Round 4 | Seven Scenes Challenge

Superhuman

"Imogen!" Danika screamed again, snapping me out of my thoughts.

It took me a moment to readjust myself to the broken restaurant. The liquid effect was gone from the memory. Everything was back to being cast in shadow and darkness.

Near the entrance, a man—a stranger—stood in front of the double doors. He squared off against Sacha who blocked his way any further into the room. Although, he still tried to look around the lanky frame of our brother to where I was lying on the floor with Danika towering above me.

"What's happening?" I asked in a whisper.

She didn't say anything as she waved for me to stand up. I chose not to argue with her.

"You're not welcome here," Sacha said between gritted teeth. "Leave!"

The stranger raised their hands in the air, the necklace around his neck catching the moonlight filtering through the room. He smiled. "Now, now. Let's not be too hasty."

I could hear the grinding of Danika's teeth before she yelled over, "He said leave, now go!"

He lowered one of his hands from the air slowly. I could see from this distance how tense Sacha's shoulders looked, whilst Danika's back straightened like an arrow as she showed off her full height. Both looked ready to fight.

Fingers curling, clouds of pitch-black smoke crawled around Danika's fingers. She took a step forward. It was enough of an instigation.

The man threw what looked like a bolt of lightning towards us. Danika narrowly missed the shot as Sacha raced towards us. He dodged each bounce of light that erupted from the man's fingers, as though he could predict where they were going to land. With every step our brother took, it felt like watching in slow motion. Even though he was by our sides within seconds, it was more of an age as we held our breaths.

Once Sacha was safely by our side, Danika threw a cloud of smoke that evolved into a sharp, obsidian spear at the man. He dodged it, running towards us. However, she didn't relent in her attack as she ran towards him. Obsidian spears shot from her hands, the clanging ringing in my ears.

For the last shot, she predicted where he would end up. It shot through his arm, piercing skin and bone. A howl of pain escaped his lips, ripping through his throat. The force of it propelled him to the side towards the wall. A clink against the wooden boards alerted us where the spear had gone.

Sacha sauntered over towards his twin, both dark and towering, even as they moved in on their prey. They were two animals, weighing their options.

With shaky legs, I followed behind them.

"What do you want?" Sacha snapped. His usually light and chipper voice which always had a hint of mischief was suddenly deeper and sharper around the edges. Those soft brown eyes zeroed in on the wiggling man as he struggled to get his arm free.

Beads fell down his head. "Come on. This isn't fair!" he whined, his voice straining as he reached for the spear.

Crimson droplets began to pool around his feet, the blood draining from his body. It felt like the safe house all over again, only I was awake for what was happening.

Acting bored, Danika picked at her nails. "Answer the damn question!" she ordered.

"No one," the man said desperately, his face scrunching up in pain again as he struggled.

Sacha rose an eyebrow. "Really? I remember you at the institute."

Danika's expression shifted. Her eyes narrowed on him; her lips pursed in calculative thought. Whatever she was planning to do next, I wasn't sure. However, my legs quaked as I relived the last few moments in my head.

None of this should be possible.

"Fine!" the man wailed, slumping.

Danika huffed. "He sent you, didn't he?"

He nodded, something in him giving up on getting himself free.

There was something I was missing here. It was a missing piece to a big puzzle and my older siblings weren't letting me have it. Why not? What were they keeping hidden away from me?

Without a second thought, a slice of metal rang in the air. It echoed through the room. I flinched away, turning around from the corpse that hung on the wall by the spear. A ringing began in my head as Sacha and Danika began arguing and yelling at one another. The ringing grew louder until there was nothing but silence.
