replaying the incidents of yesterday, Dane's shaking, crying frame and she muttered to herself,"Everybody has a chapter they don't read out aloud."
She had decided that Dane was strong and brave and noble but the pain bottled up inside him, it mirrored the wilderness in hers. Maybe, one day, she too would have the courage to tell him about her feelings and hopes.
She did not get any time to rest before as she had to get ready for school. She wondered what her friends would say if they knew about her late night trips. By the time she knew it, she was fast asleep in the fourth period.
"Ahsid, Ahsid,"nudged Ethan.
Ahsid gave a start and sprang backwards yelling,"Get out Dane, Zion!"
Her chair almost toppled over and she would have fallen had Ethan not steadied the chair.
"You okay? Are you hurt?"
Ahsid looked around her confused.
"Umm, Ahsid, did you even sleep last night?"
Ahsid relaxed, sighing,"No no, I have been sleeping for hours."
Ethan laughed and retorted,"Well, we have a half day today. Maybe, I can walk you home and..."
Flustered, Ahsid stood up hurriedly. "I completely forgot Ms. Naomi wanted to meet me. Gotta fly,"and she ran off, bumping into two people in the way.
Ethan was quiet. He knew she was hiding something and had made up some random excuses to avoid the topic. He wondered whether it was something serious or not. Nevertheless, he was a bit disappointed as he had expected Ahsid to at least trust her.
Ahsid sighed in relief. This was a freaking hard secret to keep. Calming herself, she smiled at the prospect of being trained. That night, Ahsid paced nervously around her balcony, waiting for Dane. Two minutes past 10:30 pm already. Dane was never a minute late. Would...had he...No, two minutes late and her already wild imagination was running amok.
"Yo, Ahsid,"came a shout.
Startled, Ahsid peered down to find Zion of all people, waving his hand and grinning infectiously. Ahsid's eyes widened and she hurriedly placed a finger to her mouth, not wanting her parents to hear them or even see Zion. She had completely forgotten that many people could not see or hear the creatures of the other world. Zion lassoed the rope through the grills which she caught nimbly. Sliding down, the first thing that she said was,"Where is Dane?"
Zion gave a sad smile,"Ouch! Looks like you don't want to see me."
"Wow, you pick up on things pretty fast."
Zion gaped once, twice then laughed a hearty laugh. "He had some mission to go on. But since he didn't want to waste any time, us good friends of his Coetus decided to help with you. But don't worry, he will be back soon. He will feel no peace with you alone around us."
Ahsid shrugged,"I am guessing Baby isn't here."
Zion wiped off a fake tear,"Did you really think I'd be so unprepared?"
And he suddenly morped into the bluest wolf that she had ever seen. He gave a smug look, if wolves could give smug looks and purred. Ahsid muttered several profanities at him and climbed onto his back. With a howl, he leapt forward, Ahsid clutching his long hair, nervously. The wind whipped past her ears, yet she felt quite comfortable.
Suddenly, a voice spoke into her mind,"Satisfied back there?"
Ahsid was suprisingly composed.
"Sort of, though I prefer Baby to you."
"The hell? I thought you would freak out with a voice in your head,"started Zion, for it was he,"Did Dane tell you I could do that?"
"It's not unique to you. Any well trained werewolf can do it."
Zion let out a joyous howl through the air. "Guess you weren't joking when you said you were fond of werewolves."
Ahsid smiled.
"I had something to ask you. Coud you take me to the Disko once?"
Zion didn't reveal his opinion on the matter, though Ahsid knew he would be raising his brows questioningly. "I didn't ask Dane to as I felt he wasn't fond of it."
"You're right. I might be Dane's best pal, but the Disko is something...well, I don't know but he just hates it. I think I could take you sometime. You would have a lot of fun."
Ahsid whopped in delight. Zion guffawed, if wolves could guffaw away.
In no time, Ahsid found herself in front of the Coetus gates.
"Did it take much lesser time to reach here?"
"Yep, my conversation skills kept you company."
Ahsid rolled her eyes.
Zion smirked,"I might have taken a few shortcuts."
"Which would expose you to more people,"said Ahsid.
"What, there are risks but it is time efficient,"defended Zion,"plus, I thought you like taking risks."
"You people already take so much risks,"said Ahsid forcefully.
Zion perked his eyebrows once again. But then, he smiled. It felt nice for a change to spend time with someone who was so...well, Ahsid could not be exactly described in one word. She was special, but what was she actually? Zion had not told Ahsid but if she were a human, she would not have been able to hear him speaking into her head. Perhaps, Ahsid would freak out! He decided it would be best to talk to Dane about it alone.
"Earth to wolf, Earth to werewolf,"said Ahsid, waving her palms in front of his face.
"Uhh, sorry, I zoned out,"apologized Zion.
He walked towards the gate, a trifle suprised that Ahsid did not badger him with questions. He was glad that she respected his privacy.
"We are going towards the back."
Ahsid nodded.
"The others might have come already. Just be yourself,"encouraged Zion.
Ahsid's poor hands began to sweat, as she rubbed her index finger with her thumb, nervously.
