Chapter 16
Sarah
The last week of camp is going by really fast. I know I shouldn't be spending as much time with Jared because of my dad. I know I shouldn't because in only two days he will get on that bus and I'll never see him again. But I just can't help it. He's so fun and even though we are literally exact opposites we get each other.
Since everyone is leaving in a couple days I didn't have much to do. All the campers are packing their bags so
I can't really hang out with them. We usually don't plan any rides or games or anything on the last couple days of camp except for the last trail ride on the last day of camp.
The last trail ride is just like all the others except it's the last one. Well, that's not completely true. There is one difference.
This time it's not just a two hour long horse ride. It's about three hours long and it's a scavenger hunt. Each thing on the list of items you need to find has something to do with camp this year. It may be very subtle and you may never figure out why it's on the list but there is a reason.... Usually.
When the girls come over one of the things we do is make the list. My parents help too and there are usually about fifteen things on it. I may have added a "Forget-me-not" to the list. I don't know where your going to find a such a flower in Texas or if they even can grow here but I guess we'll find out. Besides, the way it works, you have three hours and a partner to find as many items as possible. The pair with most wins.
But that's not until the last day of camp.
I didn't have anything to do today so I just sat on the couch looking at the pictures I took yesterday. I thought about how that day will just fade into memory and I won't ever see any of those people again. It made me feel pretty sad that the I'll only be able to see the pictures from the tiny screen of the camera.
Almost as if she read my mind my mom said to me " You know you could go down to Walgreens and get those printed."
"Really? They do that?" I only thought you could print photos from your own printer or something. I know a lot about horses and goats and chickens but very little about stuff that seems so common. Now that I think about it though, we have a bunch of family photos framed around the house. I hadn't thought about how we had those printed.
"Yeah. I'll give you some money and you can go down there now if you want." My mom has been a lot gentler about the Jared situation. I think she wants to like him and trust him but it's not that easy to trust someone who, all you know, is lying to everyone.
She handed me some money and I went outside to saddle Buttons, my favorite horse. Before I left the house I asked how many pictures this money would get me. She told me about ten.
I started going through my pictures and picked out about ten pictures to print. One was of Kyle, Brooke, Jared and me. Another of me and Brooke acting silly with mustaches from our ponytails. One of Jared and me. One of Jared and a horse named Popcorn. He was a palomino. The horse, not Jared.
I rode Buttons to Walgreens. She looked a bit out of place in a parking lot but I tied her up there anyway. I went inside to ask about the pictures. This employee lead me over to a Kiosk with a bunch of photos. After a while I left Walgreens with a couple of pictures and big smile on my face. I had a little extra money so bought a picture frame too.
When I got home I laid the pictures on my shelf and sat on my bed. I still had the one of me and Jared in my hand I just stared at it.
I thought about how I wont ever see him again. How I feel when he smiles at me. How we get we get each other so well. I just thought about everything. I hadn't even realized that hours had passed as I was thinking. My mom called from downstairs "Supper time!"
