CHAPTER NINE

INT. BOX OFFICE – LATER

Luke sits behind the glass booth. A skater patron approaches the counter with his friend and takes out his wallet.

SKATER PATRON

Can I get two tickets for Replay Man.

LUKE

Are you sure about that?

Skater Patron stops digging in his wallet and looks up at him.

SKATER PATRON

What do you mean?

LUKE

Never mind. Not my business.

SKATER PATRON

Is it not good, or what?

LUKE

If by not good you mean the worst movie of our entire generation, then...could be.

Skater Patron reads the showtime board.

SKATER PATRON

Okay...So what's good?

Luke stares into the Skater Patron's eyes and surveys his appearance.

LUKE

Valley Rangers.

Skater Patron is skeptical.

LUKE (CONT'D)

The trailers may not do it justice, but you will be in for a pleasant surprise.

Skater Patron shrugs and hands him the cash.

SKATER PATRON

Whatever. Two for Valley Rangers.

Luke completes the transaction and hands over the tickets.

LUKE

Enjoy.

As Skater Patron and his friend walk away, Luke notices Trevor standing nearby liking what he sees. He takes notes on his clipboard and walks away. Luke is pleased with himself.

INT. CONCESSION STAND – LATER

Craig smiles behind the counter at a lady patron.

CRAIG

Hello, ma'am. How can I help you?

Trevor walks over, inspecting Craig from a distance.

LADY PATRON

How much is popcorn?

CRAIG

Small, medium or large.

LADY PATRON

All?

CRAIG

2.25, 3.50, and 4.75 respectively.

LADY PATRON

I'll take a large.

Craig inputs this information on the cash register.

CRAIG

Would you like a free large drink with the purchase of a hot dog?

LADY PATRON

Sure.

Craig calculates the total in his head.

CRAIG

That will be $13.25.

Lady Patron hands Craig the money and he finishes the transaction.

CRAIG (CONT'D)

I will be right back with your food.

He moves to the popcorn machine. Trevor joins him.

TREVOR

How did you do that? I still don't remember what's on the menu, and I've been working here for a year.

Craig scoops popcorn into a large bucket.

CRAIG

I have a photographic memory. I'm also really great with numbers.

TREVOR

Good to know.

Trevor scribbles notes on his clipboard and walks away. Craig fills the popcorn bucket with more jolly.

INT. TICKET TAKING LINE – LATER

Derek hangs back while Daisy takes all the ticket stubs.

DEREK

So what do you do for fun?

DAISY

This is fun.

Daisy rips off a stub and hands the ticket back to a patron.

DEREK

Working is fun for you?

DAISY

Come on. Free movies, discounted food. And I get to meet some really cool people.

Derek smirks. It quickly drops. One nostril lifts in alert and he sniffs the air. His eyes land on the kid patron next in line.

DEREK

You must play me for some kind of idiot.

Kid Patron looks around, confused.

KID PATRON

I'm sorry?

DEREK

You better be sorry.

Derek sniffs him making Kid Patron uncomfortable.

DEREK

Chocolate covered raisins, strawberry vines and (sniffs) melon cubes. Tropical flavored.

He points to the sign next to them. No Outside Food.

DEREK

Can't you read? No outside food inside the theater. Hand it over.

Kid Patron sucks his teeth and pulls out the stash of candy hiding in his clothes. He dumps them in Derek's hands. He starts to walk away, but Derek glares at him in warning. Kid Patron huffs and steps out of his shoe. He shakes out the last of his contraband and walks away.

DAISY

That was impressive.

Derek rips open the candy that was in Kid Patron's shoe.

DEREK

You have to abide by the law.

Across the room, Trevor gives him a thumbs up. Derek winks at him while spilling the candy into his mouth.

INT. FOYER – LATER

Craig, Derek, and Luke meet up with Trevor.

CRAIG

So have you come up with a decision yet?

TREVOR

Not yet. But I promise my uncle will choose one of you by the end of the day.

Trevor walks to his office. Derek groans.

DEREK

This is going nowhere.

LUKE

Let's rock-paper-scissors for it.

Luke bangs his fist on his palm.

CRAIG

No. We have to play by the rules. After our lunch break, let's just get back to work. (strategizing) Or I could work during the lunch break and do twice as much as you two.

He and Luke exchange looks. They rush back to work.

DEREK

I think it's about time to break a few rules.
