The Thing's a Man Does For Treasure

It was a humid and star-filled night on the Island of Dominica, the moon was big and bright as it hung in the sky. In short, Lord Roderick Damion couldn't have asked for better weather during his ball. Lord Damion was an upper class man and the leader of a bountiful sugar cane harvest, he traded with investors all over the world. The demand for the newly-discovered substance known as sugar was a high one and Lord Roderick would gladly supply it to the country that paid the highest. To celebrate his success and fortune in the business market, Lord Damion was holding a ball at his large mansion. He had invited nobleman, their lovely lady friends and businessmen of the highest standards. Only the best of rank and elite groups would attend this lavish party.

But, of course, Dominica was a small island and word spreads fast about elite social events, even among the lower members of society. Of course, many people in the lower classes wished to be invited, but none would make it passed the iron gates of Lord Damion's estate.

Except for one man...

One gentleman in a velvet dark blue suit looked like he belonged as far as wardrobe expectations went, but he still stood out from the rest of the upper class men. Whereas most of the men's face's were clean-shaven, this particular man had a black mustache, soul patch and a beard braided into two sections on his chin. On the top of his head was a mop of dark dreadlocks tied back into a thick ponytail-like fashion, of course the other men wore powdered wigs or combed back hair.

This man was, indeed, the rogue and infamous pirate Captain Jack Sparrow. But anyone who knew Jack knew he wasn't the type to spend a perfectly good moonlit evening rubbing elbows with bratty rich snobs like Lord Damion. In fact Jack's ideal evening involved a few pints of rum, some gambling and maybe a wench or two. His least favorite evening was this: sipping champagne with a bunch of judgmental aristocrat's who ranted on about who made the most money or who's daddy invested in which business venture. It was all quite sickeningly stupid to Captain Jack.

But Jack knew it had to be done, the host of this revolting party, Lord Roderick Damion, had all his saving and investing's in a safe somewhere. Every deed to his cargo ships, every piece of gold and silver and every gleaming jewel that Damion had ever earned or inherited was in a single safe. The very thought of all those riches, made Captain Sparrow salivate with greed. Mind you no one but Lord Roderick or a few of his closest colleagues knew where it was or the combination to it, but Jack was known for his quick tongue and constant, convincing lies. If anyone could pull off getting close to Lord Roderick and have him willingly tell the location and combination numbers to his loot-filled safe, it was Captain Jack Sparrow.

Jack had managed to use his highway-man skills to hijack a carriage belonging to John Donnerson. Donnerson was an upper class Merchant Captain who worked for Lord Roderick's company but never met him. This made him an easy identity to steal, since Donnerson never met Lord Roderick, his employer wouldn't be suspicious of Jack's appearance as him. Jack also managed to swipe the man's invitation to the ball before bashing him in the head with a coconut and throwing him in the ditch.

Jack arrived at the ball, but before he could enter the ballroom a large suspicious man asked for his invitation. The man was two heads taller than Jack and had grapefruit-sized muscle's on his arms. He was clearly there to throw out anyone trying to sneak into the ball. Jack gave him Donnerson's invitation and tried not to draw attention to himself.

The man looked at the invitation and his expression soften slightly. "Mr. Donnerson, is it?" He asked.

"Yes, it is" Jack said, trying to make his voice sound posh and not as nervous.

The man nodded politely. "Terribly sorry, sir" he said "Please enjoy yourself."

Jack was a little shocked at the man's sudden politeness, but continued into the ballroom.

That Donnerson lad must have been more high up in the ranks than I imagined Jack thought to himself.

Jack looked around in slight awe at the ballroom, he couldn't remember the last time he had been in such a high class household. He didn't think he'd ever been a household this high class. Despite the way he acted like a nobleman on the outside, inside he felt very out of place. Jack was used to dark, creaky wooden ships, being surrounded by rats and sunburnt men waiting to die of scurvy. Now here he was in a house with polished marble floors, the scent of tropical flowers and finely-dressed people dancing in a waltz. And the only thing that looked remotely like a rat was a small fluffy white dog one woman was holding.

Then Lord Roderick Damion walked in, he was about twenty years older than Jack, and wore a pale cream colored suit. He made his way over to Jack, eyeing him with curiosity.

"Mr. Donnerson, I presume?" he greeted Jack.

"Indeed" Jack nodded.

He held out his hand "At last we finally meet."

Jack shook it firmly. "Yes, after all these years" Jack told him, making his voice sound even more deeper and fancier.

"Years?" Lord Damion asked "But you've only worked for me for several months?"

Jack mentally scolded himself, but he came up with a quick lie to cover his mistake.

"Of course" he said "but when you're a merchant captain, time seems so long at sea."

"I'm sure it must" Lord Roderick said. "I must say I've never seen a Merchant Captain with such a... rugged appearance."

Jack was more scared of being found out, than hurt by the nobleman's words.

He cleared his throat and stroked his mustache and beard. "Yes, well... I'm growing it out..." he said "I heard facial hair is all the rage in London."

"Really?" Lord Damion asked "I must take a trip to the city of London one of these days. Well, I have more guests to greet, but please enjoy the party."

"Of course, thank you" Jack said. He couldn't believe his own ears, did he really just thank a Lord? Did Captain Jack Sparrow just give thanks to a nobleman?

This bloody party and wretchedly uncomfortable suit was getting to him. If he could only find out the code and location to that safe, he'd ditch this party and it's frolicking fancy pants guests. Perhaps he could sneak away and try to find Lord Damion's office, if Damion was going to write down the location of combination to his safe, it would be in his office.

When Jack felt he wouldn't be missed her slipped out of the ballroom and into a nearby hallway.

His eyes widened as he looked down the hallway. There must have been at least ten doors in this hallway alone! It would take him all night to find Damion's office and there was still the rest of the mansion to search.

Jack groaned "The thing's a man does for Treasure" he mumbled to himself.

He began checking all the rooms, one was a music room, the other was a drawing room. There was also a small foyer and a portrait gallery. But nothing that looked remotely like the office of a entitled rich snob like Lord Damion. Jack walked up a small flight of stairs to the second floor and began searching the room's up there. He found a library and a linen closet, but still no office!

Captain Jack sighed to himself. He was getting nowhere and, aside from all that, he was dying of heat in the heavy velvet suit he was wearing. He tried to at least take off the hanker-tie around his neck, but the bloody stupid thing wouldn't budge.

He tugged at it trying to pry it from his neck, but ended up tripping over a fold in the hall carpet.

The undercover pirate went sprawling into a nearby room. He groaned and rubbed his aching head, which he had landed on.

He looked around the room her fell into, it was- without a doubt -the frillest room he had ever been in. Everything that surrounded him was pink, lacy and made of silk.

But one thing that caught Captain Jack's immediate attention was the lovely young woman in the sky blue ballgown. She stared at him with wide and fearful eyes her rose bud lips parted in a gaping way.

Jack gave her a weak smile. "Oh... is this not the ballroom...?" He asked her.
