Chapter 6
"I refuse."
Haru blatantly turned down what the chief offered him to do. Well, no one could blame him, after all. He was a man who was set on believing what he thinks is just. So, with someone just barging into the picture and that said person going against his ideals, he just couldn't stomach the fact that he was now going to work with him.
"Forget it then. Oh! But," the chief paused, before finally remembering another addition to his team. "There's also someone else joining us other than Mr. Kambe, so-" If he was the one who cut himself off earlier, the reason why he was now unable to conclude his statement was because of the door opening, and with two new individuals coming forth into sight.
Haru felt his heart skip a beat once he saw who was with.. that poor excuse of an officer. Warmth immediately flooded his cheeks, going all the way to the tips of his ears. It's been a long time since he's seen someone looking so dangerously attractive that's not a part of the entertainment industry. So of course, he thought that it was quite normal for him to feel like that. He's still a man, after all. It seemed like the others gawked upon the newcomer as well.
Your outfit for the day was a khaki-colored woolen coat, white blouse underneath and a black skirt to complete the overall look. There was just an air around you that screamed elegance, that you were enclosed in an own space of yours that's different from normal folks like them.
"Ah, Mr. Kambe and Ms L/n! Have a seat over there," and with that, you two complied and went to your respective stations. It just so happened that you were right beside him. "Ah! Ms., you haven't introduced yourself yet, have you? Please do so," you just nodded at him before standing up, bowing afterwards to show respect to everyone who're now your colleagues.
"I'm L/n Y/n, pleased to be in your care," and without a moment to spare, you took a seat once again, only sparing a glance at your fiancé who seemed to be so bored that he thought that it was for the best if he stared at you like you were some kind of meal. "Excuse me.." A voice entered the ears of you both, and you just silently thanked her for she was the one who stopped that man from boring holes into your head.
"Would you two like one? This is the latest Gummy Fish.." And she was quite cute, that much you could say after just one look at her. The both of you simultaneously placed a hand out for her to put the snack on. "The snapper ones..! How luckyyy." Once done giving you both the treat, Daisuke inspected it as if it had a bomb on it or something.
"Aaah!!" And you were glad you popped the treat on your mouth before that man screamed or else you were certain that it would've slipped out of your grasp. "Akiko Hoshida, the gravure model, died because of drug overdose," and the grief lacing his voice was quite hard to not notice. "Seriously?!" Your co-workers are quite the lively bunch, huh?
You, Daisuke, and the pink-ette just watched the commotion caused by the two. "Chief, I'm going to the theft prevention program," the man, whose name you still didn't know, volunteered. The chief was quick to agree though, just glad that someone already decided to take the job.
You, who was walking beside Daisuke, followed the volunteer, a few steps behind, of course. It looked like he began to grow annoyed with those that followed him, so he turned, an annoyed look on his face as he growled at your fiancé. Though, his expression changed into a more pleasant one once he saw that you were also there.
"What are you two doing?" He asked, though he bit back his snarky tone for he didn't want to scare off the lady which was you. "We're joining you," you took the initiative to answer him since it was obvious that Daisuke's mere presence alone aggravates this man.
"I can do this alone," and he shot you a smile, a narrowed look at Kambe, before continuing his walk, but you two who were behind him didn't even falter because of what he's said. "That means that you two don't need to tag along," and even though he said that, you just shook your head. This time, it was Daisuke's turn to speak.
"Take us to the crime scene, Inspector Kato." And you were correct with your assumption that Kato dislikes the one whom you're engaged to. Relatable.
So that's what his name was. Kato, huh?

.
A yawn left you, your hand, which wasn't carrying anything, was used as a cover for your mouth. "You seem to be lacking of sleep. Why's that?" Ugh, Captain Obvious. Of course it was because of that damned event you two went to the other day! You were right that those rich, stuck up brats that were there wanted nothing but to suck up on you. Trying to maintain your already raging self yesterday was anything but easy.
You knew that that was how Kambe planned it to be. After all, you weren't blind to see that there was less people flocking on him, most just turning towards you since they thought you'd be the gullible type for you were so young. Clicking your tongue, you just breathed in and out to try and compose yourself once more. "And whose fault do you think it was, huh? Dragging me to that wretched party even though I was against it," and you complained more and more underneath your breath as the three of you used your feet to finally head back to your department.
Kato just remained silent. You two were far closer than he expected two new co-workers to be. Did you two already meet before? His queries no longer remained as a question for the clarity he needed was already given to him.
"You're my fiancé after all. You need to accompany me to those gatherings," Daisuke uttered out the term with such emphasis that it just made you grumble more for you knew that there was nothing wrong with what he said.
Daisuke isn't an idiot after all. He is perfectly capable of perceiving the fact that the man beside him has taken an interest towards you.
So he obviously took the best course of action.
And that was to let 'that' Kato know that you were already claimed by him.
