Part 22

Y/n raced out of the room. She felt like she couldn't breathe, like her air was being sucked out. A few moments later, Pietro flew out of the doors as well. He slowed as he came closer to her and saw the tears in her eyes.

"It's not, it can't be, is it?" She just nodded slowly.

"Why didn't you tell me?" Y/n just shook her head.

"Nobody was meant to find out. Wanda read my mind and, and, and I can't be another burden on everyone. I can't be the girl who they tie the child leash and drag along because they made the mistake of talking to her once. I can't Pietro. I can't." He pulled her into a hug as she sobbed.

"I would never think of you like that. I am nothing but grateful that I met you." Y/n pulled away and shook her head.

"You have to say that, you're my boyfriend." Pietro's eyes widened.

"We.. are official?" Y/n knocked her head against his chest.

"This day really can't get worse." He laughed.

"No no no no no, I like that. I've been meaning to ask." She smiled, but still felt light on air. She took off her necklace and put it into her pocket.

"I need to go." Pietro grabbed her wrist.

"No, stay, you have to stay." She wiped some tears from her cheek.

"I can't be here. Stark will find me, he always does, so take that as you will. I just need some time." He hugged her and heard her whisper.

"I didn't want anyone to know. And now they do, they all do." She pulled back and smiled as he neatened her hair. She quickly teleported away, and it worked that time. A few moments later, Tony came through the door.

"Where is she?!" Pietro shrugged.

"You'll find her, you always do."

Y/n was sitting on the ground, staring at the gravestone in front of her. She heard the footsteps behind her and threw her necklace at him.

"Screw you."

"Thanks." She turned around and glared at him.

"A power dampener? Really? You still dont trust me." Tony looked at her as she turned back around.

"1. It was for your safety. You know what happen with the nightmare. It was awful to watch. You were hitting the ground again and again, you refused to leave the power dampening cage for hours. What if it happened again and you never left? What was I going to do?" She frowned.

"Leave me there." Tony scoffed.

"And 2. I wasn't the one being untrustworthy. You lied." Y/n shook her head.

"I never lied. I never said I could read." Stark rubbed his face.

"Well it was definitely something that should have been brought up. At some point. Would have been nice to know." Y/n smiled snarkily.

"Well, I guess now you know." He sighed and crouched down.

"Look, I know you didn't want to talk about it." Y/n looked at him.

"Great, now go suck a dick and leave me alone." Tony took a moment to readjust.

"Look, it doesn't matter if you're talking to me or not, you need to get on the jet to Vienna and sign your name on the Accords." She looked up at him with teary eyes.

"You really don't get it do you? I can't sign my name because I don't know how. I was going to get Wanda to teach me before we left, but then she told everyone. She told everyone my secret! It was meant to be mine to tell!" Tony nodded.

"I know."

"No! No you don't! I can't do anything! I'm stuck guessing half of my life, half of the world around me! I can't get a job if this fails, I had to beg that coffee shop to hire me! I don't have anyway to remember things apart from recordings and just trusting my head! Do you know how hard it is to trust a mind that can't do basic tasks? Of course you don't! No one here does!" Tony looked at her. She looked, crazy almost, swinging her arms around raising her voice, but she made sense.

"You could have asked for help. We could of helped. We still can." She looked up at him and shook her head.

"You, you, you just don't get it. I'm the unwanted mistake that holds everyone back. You can't have me around, not now that you know. If I had told you, right at the start, that I couldn't read, would you have let me be an Avenger?" She expected him to lie, to save her feelings and make her feel special. She was glad he didn't.

"No. I would have told Steve to leave you to the world, but now, now I know what you can do. I've seen you in action. You don't need Shakespeares sonnets to zap around and punch people. You don't need advanced chemistry to kick a bad guy, or shoot a gun. You don't need Jane Austin, you don't need Charles Dickens, or F. Scott Fitzgerald, or any other fancy schmuck. What you do need is a moral compass and some killer spirit." She smiled a little, but that was all he needed.

"How do I know, you know, that I'm doing the right thing. Signing the Accords, what if it splits us?" Tony looked at her.

"It will. I can almost guarantee it, and I'm always right. But, with the Accords people die, but it's less. It's the greater of two flawed goods. Now, I have a new dress for you in this jet, so let's see Vienna."

Y/n looked around, but there wasn't much to look at. The walls were bland concrete with a large logo printed on one wall. Rows of seats pointed their occupants to a currently empty table sitting near tall windows. She watched as Nat talked to T'Challa and T'Chaka, but quickly moved as a loudspeaker announcement commenced the meeting.

Y/n sat next to Nat in the front row of seats and watched as T'Chaka spoke about his confidence in the Accords. She turned her head as T'Challa started walking closer to the window. She began to lean over, catching the eye of Natasha in the process. Before she could whisper anything, T'Challa started sprinting and yelling.

"EVERYONE GET DOWN!!!"

Glass sprung everywhere as a large explosion erupted from the windows in front of them. The world seemed to go quiet as the explosion blasted through everyone's ears. Y/n leapt into action, scooping people up and teleporting them to safety. After a few rounds back and forth, she spotted T'Challa crouched on the floor, and after further inspection, she could see his father lying motionless. T'Challa brought him up to his chest, rocking him back and forth with tears spilling into his blood.

She was too late.

She tried getting people down, but the fire was growing, and the smoke was getting to her lungs. She teleported down for the final time, and just lied on the floor, her wheezing breaths filling the silence. Various people came over and thanked her for saving them, but all she could really do was give them a "cowabunga" hand as they walked by. Eventually, after what felt like years, she slowly sat up, and found herself to be on the floor a few metres away from T'Challa. She looked over to him as he gazed forward blankly.

"I'm sorry, you know, that your father died. You did everything right." He smiled and looked over to her, still on the floor.

"In my culture, death is not the end. It's more of a stepping-off point. You reach out with both hands and Bast and Sekmet, they lead you into the green veldt where you can run forever." Y/n smiled.

"That sounds, peaceful. And nice. It feels like it would be very free. I like your culture." T'Challa smiled and turned back to facing forward.

"My father thought so. I am not my father." He slid a ring onto his finger. It was only when she started speaking that Y/n realized that Natasha had been standing there for god knows how long.

"T'Challa, Task Force will decide who brings in Barnes." T'Challa clenched his fists and stood up before turning to Natasha.

"Don't bother Miss. Romanoff. I'll kill him myself." He walked off, leaving Y/n stunned on the floor.

"Woah, did not see that coming. You don't think he's actually going to kill him, right?" Before she could answer, Nat's phone began ringing. Y/n walked off, leaving Natasha to talk on the phone.

This was not good.
