Chapter 23
"JACKSON! WAKE UP!" I heard a loud, deep voice yell to me, making me bolt up in the upright position. I was breathing heavily as I saw King Xavier standing over me.
"It's your mother.....she's awake..." he said, resulting me to widen my eyes in surprise. I pulled the blanket off of me and ran towards the door.
"Aren't you going to put some fresh clothes on?!" he shouted to me.
"What?! My mothers awake, I have to see her!" I said looking at him with great disbelief. "Okay, get in the jet, we'll leave in less than five minutes." he said calmly, unaffected by my glare.
I ran out the castle with fresh clothes, one thought running through my mind.
'Oh my fucking god.'

We landed around four thirty am back in my hometown.
Rushing through the doors, I asked where the room was and the nurse led me to it.
My heart was beating like a hummingbirds wings, my head was spinning, my legs were aching, I was sweating.
After all these years, she's awake.
When we got to the door, a man with a white doctor's coat and stethoscope walked out. His face blank.....expressionless.
"Are you Jackson?" he asked. I nodded absentmindedly, trying to calm my breathing.
"Your mother would like to see you." he said, still no emotion. He stepped aside.
I saw my father as he started towards the door, his eyes bloodshot red from crying. After he closed the door, I inhaled audibly before turning to look at my mother.
She was lying on the hospital bed with a weak smile. Her eyes were half-way opened.
"Jackson." her voice a faint whisper bringing tears to my eyes.
"M-mom." I said. After a moment, I began walking towards the side of the bed, my breath uneven.
"Jackson, I missed you." she said, bring her hand up to caress my cheek as I was sitting on the chair where my dad was seated.
I held her hand against my face. "I never left mom." a tear trailed down from my eye as I saw her pale skin, thin, dry lips. Looking half dead, it made tears fall even more.
"I know Jackson, I've always heard you, even in my sleep. You look so different now." she said, examining my face.
"I'm prince now mom, like you always wanted." I stated, giving her a small smile.
"Who told you that?" she asked, her small smile growing wider.
"Your sister." I said, feeling a little better as we had a light conversation.
"Well, she never knew how to keep a secret." she said, remembering her childhood.
"I'm gonna take you to the castle when you feel better, and you could live there." I said, like a kid thinking about what he would be in the future.
Her face turned into a frown, but then into a small, sorrowful smile. I've been getting a lot of those.
"I won't be able to go to the castle." she said, a tear falling.
"What do you mean? I'll let you recover, take as long as you need, no rush. I'll be waiting for you, I won't leave." I said, trying to persuade her.
"I-I.......I won't be able to recover either." she said, her voice breaking, tears trailing down her face.
I held her face, brushing off the tears with my thumb.
"W-what do you mean?" I asked, tears beginning to form again.
"In my condition, you can't recover." she said. I stared at her, figuring what she said, reading between the lines.
"I'm at my last breaths, Jackson." mother finished.
My breath hitched, I let out a gasp as I began to cry. "No, it can't be. It can't. No, mom. Don't do this to me." I pleaded, holding her hand, squeezing it lightly.
"I can't, sweetheart. I'm going to die."
And that was it. I let myself break down. I stood up, looking at her, seeing if she was lying, but her eyes showed truth.
I punched the walls.
"I've been waiting.." I punched,
"Waiting for years.." Punched it again.
"Talking to my sleeping mother.." I said, this time placing my head against the wall lightly, crying for two seconds before uttering...
"And now....she's gone."
I looked at her from where I stood.
"I love you son, don't forget that a mothers love goes on. I will always love you, no matter what. You have been the best thing that ever happened to me and I am grateful for that. I know I didn't have a long life, but the life I was awake for has been the greatest." she said.
Every word made my heart sink deeper and deeper, my throat hurt as I tried to swallow.
"Here." she said, taking off her locket that was placed on her neck. "I want you to have this. Keep it with you always, and you will always have me with you." she said, placing the locket in my hand and closing it into a fist.
I leaned in and kissed her forehead. "I will always love you too, mom." were the last words I said as her eyes closed and her hand that grasped mine loosened.
She's gone.......
