{9} Road Trip

***

You see, there are a few reasons why Vienna never liked the faction performances whenever they came up. One is that she never liked being on stage and two is because something always seemed to go wrong whenever it was around the time for the performances to take place. This recent time, there had been a unicorn that showed up on campus and a worm that infected it started infecting other people.

This started a fight between Lizzie and Josie that Vienna was caught in the middle of. Not only that, the urn that the school had ended up being taken away. Because the urn was out there, the urn had been causing plague-like things to happen. In order to stop them from happening, they had to travel to find the urn... Which would lead to the worse car ride of Vienna's life. Trust Vienna when she says that there couldn't be anything worse than the car ride that she would have to suffer through.

Squished in one van were two teachers, one headmaster, and five students. You can imagine how cramped it was. Dr. Saltzman and Kaleb sat up front while Dorian, Emma, and Josie sat in the main back. This left Hope, Lizzie, and Vienna sitting in the middle of the van they were in. Vienna could see Kaleb glancing around the van until he finally said, "Dr. Saltzman, this van is very... White of you."

"It's retro." Dr. Saltzman tried to defend himself.

A scoff escaped Vienna, "That's definitely one word for it."

"It's a gas-guzzling atrocity on wheels," Lizzie stated.

With a sigh, Hope came up from being bent down to grab something. In her hand she held a bag, "I brought snacks."

That was the only thing that Vienna needed to hear. She was basically bouncing with excitement, "Yay, something to make the ride bearable." Before Hope could even think, Vienna was reaching into the bag and taking a bag of chips out of it. She wasted no time at all in opening the chips and munching on them. Snacks had to be one of her favorite things ever.

Unlike Vienna, who was obviously happy about the snacks, Lizzie found some way to discredit Hope's gesture, "Oh, sweet," You could clearly hear the sarcasm in her voice. "Did you pack them before or after you decided to FOMO your way onto our trip?"

"Like I'm gonna let you guys chase monsters without me?" Hope tried to keep it lighthearted.

This was not going to fly with Lizzie. She made sure of it, "I would've thought you wanted to spend the break canoodling with your hipster boyfriend." If there was one thing that Vienna knew about her cousin, it was that she would take any chance to take a shot at Hope. She disliked her more than anything for multiple reasons. Some were known reasons while some were secret.

"Sorry for wanting to protect the outside world from my mistakes," Hope stated, trying to not let Lizzie get to her with her words. "You know, there's currently an urn on a river cruise spreading plagues across America because I thought a unicorn was cute," Now that was definitely... Something. Glancing behind her, Vienna saw that Josie put in some earphones to block out the conversation that Hope and Lizzie were having. If only Vienna thought that far ahead. "It's called accountability. Maybe there's a bracelet for it."

Yeah, Vienna did not want to listen to this conversation anymore. In a high-pitched voice, Vienna said, "You know what, I think I might just take a nap instead." She rolled up her bag of chips and placed them into the mini-backpack that she brought with her. The backpack contained her psychic paper along with her silver wand.

Making herself as comfortable as she could in the cramped car, Vienna tried to sleep. It was a little hard with arguing coming from Lizzie and Hope but she managed. Instead of having a regular dream or no dream at all, Vienna was stuck with having yet another dream about the Doctor.

From what Vienna was able to tell, he was in some kind of military base with Amy by his side. Vienna had to admit. It was actually comforting to see him again, especially since the last time she saw him was in her nightmare where he had died. Though Vienna was happy to see the Doctor, he did not look happy in the slightest. He had his sights set on a robot.

This robot looked like a fancy peppershaker. It had a plunger and some kind of whisk that was currently holding a tray. The robot seemed to be looking straight at the Doctor with its... Eye? Vienna didn't really know what to call it. The robot spoke with a voice that was robotic, which was to be expected, "Would you care for some tea?"

The question seemed to anger the Doctor. He slapped the tray out of the robot's... hands? Again, Vienna wasn't really sure. The Doctor started to yell in the face of the machine, "Stop this!" The robot rolled backward, almost like it was scared of the Doctor and his reaction. "What are you doing here? What do you want?"

"We seek only to help you." The robot replied.

"To do what?" The Doctor narrowed his eyes at it.

The next thing the machine said was spoken with confidence, "To win the war."

"Really?" The way the Doctor said this sounded like he was amused by what the robot had said. It was almost like he didn't believe the robot was telling him the whole truth. The Doctor probed the robot with more questions, "Which war?"

After a moment of silence, the robot responded, "I do not understand."

"This war, against the Nazis, or your war?" The Doctor inquired. Vienna nodded to herself. She knew where the Doctor was then. He was during a time when the war with the Nazis was raging on still. That meant that he was most likely in Britain as well. "The war against the rest of the Universe? The war against all life forms that are not Dalek?"

Still, the robot didn't seem to know what he was referring to, "I do not understand. I am your soldier." The robot voiced its confusion.

"Oh, yeah?" The Doctor at the robot, a look of anger on his face. "Okay. Okay, soldier, defend yourself." The Doctor picked up a huge spanner and started beating the robot with it. The action made Vienna jump as she watched with wide eyes filled with shock. She had never seen him act like this. She had never seen him filled with so much... Anger.

The others in the room seemed to be just as surprised as Vienna was. The first to voice their concern was a large man that was very well-dressed and had a monocle, "Doctor, what the devil?"

"You do not require tea?" The robot wasn't even fazed by the Doctor's attack.

"Stop him!" Another man with glasses shouted at the large man. "Prime Minister, please."

Prime Minister? If this was the war with the Nazis and the man called him the Prime Minister then that must mean... Oh, my God, that was Winston Churchill. Vienna stared at the Prime Minister in awe as Churchill continued to shout to the Doctor, "Doctor, what the devil? Please, these machines are precious."

Not caring for what the man was saying, the Doctor yelled into the face of the robot once more, "Come on. Fight back," He grabbed the eye of the robot to make it look at him directly. "You want to, don't you? You know you do."

"I must protest." The man from before stated.

"What are you waiting for?" The Doctor went back to beating the robot. "Look, you hate me," The Doctor ceased his attack and hit his chest. He stared at the robot with such hate. It almost scared Vienna how angry and hateful he looked. "You want to kill me. Well, go on. Kill me," He hit the robot once more and yelled, "Kill me!"

It was at this moment that Amy ran toward the Doctor, "Doctor, be careful."

"Please desist from striking me," The robot informed him. "I am your soldier."

Again, the Doctor struck the robot. He struck it with each word he said, "You are my enemy!" He stopped hitting the robot to yell, "And I am yours. You are everything I despise," The Doctor spoke with a normal tone once more. "The worst thing in all creation. I've defeated you time and time again. I've defeated you. I sent you back into the Void," Once more, the Doctor's voice started to become louder, "I saved the whole of reality from you. I am the Doctor. And you are the Daleks." The Doctor jumped and kicked the robot, now known as a Dalek.

The Dalek rolled back and after a moment, it said, "Correct," The Dalek rolled forward and focused on the Doctor, "Review testimony."

The sound of the Doctor's voice played, "I am the Doctor. And you are the Daleks."

"Testimony," The Doctor looked at the Dalek with confusion. "What are you talking about, testimony?" Vienna had an idea as to what they meant. The Doctor obviously knew the Daleks but they didn't seem to know him. They were probably dormant and the only thing that could activate them was the Doctor telling them who he was and/or what they were.

"Transmitting testimony now." Another Dalek spoke.

"Transmit what, where?" The Doctor asked.

"Testimony accepted." The other Dalek confirmed.

It was at that moment that Vienna woke up. She glanced around to see that they were still on the road. Looking beside her, she let out a groan as she saw that she was still stuck in the seats with Hope and Lizzie with her. She knew that she was too awake to fall back asleep which meant that she would have to listen to the two of them argue.

With her hands on her head, Lizzie asked her father, "We there yet?"

Finally, the car stopped. Dr. Saltzman sounded relieved and annoyed as he said. "Yes!"

That ended up being a trick question. Dorian, Emma, and Dr. Saltzman had all gotten out of the car while the younger ones had to stay in the car. They were going to drop Dorian off so he could scope out the river to see if the urn had washed up anywhere. After a little waiting, Emma and Dr. Saltzman came back to the car. They drove until they reached the town. It seemed like a really pretty town. It looked very quaint.

"Welcome to Maple Hollows," Kaleb said as he looked at the sign.

"Girls," Dr. Saltzman addressed the younger girls. "You take the fountain area. See what you can find out." Does that mean that Vienna had to listen to more of Hope and Lizzie's arguing? Could this day honestly get any worse?

The car stopped for the last time. Vienna had never been happier to be on solid ground. The girls all decided to split up to ask the locals questions about the town. Vienna had used her psychic paper to try and see if they would tell her anything if she pretended to be someone important. Unfortunately, the girl came up with absolutely nothing. She met up at the fountain with the others with no information to give. She just hoped that they had something.

That hope was immediately squashed by Josie, "Fun fact: the town has the biggest ball of yarn in the country," Vienna raised an eyebrow at her statement. What did that have to do with anything? "And nobody's seen anything strange." Great so at least she wasn't the only thing with nothing.

"I didn't find anything either," Vienna held up the psychic paper. "I even pretended to be part of an important organization and, still, no one told me anything."

Staring at the object with confusion, Josie questioned her, "I thought Dad took that from you."

Vienna shook her head, "No, he took my silver wand from me. Although," Reaching into her bag, Vienna pulled the object out of her bag. She held it up for her cousin to see with a big grin on her face, "I brought that too." How she loved to be sneaky.

"This isn't exactly a hotspot of activity," Lizzie stated. Vienna agreed with her. She had asked multiple people if anything strange had been happening lately but they all gave her the same answer. That nothing strange ever happened in this town and the world would end as soon as something did. The most she got was just small-town gossip. "Our hopes of finding anything are going up in smoke."

While Vienna didn't think anything about what Lizzie said, Hope had other ideas, "Wait, are passive-aggressively referring to that fire in my dorm three years ago?"

A groan escaped Vienna, "Guys, this really isn't the ti-"

No one listened to what the girl had to say. Lizzie only cut her off, "You mean the one you set on purpose to sabotage our spring break trip with our dad? No, Hope. Why would I talk about that?" Because it was all that you ever talked about when Vienna asked why you didn't like Hope. That had been one of the reasons that Lizzie repeated over and over again as the reason why she hated the girl.

"Dude, you've lost it." Hope stated.

Standing up, Lizzie didn't look like she was going to let it go, "The only thing we lost was a week of quality family time. Dad had to cancel the trip to deal with the damage. So mission accomplished." Hope shook her head at Lizzie with annoyance and disbelief.

"You guys are just talking about ancient history," Josie told them.

"Exactly," Vienna agreed. "So let's just leave it and focus on what we came here to do."

Before anyone could say anything else, Josie shouted, "Ow!" Vienna looked over to see her grabbing her arm in pain. "Something stung me."

Pulling back her sleeve, the girls looked at Josie's arm. What they saw was a raised and angry red bump on Josie's arm. Someone had exclaimed, 'Ew!' in disgust and Vienna couldn't help but agree with them. Not being able to look at it any longer, Vienna looked away, placing a hand over her mouth as she felt like throwing up, "Josie, I mean this very empathetically, but I will need you to not show me that."

"Gross!" Lizzie also said.

All of a sudden, the sound of people screaming caught the girls' attention. They looked to see people running away from something. Vienna then noticed the swarm of locusts that were swarming around the area. She stared with a shocked look and she heard Hope say, "This is plague-y, right? It seems plague-y."

"It's plague-y," Josie stated.

Uh, yeah, Vienna did not care at the moment, "Let's not stick around to find out," Vienna was the first one to take off to find a place to hide. Hearing footsteps behind her, she knew that the others were now running with her. They hide near a building and waited until they didn't hear the flapping of wings anymore. Once the sounds stopped, Vienna cautiously stepped out, "I think we're in the clear."

The locusts that were once swarming now lay dead on the ground. The sight was enough for Hope to say, "We need to find your dad. This way."

They walked down the street to try and find the rest of the group. So far, there was a single sight of them nearby. Vienna guessed that they probably got caught up in the commotion as well and probably ran to find somewhere to hide. The silence was interrupted by Lizzie saying with as much passive aggressiveness as possible, "Does this way take us past the fire station?"

"Lizzie, let it go already. We're busy." Vienna sighed.

Thankfully, Hope was also done with the arguing, "Oh, my God," Her voice was full of disbelief, clearly shocked that Lizzie would want to continue arguing after what they had just gone through. "We barely just survived a biblical plague. For the last time, I didn't start that fire, and I've never ruined a spring break."

"Yeah, Lizzie," Josie spoke up. "Now's not the time."

"Fifth grade," Lizzie still persisted, grasping at any straws that she could get at this point. "You callously gave me the flu while we were building our float for witch week. With global warming, I may never see the Florida Keys. That's on you." It was like she was trying to find any reason to be mad at Hope at this point.

Not wanting to take the blame for that, Hope reminded her of something, "We built it with Alyssa Chang, who had pneumonia over spring break. It wasn't me, and neither was that fire."

"Um, hey..." Josie trailed off.

Upon hearing her speak, Vienna looked over. What she saw was even more disgusting than before. She gagged at the sight of a boil that had taken route on top of Josie's previous boil, "That's bloody disgusting."

The others didn't even notice it yet. Lizzie continued to take shots at Hope, "Why did I see you giving us a death glare through the window?"

They stopped walking. Whenever they did, Josie spoke up to catch their attention, "There's a boil on my boil." They turned their attention to the bump on Josie's arm.

As expected, they were also equally as disgusted.

"Oh, God!"

"Ew!"

At this point, Josie couldn't even look at it anymore, "I think I'm gonna be sick again."

"There's got to be something that we could do to fix..," Without looking at it, Vienna motioned to the bump on Josie's arm, "That."

That was enough to make Lizzie jump right on task. She snapped and took one last hit at Hope, "Pick up the pace, Mikaelson. My sister needs..." She stopped talking.

Another voice spoke, "Single file," Vienna saw men in hazmat suits. They were currently sweeping away the locusts and some were leading people over to a single file line. The man from before continued to say, "You're going to be safe. Get on the buses."

"Medical attention?" Lizzie finished. When noticing that the people in line also had boils like the one Josie had, they decided to go with them onto the bus. If these people were here because of what happened then they might know what to do to help Josie. This would probably be what the rest of their group would do also. They needed to help Josie and then find the others.
