Chapter Fourteen: The Love Of A Father •EDITED•

"Dee, you've changed. You've actually become a decent performer."

When Dawn didn't reply her, the panic on Rhea Lee's face slowly crumbled away to reveal her usual indifferent disposition.

Pure calm danced in her eyes as she stared at her sister. "I didn't poison him, if that is what you were thinking."

Unconvinced, Dawn raised a brow, easing into her seat as she let a smile form her lips. "Prove it."

"In my left coat pocket is Corey's medicine case, you'll find that none of the vials are touched." Her sister answered without any difficulty, unperturbed by the situation she was knee deep in.

"And that proves what exactly?" Despite the disbelief that laced her words, Dawn knew why she had let her sister go. She knew that there was no threat that had an effect on the lady who loved the color of blood and for that reason alone decided to practice medicine.

The doctor did what she wanted when she wanted and those sort of people were the hardest to deal with.

"I see that you're calm now." Rhea Lee teased her younger sister, pointing to the blooming marks on her neck. The red stood out against her white skin.

"You really enjoy playing with your life, don't you?" Dawn smirked. Seeing those bruises made her feel satisfied even though deep down she knew that she was being played with.

Rhea Lee was more twisted than anyone she knew but being able to rattle her was worth the satisfaction that came after.

"Father didn't send me," the doctor finally said after a moment of silence. "I followed you to the North because you are the only sister I liked."

Funny, the professor scoffed in her mind. You are also the only sister that has ever tried to kill me.

"I trusted you with my. . ." Dawn started, but cut her sentence short and closed her eyes. "I trusted you with Corey's life and you have betrayed that trust."

When she received no reply she opened her eyes again only to see a vial hovering between them.

"I did no such thing," Rhea Lee smirked and waved her hand. The little test tube dance around in kind. "I'm tired of daddy's little games Dee, I'm switching to your side."

"I gave you a job, swore on my name that you were trustworthy and got you a place to stay. . . and you only decide to switch sides now?" Dawn could only stare at her sister.

"Don't you know who our father is?" The oldest in the room hummed and wagged her finger with enthusiasm. "He's mad rich."

"And also mad mad." Dawn added and grabbed the vial that spun freely in the air, weightless under the control of her sister's mental influence.

"True." Rhea Lee nodded in agreement and fiddled with the buttons on her lab coat. "Guess what he's doing now?"

"Planning the end of the world?" Dawn answered halfheartedly and snorted as she looked through the colorless liquid in the little glass bottle.

"You are so good at guessing!" Rhea Lee cooed at her younger sister. "By carrying out his plan to unify the world he might end up destroying it."

"What?" Dawn didn't actually expect to be correct. She looked away from the vial and glared at her sister. "Are you being serious?"

"Yes, darling sister. Why wouldn't I be?" Her sister laughed. "Is it surprising that after almost five centuries of peace father wants more?"

"And what about Corey?" Dawn asked again, a bad feeling she couldn't ignore rising in her chest.

"Well," Rhea Lee flashed a sheepish smile. "He wants you to marry him."

Dawn's thoughts paused. "Marry?"

"Father may have control over all the ministers, but Corey is a stickler for the rules, you know that. And everyone he puts into positions of power is just like him. The North is the only nation not swayed by bribes."

The solution Dawn had been looking for had finally presented itself, but not in the way she had expected. "I just have to marry him and he'll get the antidote?" she asked quietly.

"Oh, maybe? I stole it from Dad before he could give you that choice." Rhea Lee explained.

"It's right there in your hand." She pointed to the vial.

"What do you want, Lee?" Dawn asked again, unable to conceal her surprise. "You didn't poison Corey but you didn't give him the antidote either, what are you up to?"

"Dawn, it's not as simple as what I want," her sister said seriously. "What's going on with the minister really has nothing to do with the poison anymore, it's the fog."

"The fog?" Dawn echoed. Her fingers drummed against her thighs as she forced herself to focus. She tried to connect everything she knew to find the answer.

The fog had started three months ago. No phenomena could give a reason for it and it affected Corey alone. Why?

"It isn't natural," she came to a swift conclusion. "That much is obvious."

Rhea Lee nodded slowly. "And I think father is behind it."

"Blast him." Dawn rolled her eyes. It wasn't that hard to guess that their maniac of a father was behind all that was wrong in the world.

Rhea Lee was about to say something in reply when the light build above them spluttered off.

The moment the room was drenched in darkness, a watch revealed itself on Dawn's bare wrist, beeping and flashing persistently as her features twisted into a scowl. "We've got to go."

"What?" The wink of red light from Dawn's watch illuminated Rhea Lee's as she looked around curiously. "What's going on?"

"We're under attack." Dawn answered coldly, tapping a button on her multipurpose timepiece.

Her voice went degrees lower. "Our barriers have been breached, the bunker is taking up fog."

"Who's attacking?"

"Take a look." The professor flipped a miniscule switch on the watch and a holographic screen floated on top of her hand.

Rhea Lee lowered her head and squinted at the glass-like screen, frowning when a troop of armored men came into view. "It seems like daddy has decided to get rid of us."

Dawn threw her a pointed look. "Get rid of me, you mean."

"Ah yes." She corrected herself. "He'll probably throw me a party for keeping you occupied."

"So what are we going to do?" Rhea Lee continued.

Suddenly the light flared back on and Dawn shrugged, switching off the projection above her hand and attaching a cord from the monitor to a port in watch. "We are torching this place then stopping whatever our father is planning."

"Hell yeah!"

Dawn's face scrunched up when the words also repeated themselves in her head. "Was that really necessary?"

"Sorry." Rhea Lee smiled innocently. "It's not my fault that this is so exciting!"

"Exciting?" This was not the first time that Dawn had been skeptical about what went on in her sister's head. "Definitely. It's fun for you because you can just poof out of here whenever you want."

"Hey," the doctor said in a soothing tone. "I would never leave you behind, we are on the same team."

"Seriously?" Dawn shook her head in exasperation but ended the conversation there. "Let's just go."

Once she had finished backing up the files on her system, a portion of the floor opened up beneath them to reveal a sleek black convertible resting metres below where they stood.

Putting a space modifier in here wasn't such a bad idea after all, she thought happily. Although this was all that could fit in the small bunker even with modifications to it's space, it was still worth it-and it was tax money well spent.

Her sister stared at the vehicle in shock, her greed almost palpable. "That's yours?"

"Get in." The moment Dawn spoke, smoke rose from the monitor and it caught on fire.

"Looks like I finally have a reason to upgrade to that new holographic model," she mumbled to herself and jumped into the Auto.

Rhea Lee followed suit.

Right after they both landed in their seats, a toneless voice filtered through the underground bunker.

"Surrender now," it started. "We have you surrounded, failure to comply will result in immediate termination."

"So where are we going?" Rhea Lee screamed over the blaring sirens that had started just as Dawn flipped on the engine of her Auto, a blue light spreading from their seats until the whole car turned to the color of the sea.

"The capital." Dawn answered as though it was obvious, pulling her seat belt over her chest and strapping her legs in.

"We can't drive through solid rock!" Rhea Lee yelled again, hurriedly securing herself to her own seat as she looked at the layers of earth and steel surrounding them.

"Wait, can we?" she asked again, her eyes gleaming with energy.

"No." Dawn said simply as she pressed a button on her door and the roof folded back into its rightful place above their heads. "We aren't going to drive."

Immediately they were cocooned in the metal beast, all outside sounds were cut off. The engine hummed quietly while the steering wheel, speedometer and the entire dashboard flashed and vanished, a panel filled with buttons and screens replacing them instead.

"Is this a Soarer?" the doctor asked excitedly, referring to the brand of Auto that was designed to fly.

"No," Dawn answered patiently, her hand hovering over a big red button in the center of the panel. "It's a teleporter."

Before Rhea Lee could ask anymore questions Dawn's hand slammed down on the button, and they-along with the car-disappeared in a ball of blue light just as the roof of the bunker exploded and a giant robotic hand reached for it.

AN: Wow, this was cool. Teleporting cars... Who is up for that in the 26th century?

And what do you think of Rhea Lee, now?

Why do you think are they going to the capital, and is their father really behind the fog?

What about Dawn + Corey? ;) Do you think they'll get married in the end?
