Chapter 3- A New Identity
<><>
I shook the ringmaster's hand slowly.
"So uh, your the ringmaster to this place?" I muttered. He nodded excitedly.
"Yes sir! I'm the Ringmaster, but you can simply call me master. So, Sky, how have you liked the circus so far?" Before I was able to respond, however, he continued with,"Have you began practicing for the next performance? It's in 3 days you know."
"No, not yet Master." Jason answered for me.
"Well, have you at least got a stage name?" The ringmaster asked. I nodded.
"We decided on Skybrine." I told him, and he nodded.
"I like it. Sounds mysterious. Now then," he said, clapping his hands together," Both of you, back to rehearsal! I want a full performance by the end of the night!" The ringmaster ordered. Jason stood ridged.
"Master, for him to join in the performance tonight would be disastrous. He knows no moves or times to go out or even his freaking abilities he can use. The circus would look like.. Like a joke." The ringmaster stopped in his tracks. Before you could say 'Circus', he had pulled back his hand back and smacked Jason on the cheek. Jason stumbled back from the impact, and I caught him just before he hit the floor. Jason blinked a few times, seeming a little dazed and confused as to what just happened.
"You will do as I say. Your in this circus for a reason, and I expect this circus to put on its best performance. Now go." He said pointing to the exit. I nodded, and helped to lead Jason out of the tent.
"Well, that could have gone better." Jason said, as I helped him sit on a haybale not far from the performance tent.
"That was pretty mean of him to do, you know. I should've thrown a punch or somethin-" Jason cut me off.
"You would've gotten something worse than me for attacking him. A slap isn't anything, honestly. Others have gotten worse." He muttered. I not knowing what to say, didn't respond. I lulled around for a few minutes, waiting for Jason to feel a little less dazed. Once I was given the ok, we walked back to the tent, awkwardness practically radiating around us.
"So, uh, what am I suppose to do in the performance?" I asked as we walked inside the performance tent. Jason shrugged.
"Perhaps you could watch us run through it first, and then we can add you in somehow." He offered, and I nodded. I wanted to see what they did, and see if I could get ideas for a routine.
"Hey guys, master wants a full show tonight, and that includes the newbie! Can we do a practice run so he can see how it's run here?" Mitch called out. Though everyone responded with groans, they all got into position. I moved myself onto one of the bleachers, and waited for the show to start.
Ian seemed to be the guy that started the show, hobbling out onto the floor with a few lucky blocks in his hand. He place all of them down, and began to break them. Out of the first one appeared a large confetti cannon, which he fired, causing confetti to go everywhere. When he opened the second box, he was met with the old pie-to-the-face trick, and his entire face was caking with pie. Wiping away the pie from his eyes, he broke the third box, and Seto appeared from it. He smiled to the crowd, and then, using his magic, he did some script magic, writing in the sky,
Welcome to Cirque De Hybrid!
Then that's when the performance began. Seto created a spot light focusing on Jason entering the arena, flying in the air, using his wither powers to fly through magical flaming hoops and doing tricks in the air. He flew off, and the spotlight was then directed to Mitch and Jerome doing a sword fight on a tightrope, which then quickly followed into a trapeze act. They swung on the trapeze bars effortlessly, and when Mitch dismounted, a few blaze rods were released from his body, which then exploded like fireworks.
The trapeze melted away into darkness as Quentin had appeared, doing some skillful tricks on silks that hung from the ceiling. That act was then followed by the ground turning to water, and Quentin doing some pretty impressive dives into the water from his silks. He climbed out of the water, and it cleared as a giant wall with a huge trampoline at the bottom appeared. Seto, Mitch, and Jason stood atop of the wall, smiling at an invisible crowd. Then, without warning, they let themselves fall off the top of the wall. I gasped at the sight, but quickly sighed in relief as the trampoline caught them and bounced them back up, allowing them to catch themselves on ledges built off of the wall, or do tricks like back flips. Mitch and Jerome looked like they were having the times of their lives on the trampolines, but Seto just looked bored. Seto bounced off the trampoline, and after a few more tricks, Mitch and Jerome followed, jumping off and doing a front flip in the air before landing.
A dark hazy fog then appeared to fall upon the inside of the tent, making it hard to see. I squinted through the fog, and managed to make out two little purple dots staring at me. A creepy sort of music began to play, and I suddenly heard the ferocious flap of wings, and the fog was cleared, revealing Ty. He was flapping his magnificent wings in the center of the arena, and began to fly around, dipping and barrel rolling. Below where he was flying, the rest of the guys were beginning their final act. They all started up their powers, and with a little help from Seto, they managed to form the Words Thank you for watching. As the final letter was spelled out, Ty landed right in front of it, and blasted a mighty roar.
The others then joined next to him, and they all took a bow. I clapped.
"Wow guys, that was amazing!" I said as they left the show area. Everyone seemed happy with the performance, besides Seto, who looked tired from the amount of Magic he had to use for the special effects and transitions.
"I'm gonna go lay down for a while guys. Call me if you need anything." Seto said, quickly waving off.
"Thanks bro! Now that you kinda see how it worked, where do you think we could put you?" Mitch asked. I scratched my chin, and then snapped my fingers.
"Ok, so you know Ty's part in the show? Well, it looked a lot like what Jason was doing with his wither powers, so maybe, me and him could do an airborne battle. We both have pretty strong magic, and I think the crowd would enjoy seeing that." I explained. Ty was listening, but I wasn't sure if he liked the idea of not. After a few moments of utter silence, he nodded.
"Ok Newbie. I think that could work. One condition though. Our magic can't be harmful, and if you could make it different colors, that would make it more entertaining." He said, and I nodded, smiling.
Mitch then began to explain the show and my entry, and we began practicing for the Ringmaster's preview show.
I didn't even realize how late it was until I noticed the Ringmaster entering the tent.
"Alrighty boys, is the show ready?" The ringmaster asked, and Ty nodded. "Good! Now, begin the show." The ringmaster said, seating himself in one of the bleachers.
"Hey Newbie, get Seto, would ya?" Ty called to me. Nodding, I quickly ran out of the tent and to the sleeping quarters. I stepped inside, expecting to see Seto sleeping on one of the cots placed inside, but he wasn't there. Frowning, I looked around back, but still no sign of him.
"Guys, Seto isn't in the sleeping quarters." I called into the tent.
"Did you look out back?" Jerome called out, sounding confused. I nodded.
"What's the problem here boys? I want my show." The ringmaster asked walking over. His arms were folded over his chest, and he didn't look happy.
"Well..uh...I can't find Seto." I said. The Ringmaster glared at me, and then ran off into his tent.
The others joined me as I stood still, not knowing what was happening.
"What is the Ringmaster doing?" I asked Quentin, who was standing closest to me.
"He's...he's checking his chip log." He whispered.
"Why's he checking the chip log?" I asked.
Ty walked up behind me. His snake-like eyes were filled with worry.
"He's making sure he hasn't ran." Just as Ty had said that, an angry scream erupted from the tent, and the Ringmaster stormed out, towards us. Ty quickly moved to the front of the group of Hybrids.
"Whatever you do, don't say anything, unless you want to lose your tongues."
I don't know if it was Ty's threat or the angry Ringmaster, but I decided to follow Ty's order and kept my mouth shut.
