Chapter Three: Why? What's Your Message?

Why are you writing what you are?

What is your message?

I think this is important to keep in mind. A story you're writing just to have fun is going to be very different from a story that has a specific message (though ideally you're writing AND having fun).

A story with a message is powerful. Think about your favorite stories: what were their messages? How did they affect you? People seem to forget fanfiction can do the same thing. I remember reading a fic that made me completely rethink how I saw growing up, and it really helped me get through tough times.

Think about what you want to tell people reading. That you should just enjoy the ride? That they shouldn't take everything so seriously? That maybe they need to take care of themselves better in order to take care of others?

When you write, think about what you want to tell people. Through your characters, plot, world. What are you telling people with this?

(This also helps you realize things you may be unintentionally saying, like if you're writing grimdark and accidentally telling your audience that all of humanity sucks)

Don't get me wrong: write what you want. But remember that when you post it, people see it. They may be in any kind of mood, of nearly any age. You may be touching people's hearts without ever realizing. Be mindful of what message you're putting out, and you may end up with a more specific vision and audience.  You then end up with a more specific "why".

So, ask yourself: why are you writing this? What am I telling the people who are reading this? And, perhaps, what does this say about me at this moment?

Maybe it's as simple as: I want to have fun, I'm telling people to just relax and enjoy the shitshow, and that I have extra time on my hands so I should have fun with it.

Or maybe it's deeper, like: I'm doing it to convey my own pain, I want to tell people that they don't need to go through it alone, and maybe I need to do some healing with people I love & trust.

Either way, a story with a consistent message becomes a stronger, more consistent story. And when you're stuck, it can help lead you towards new ideas.

This just randomly came to mind so I decided to write a chapter on it, hope it makes sense.

Have an amazin' day, evening, and night, g'bye-
