02 First Encounter
Eji. I said inside my head.
No response. As usual.
Eji is not some made up character in my head or such. Well in a sense she kind of is too. I swear though she's not my imaginary girlfriend or something just to get that cleared up. Eji was the avatar form of my super unnatural power and she appeared the day I inherited my powers, which I believe was the day I was born. I imagine her as a young, warm, elegant female figure, though I never got a clear image of her. Sometimes when I concentrate real hard, I can see a blurry outline of her figure. The clearest picture I ever got was this: Long silky dark hair, beautiful white sundress and...I was never able to capture the eyes. For some impossible reason the eyes escape me. She spoke very rarely, and she never speaks whenever there are other people around. Sometimes she throws in a random comment here or there. But by the end of the day, the most she will ever say barely makes a paragraph. And when she chooses to be quiet she can be real quiet. Sometimes she might not even talk to me for months, then all of a sudden make a random comment in the middle of the day, that scares the living daylights out of me. But generally having a girl avatar that can speak in your head? Defiantly awesome.
But back to my mindreading of the silver hair Lolita girl. She didn't really have anything on her mind, other than the view of the train station with people rushing by honking and squawking and all that kind of stuff. Really the only unusual thing was her vision was a couple seconds ahead of mine. And every scene was 100% absolutely correct, even though the vision she sees in her head was a few seconds before the actual event happened. I rubbed my eyes several times, and observed for a several more minutes. In the end the only reasonable conclusion as impossible it is to believe was:
She can see the future.
***
"Um...hi." I said nervously.
Not so great for a pick up line I know, but without the ability to mindread clearly, I was literally handicapped in the area of dating.
Silence.
She didn't even turn and looked and me as she continue to stare ahead. I figured even if I screamed at the top of my tongues I probably wouldn't get a reaction, so I decide to try something different, it's was risky, but it was worth the risk:
"You...you can see the future?"
She actually turned and stared at me, and with nothing else I to do, I stared back at her. Seconds quickly turned into minutes. It and finally she decided to open her mouth. If she hadn't I would have thought she'd gone mute or something:
"Who are you?"
Her voice was soft, almost close to a whisper, I had to be 3 ft away from her to hear it. Any further and I would have completely missed it.
"Uh..."
Good question, I thought. I am nobody to be honest...yeah that sounds like of sad, but true at the same time.
"Just a stranger who can read minds, totally not suspicious or anything..."
Shit. I think I just f**ked up completely. Way to go, me.
"Very well then. Follow me."
Wait...what? WTF is going on right now? Did my lines just work somehow? Well not knowing what her true intention really was, I followed her outside of the sky train station and across a few streets and stopped in one of those abandoned shack. My heart began race, my palm began to sweet, and my nerve began to tighten. I had never been in this kind of situation ever before in my life. Following a super cute Lolita girl into an abandoned shack, totally logical, nothing to worry, keep calm and what's the danger behind that anyways?
"So...what do you want me to do?" I asked nervously. The two of us stood 30ft apart from one another totally alone. It was just the two of us, then out from nowhere she pulls out a pistol and aimed it in the general direction of my body. Not knowing whether this was some sort of test or joke. I attempted to read her mind once again. This time I learned two things: first the gun was real, second she was actually going to shoot. Even though I found these snippets of information impossible to believe, I trusted my instinct. As I backed up a couple of steps, the shot went wild and there was an ear piercing ring. I didn't turn around to see the next shot coming, I just turned and ran on all fours out of the shack. When I was near approaching the door, another shot went off, luckily I ducked as the bullet went straight pass the iron door one inch above my head. With zero hesitation, I pulled open the door and went made a mad dash for the streets. A cyclist just appeared to pass by, after doing a brief mind read, I stepped off the curb and stood right in its path. The driver honked his horn and screamed at me to get out of his way but I remained firm. And like I anticipated he stopped 3ft away from me, got of the bike and...BAM. I knife hand him hard on the right side of his neck, knocking him out immediately. I knew this was robbery. But it was out of necessity for self-defence. Then without further time wasted, I hoped onto the seat of the bike and accelerated like there was no tomorrow. Just when I thought I lost her, a black sedan pulled up from behind me and traveled alongside me with almost uniform velocity. Then all of a sudden the car's back passenger window pulled down, revealing the previous silver hair Lolita girl, who was now pointing her hand gun at me once again. A shot rang out again, this time I swear the bullet missed the tire by about half an inch, any closer the entire bike would probably flip over from the shock, resulting in the instant death of mine. And those deaths aren't particularly pretty. I have to lose her quick, because at this rate I figured she would probably ask her driver and run me over or something. I had to get away, and fast. I tried looking several streets ahead through Eji, one of the thoughts I observed was coming across a crosswalk on my left. From his view I saw only a few pedestrians, crossing that intersection. So I decided to take another huge risk. In the next 3 or 5 seconds, when we reached the intersection, I made a sharp turn for the left, cutting straight through the pedestrians. There was some unhappy shouts and rude hand gestures fired at me, but it was defiantly better compared to actually getting shot. Then out from the gloom another shot went off and by some miracle missed me.
When I looked up I noticed the road ahead was going to blend into the highway and to the side is some sort of small pond right beside the sidewalk. I decided to a take a deadly risk that might as well kill myself. I drove my bike sideways off the curb, causing me and the bike to go flying through the air. A bullet whizzed past my head, when I was still literally airborne for the one or two seconds before I plumed head first into the lake. Luckily the lake was several meters deep, and you could say that I was somewhat of a decent swimmer. Not willing to risk surfacing and getting hit by the bullet, I went under water the whole time before I reached the shore. I was dying for air, it must have been 100ft distance or something, but it felt more like an underwater tunnel that went on forever and ever. Well, whatever, I made it to the other side and ended up in some sort of park. After catching up my breath for several seconds, I got up onto my feet again and began running. At that point I didn't care which direction I was running. All I cared about was getting away. A minute or so later, I ended up in front of a large water fountain.it was one of those fountains that played music and had the water dancing to the rhythm of the music. Several people cocked their heads at me, but none of them really give an s**t for a random Asian who was all wet and crawling in the park. I closed my eyes and laid down on the ground in exhaustion. Then I heard noises. Noises of people scattering, without even looking up, I felt a cool shadow looming above me, shading most of my body from the sun. When I opened my eyes, I found myself face to face with the same silver hair Lolita girl from the train station, except this time she had the pistol pointed directly at my forehead. Her expression calm, her grip firm, but her eyes were doubtful.
"Aren't you going to shoot me?" I asked with a pint of sarcasm.
"Who are you?" her voice was calm and stern at the same time.
"I told you. I am just a random guy who can read minds."
She stared at me, I stared at her. There was a long stretch of silence between us, like two opposite cliffs that were thousands of kilometers apart from another. Thinking the timing is right, I raised my voice and spoke. "You're not going to shoot me, you're out of bullets. You never brought an extra clip because you never thought something like this would happen. Which I can totally understand." I finished the sentence with a shrug.
Seconds passed, before she finally decided to lower her gun.
***
The music fountain danced, the birds sang, the sky began pulling the down the curtain of day, and put on the cloak of night.
I finally decided to sit up because my back was starting to hurt like a b****. Anyhow I sat up and laid my back against the fountain and began to talk again:
"So what's your name?" I asked the silver hair Lolita who stood beside me still as a statue.
"You already know."
"Well yep...but I want to hear it from you."
It was one of those long stretches of silence again, just when I thought she's gone mute again, she spoke:
"Mi."
"Mi...that is quite a strange name..." the words just blurred out of my mouth, and I really hated myself for saying that, before any damage was dealt, I quickly corrected myself:
"But I like it." I added a smile. "Oh in case you are wondering my name is Li-Ying, you can just call me Ying."
She didn't respond.
"Is there any way or method I can contact you?"
"None."
It was a pretty rhetorical question, because from the information I got from reading her mind, she didn't travel much and didn't own a cell phone.
I really wanted to cry.
"Is there just some way I can get in touch of you?"
I know this sounds quite weird if you apply the situation; trying to get in touch with a super cute girl who tried to kill you. Totally makes sense.
"Tomorrow. This place."
That was all she said, before she turned and left.
There was no exact time; all she said was tomorrow, this place. But deep in my heart I was grateful. Something was better than nothing. And this just might be a date or something. And it looks like my summer here is not going to be so boring after all.
"ACHOOO!!!" I was perhaps the loudest sneeze that ever came from me; I bet the whole park could hear it. I sneezed two more times in a row after that.
Holy crap, I think I just caught a cold.
