Round 6 | Seven Scenes Challenge

A Death

Another fight. It's what it always comes down to. No one can know who we are, but they always do. They know everything about us, including me.

How can they know anything about me, though? I'm not like Danika or Sacha.

Now, it all makes sense.

Dathan Wood, the co-founder of one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies on the planet—and my boss—stood silently by the car. His dark hair is whipping around his perfectly angular face, the wind hellbent on tearing it from his head. Everything about him is as intoxicating as the day I met him.

I try to push the feelings down, down, down. Though, Sacha is already glancing at me.

"You were with him?" he whispers beside me.

I bow my head. My silence is answer enough. I can almost hear the roll of Sacha's eyes, as well as the questions this predicament generates. They are running in my head on constant replay.

On the other side of Sacha, our sister doesn't even glance at me. Her eyes are fixed on Dathan. Tendrils of darkness emanate from her fingers behind her back. She's ready for whatever will come next.

Standing at her side, Luke squeezes her other hand.

Words are empty. The villains have no use for them when they can let their actions speak louder. Dathan is certainly the villain here and that is exactly what he did.

A bolt of lightning flashed across the sky, the clouds gathering around us. Swirling in an uncontrollable ring, they slowly lowered whilst spinning towards where we stood.

"He's manipulating the weather," I mutter, turning to my brother. Could he help us defeat him?

Sacha huffs, throwing all his emotions in an invisible wave towards our attacker.

Dathan's smug smirk disappears and his face pales. He falls to the ground on his knees, shaking his head and flailing his hands in the air as he tries to dispel the invisible force taking hold of him.

Quickly, Danika and Luke use their powers in contingency—one moment the ground is steady, the next it rumbles and Danika uses it as her chance to throw a cloud towards him. The dark whirls slowly turns into an obsidian spear.

My heartbeat is slow, and everything around me moving in slow motion. The spear bounces off something invisible surrounding Dathan. The trajectory changes. I can't move quick enough as a scream erupts from my throat, the name lost on my lips. It goes through skin, bone, and organs until it reaches the other side of the body, the sharp end sticking out. Blood drips onto the ground, spilling over the fabric of their t-shirt.

Sacha lets out one last laugh, his fingers curling around the spear before his eyes close. He falls to the floor, the thud breaking through the noise in my head, the screaming.

Holding her up, Luke has his arms around Danika as she cries. I can feel her heart cracking as each sob wracks her body. Whatever link they had, it is gone. It died with him.

Something within me suddenly understands. I understand them better and myself. I lean down, touching Sacha's hand and I'm suddenly inside his head.
