Chapter 5: When To Fight
The bright sun of Saturday matched Hunter's enthusiastic and happy mood. He'd been waiting a long time for the day where he'd truly try out his powers with his friends, from the moment he parted the curtains and let light into his mostly black room he carried an excited smirk.
Today was the first day he was going to wear the amateurish costume he prepared. It was sleeveless and rather tight at the top, while a little looser and allowing for mobility around the legs, the color was mostly black with patterns of green mainly covering the chest and above. It was rough due to Hunter's lacking design skill but fit him well.
The best part was the feeling, he looked in the mirror and didn't just see Hunter, he saw the Temporalist.
There was too much excitement for him or his parents to give a lengthy goodbye. They told him to stay safe and hugged before he immediately left the house in costume. The Temporalist was meeting his partners at the police station in five minutes, plenty of time he thought while the green glow started emanating from his eyes.
''Two minutes until we're signing up,'' Koji said while shifting his glance from his watch to Scarlett: ''Think he'll make a flashy entrance again?'' Scarlett smiled at the comment.
''He just got his gift, of course he will!'' She explained before looking back at the urban yet lightly crowded streets behind her: ''Any second, just watch...'' Her voice trailed off while she gazed at the mostly gray city and the cars uneventfully crossing the green traffic light.
As Scarlett suspected it took a few seconds before they saw a green flash moving closer and Hunter suddenly appeared right in front of them, the glowing trail right behind him. Hunter stopped suddenly and put his hands on his knees before starting to pant heavily and Scarlett noticed how well the new costume fit his form.
''See?'' Scarlett asked while smirking against Koji, who disregarded her comment and asked Hunter:
''Out of shape, cowboy?'' In an obviously teasing voice. Hunter kept panting for a few seconds before taking a deep breath and standing straight.
''It seems like it can take a lot of energy to use my powers,'' Hunter took stopped to breathe: ''Weren't Vlad and Lance coming?'' He looked around to see nothing but their absence. Koji and Scarlett looked at each other before Koji replied:
''Vlad had to study or something, not too sure, said that he couldn't come,'' his voice suddenly turned a bit more uncomfortable: ''Lance? Well...'' Scarlett picked up before Koji could continue:
''The police won't let people without powers into the Daysquad, so he didn't see the point of coming.'' Hunter sighed out of empathy for Lance, but he couldn't do much to help, not now. Before entering the station he regarded the costumes his friends wore
The trio started towards the counter for signing up to the Daysquad right as they entered the police station. An advertisement was made to be obvious above the registration desk, it read: ''Daysquad: For the young who wish to help their city.'' The group knew it was just to gather interest in police work, but none of them were going to complain about clever advertising.
It was a quick process for them to sign up, a nice man at the desk guided them through the risks and rules that they'd already read up on. Apparently no one else signed on for today, young adults must be busy with other things on a Saturday.
After the registration they were told to wait a little bit, which they had no problem with. After minutes of casual conversation a young looking woman walked out from one of the doors, noticed the group, and immediately approached them before smiling and addressing them: ''Hey! You must be the ones that signed on for the Daysquad, am I right?''
''Yep, that's us,'' Koji replied with a friendly. The woman took a moment to regard his costume; a mostly blue top where the color faded around the legs.
''I'm Liara,'' she said with a warm voice: ''I'll be the Daysquad leader today. I'm supposed to thank you for taking an interest in the police department, but you three just want to try your powers, don't you?''
The trio looked at each other for a second before turning back to Liara and shrugging. She chuckled at their response before continuing: ''As long as you follow the rules and show enthusiasm, I don't mind.'' She took a few steps towards the door out: ''Maybe this day will interest you? Either way, let's get out there.'' Liara turned back to the door and kept walking while the group quickly stood up and followed her outside.
''You won't see much action today, we'll mostly be patrolling the city and learning some of the ropes behind police work in this town,'' Liara explained while putting her brown hair into a ponytail: ''Now, what do I call you three? I'm assuming you go by hero names today.'' She enjoyed seeing young ones who wanted to be heroes, whether or not they could actually pull it off their enthusiasm was delightful.
''The Temporalist,'' Hunter replied first, with obvious enthusiasm over his still recent power.
''Scarlet Angel,'' Scarlett didn't separate her real identity very much from her actual identity, covering her black costume in red patterns matching the color of her hair.
''Thunderhawk!'' Liara couldn't help herself from chuckling at Koji's admittedly ridiculous name, Scarlett and Hunter joined in on her reaction but Koji only smiled, not minding their tone.
''Alright you three,'' Liara started while unable to contain the enjoyment in her voice: ''Let's go on patrol.'' She started venturing into the corners of the city with the trio following close behind, excited for the day.
The time flew by quickly, the Daysquad mostly just got to study how Liara handled common situations while the hours of an uneventful day passed. It managed to be interesting albeit not what the young heroes were hoping to do. By the time dusk was rolling in Liara looked up and spoke: ''Think it's about time to end the patrol, you can hardly call it Daysquad anymore anyways.''
''We've been at it for a while I sup-'' Scarlett started before a thundering explosion cut her off and drew all their attention, a fireball was still visible above the rooftops, it could hardly be further than a block away.
''This is where it ends for you kids!'' Liara shouted while the others were still shocked over the explosion, she drew her gun and continued: ''Go home, now!''
''Like hell we are!'' Hunter responded: ''This is what we signed on for today!''
''You signed on for some patrolling and a look at the police,'' Liara said while moving towards the explosion: ''I signed on to make sure you're safe, and I'm not taking a risk here.'' She held out her hand against the trio and a wall of light erected between them. Hunter immediately rushed at the sudden wall and punched it with no effect except an aching hand.
''What is this!'' He shouted while looking at Liara jogging towards the explosion, she turned for a second to respond:
''My gift!'' After hearing the reply Hunter turned back to the other two and shouted:
''We gotta help her!'' He took a few steps towards the others.
''I don't know...'' Scarlett started: ''She has a point, whoever did that probably has an explosive gift and we're not really trained or anything.''
''Scarlett does have a point, Hunter, Temporalist, whatever,'' Koji adds: ''Besides, how would we get there!?'' He gestures towards the wall of energy right down the alley. They made good points, better than Hunter wanted to admit.
''I can run around, I'm fast enough,'' Hunter started: ''You guys know I ca-''
''Hunter,'' Koji cut him off: ''Liara and the police can handle this one, let's go home.''
Hunter considered the options for a moment, he met Scarlett's eyes as she nodded to him before deciding within himself and speaking: ''Alright,'' he smiled: ''Let's go home.''
