SC: Back in Time
* * * * *
Let's all go back to the time when our beloved Park Chanyeol and Byun Baekhyun are younger but aren't any less in love. When life was easier and smoother. When Baekhyun was Chanyeol's newly wedded husband and him, his.
When the feelings are fresh and light... but aren't any less deep.
When the words are old... but aren't any less true.
Let's all go back to that day before the sunset...against the white sand and crystal blue waters...
Byun Baekhyun stayed under the tub, the bubbles reaching his lower lip. He pursed them close until he can't breathe normally again and he'll part them, letting out a gush of nervous air and shaky breath. He clutched his hands together against his bare stomach. The water is starting to turn cold but he can't pull himself up.
His breathing started to turn faster until his chest hurts. His heart is hurting his rib cage, like it's begging to be released. His hands traveled to his chest and he slowly pats it, muttering words of assurance mostly to himself.
He intertwined his fingers. Then he felt the ring.
Baekhyun slowly lifted his hand that's been hidden under the water for some time now. He stared at the ring Park Chanyeol gave him, into the gems engraved around it and into the meaning it has.
He wants this. He dreams for this day.
He loves him.
Byun Baekhyun ran his finger over the silver as a slow smile started to appear on his pretty lips. He closed his eyes and tried to imagine Park Chanyeol, waiting for him at the end of the aisle. Baekhyun felt himself shaking... but not in fright. Not in nervousness.
Park Chanyeol fixed his tie for the tenth time in a minute. He gazed around the beach as another wave of fresh hair hit his face, making him squint and touch his perfectly done hair. Almost immediately, his mother came running to him, grinning and trying to reach for his face.
"Your hair!" Mrs. Park exclaimed as she examined her only son under her spectacles. "Come on! Let me fix it!"
Chanyeol chuckled but stooped down, letting his mother trail her fingers along the edges and flatten loose strands with her wrinkled palm. And just when Chanyeol's about to pull away, he heard stifled sniffs and that's when he realized that his mother is shaking.
"Mom..." Chanyeol breathed as he pulled back, studying his mother. She's old but beautiful and the wrinkles around her eyes tell you the million times she smiled at everyone. She has a big heart and there's so much love left to spare. "Mom, you're ruining your make up."
Mrs. Park let out a half-giggle and a half-sob. "I'm s-sorry, dear." she sobbed, wiping her tears with an expensive hanky. "I j-just can't believe y-you're getting married now."
Chanyeol chuckled as he put one arm around his mother. "I thought the groom's parents don't cry?" he kids and his mother threw him a glare.
"Well, if that's the case, you're making Baekhyun into a bride then." His mother sniffs. "That's not fair."
The taller let out a loud laugh. "I'm guessing Baekhyun would be... pleased." he smirks as he leaned down, kissing Mrs. Park's hair. "Don't worry Mom. I'll always be here for you and Dad."
Mrs. Park's fragile hands reached out for Chanyeol's cheek, brushing it with her thumb. "I know, darling." she whispered as she finally let out a sigh. "Be happy. Please be happy."
"I will." Chanyeol whispered. Still with his mother so close to him, the giant felt a frantic poke on his back. He turned and was surprised to see Do Kyungsoo, one of Baekhyun's bestfriends, looking at him with worry.
"Chanyeol," Kyungsoo whispered, throwing Mrs. Park a cautious look.
Mrs. Park glanced at his son, and as if understanding what the matter is, she slowly excused herself, saying that she'll go and entertain other visitors. It's still three hours before the wedding but Park Chanyeol decided on arriving the earliest at the venue.
Kyungsoo pulled Chanyeol by the arm. "I don't think..." then he shook his head. "He's..."
"Don't tell me he's running away." Chanyeol breathed, eyes wide. No. He can't take that. Baekhyun won't do that to him. He can't run away and leave him.
"No." Kyungsoo choked. "He won't step out of the bathroom!"
Nervousness washed through Chanyeol like a pail of icy water splashed through his face, making him numb. "What?" he gasped, grabbing Kyungsoo's arm. "Take me to him."
"I don't think he'll---"
"Just take me to him, Kyungsoo!" Chanyeol hissed, worry all over his pretty face. Now he doesn't care about the breeze anymore and how it damages his hair. All he thinks about now is his future husband inside the bathroom with a large tub where he could basically drown himself.
Is Baekhyun having second thoughts about this wedding?
His "Yes" had felt so real to him.
Chanyeol squeezed Kyungsoo's arm. "Please." he breathed. "Take me to him."
Kyungsoo studied Chanyeol's face before nodding, both dashing out of the venue, kicking white sands on their wake. The sun is still up and away from the horizon, bright and hot. The wedding will start at sunset and everyone wishes they'll make it up in time.
The designers, make up artists and photographers crowded the whole of Baekhyun's room. They're all standing in front of the bathroom door, knocking and calling. Chanyeol didn't expect his mother to call so many people to fix Baek. He didn't expect this kind of crowd, noisy and too much alive.
Now he doesn't wonder why Baekhyun hides himself inside.
His Baekhyun doesn't like crowded places, especially when they're all looking at him. It makes him nervous.
"Give way! Give way!" Kyungsoo called as he practically shoved everyone aside. "The groom's coming!"
Chanyeol walked towards the door, but before he said anything else, he requested everyone to step out of the room first. He doesn't want Baekhyun seeing a crowd the first thing he stepped out of the bathroom.
Everyone obeyed, muttering to themselves words Chanyeol can't understand. As the door of the room closes, Chanyeol sighed, eyeing the thick wooden door of the bathroom in front of him. He tried the knob. It's locked. He tried knocking thrice. No answer.
"Baek..." he called in a quite voice as he placed his ear over the door, trying to hear what's going on inside. He could hear the faucet and the angry flow of water from it. It made his heart skip a beat.
Chanyeol knocks louder. "Baek." he called. "It's Chanyeol. Please open this door."
At once, he heard a muffled voice. And it's trembling.
"T-there's so many p-people out there." Baekhyun called between heavy breaths. "I-i can't--"
"They're gone, Baek." Chanyeol sighed, relieved to hear Baekhyun's voice once again. He didn't drown himself. Chanyeol said in his head. Stop your horrible thoughts, Park!
Chanyeol heard the faucet stop. "Really?" Baekhyun called and Chanyeol can say he's now directly on the opposite side of the door. He felt his hand tighten around the knob.
"I could never lie to you." Chanyeol whispered.
He heard a click and the door swung open slowly.
"Yeol..." Baekhyun breathed as he stepped out of the bathroom, still in his robe. His hair is wet and his bangs clings to his forehead in a mess. When he saw Chanyeol, he immediately stepped into his arms, sobbing as he felt all the nervousness seep out of his body.
Chanyeol caught him by the waist, sighing in pure relief. "What were you thinking?" he whispered against Baekhyun's wet but absolutely fragrant hair. "You made me worry like hell, do you know that?"
Baekhyun sniffed and hugged Chanyeol tighter. The giant didn't expect Baek to need him this much and somehow, that made his heart flutter more than a few times. He started to run his hand over Baekhyun's back and the smaller immediately let out a sigh.
"I'm sorry." Baekhyun breathed against Chanyeol's now-damp wedding suit. "I'm really sorry, Chanyeol."
The giant kissed Baekhyun's hair gently. "Don't be sorry." he whispered. "It's not your fault."
Baekhyun slowly lifted his head, eyeing Chanyeol's chest and the wet patches he made on his white suit. "Oh." he breathed, eyes turning wider. He reached for the suit and started running his hand over the dampness as if he could dry them up with friction.
Chanyeol caught his hand, stopping it. "It's fine." he said with a small smile. "You should let them fix you, Baek. The wedding's about to start in a few."
Baekhyun bit his lower lip as he slowly lifted his gaze into Chanyeol's piercing eyes. His husband-to-be looks undeniably perfect, from his dark, slicked hair to the perfect fix of his jaw. He's not wearing any make up on, just his natural skin that is flushing pink as he looked back at him.
The giant reached for the Baekhyun's undone bangs, guiding them back over his head and flattening them. "Why were you hiding from them?" he asked gently. He's not mad nor he is annoyed. In fact, how could even get irritated with this gorgeous creature he's holding in his arms right now? Byun Baekhyun might have suffered long years under the manipulating power of his stepmother but he's just simply... beautiful.
Chanyeol traced Baekhyun's eyebrow down to his blushing cheeks and plump lips. Even his skin is perfectly white and flawless. His hand that he's been holding a while ago feels like feather against his calloused one.
"I'm nervous." Baekhyun whispered. "I didn't expect a crowd, Chanyeol."
Chanyeol chuckled and he stooped low enough so he could brush his nose against Baekhyun's playfully. "And you weren't even hesitant as you sang during the ball." he teased as he pulled Baekhyun closer.
"I was forced to do that!" Baekhyun hissed, shoving Chanyeol away gently. And then his eyes turned softer, looking down. "I'm really nervous." he gave a small smile. "And excited."
"50% nervous and 50% excited?" Chanyeol asked, eyeing Baekhyun with a smirk.
Baekhyun giggled. "80% nervous." he muttered and Chanyeol's face fell.
But then he wrapped his arms around Chanyeol's neck and pulled him closer, kissing him fast on the lips. "Honestly now," he whispered, their lips inches apart. "10% nervous."
Chanyeol grinned as he rested his forehead against Baek's. "Well I'm 110% in love with you." he muttered and somehow, that line lowered 10% to 2%. Baekhyun laughed once again and Chanyeol felt the urge to kiss him. So he did.
"Do you still feel like trapping yourself in there?" Chanyeol asked, gesturing towards the bathroom with his head.
Baekhyun laughed and it's shaky. "Will you leave?" he asked in a surprisingly low voice.
"I have to." he whispered, lips still forming that smile Baekhyun love the most.
The smurf reached for Chanyeol's face, tracing his lips with his thumb as if he's afraid of letting him go. Chanyeol held Baekhyun's hand and guided it to his lips.
"I'll be waiting for you at the end of the aisle." he whispered and somehow, Baekhyun can't help but re-imagine that scene in his head.
2% went down to zero.
Imagine the perfect wedding song.
Or your dream wedding song if ever.
People often wonder what brides do feel as they walk down the aisle, clutching a heavy bouquet of rose that smells like a hundred perfumes in one. Do they even feel the softness of the carpet under their shoes? Or the curious and dreamy gazes the audience throw at them?
Do they even recognize the people's faces? Do they even see the world as others do?
Baekhyun's answer is no.
His beautiful eyes are glued to that one person at the end of the aisle, waiting for him with a smile he would love to kiss away. He's not wearing any gown or stilettos. Not even a bouquet in his hand. Aunt Petunya is guiding him with an equally large smile on her face.
It's almost inappropriate to call him "Byun Baekhyun" now. The "Byun" part is almost over.
Our Baekhyun sees the world through a narrow cylinder, focusing only to what his heart screams. He doesn't feel anything but the pounding of his heart and the threatening tears resting on the tips of his eyes. He's afraid to blink knowing it will send them flowing.
He failed to noticed everything but Chanyeol. He failed to see anyone but his Park Chanyeol.
He squeezed Aunt Petunya's hand that's resting on his arm and she squeezed back.
"Be happy." Aunt Petunya whispered. "You deserve to be."
Baekhyun glanced at her and that's a wrong move because when he did, the first teardrop fell and everything else followed. He bit his lips, fighting off a grin. Even as they reached the end, Baekhyun continued sobbing softly.
"Hey." Chanyeol whispered as he took his hand, guiding him in front. "It's not yet over, Baby."
Baekhyun tried to glare at him but failed. "Don't tease." he hissed under his breath.
Chanyeol pursed his lips. "Okay." he grinned. "I won't."
The priest held out his hands, gesturing to the whole crowd. The place is all white. Everyone is in simple white clothes that mimic the serenity and the simplicity of the whole occasion. Chanyeol and Baekhyun wanted this. Not glamorous. But real.
The long carpet where Baekhyun just marched a while ago is almost hard to distinguish against the white sands of the beach. The refreshing wind continued to wash over the people, carrying the relaxing sound of the waves nearby. Small spotlights lined the ground, producing enough light for everyone to see everything. The sun is almost setting, casting rays of orange to red.
The priest cleared his throat, giving the couple in front of him a large, welcoming smile.
"Chanyeol and Baekhyun, today you choose each other before your family and friends, to begin your life together. For all the tomorrows that follow, you will choose each other over and again, in the privacy of your hearts. Let your love and friendship guide you, as you learn and grow together. Experience the wonders of the world, even as patience and wisdom calm the restless nature. Through your partnership, triumph over the challenges in your path. Through the comfort of loving arms, may you always find a safe place to call home."
Chanyeol glanced at Baekhyun and noticed that he's not wearing any make up but lip gloss. He frowned and one thought crossed his mind: Damn. I'm just marrying the most gorgeous man on earth.
The priest reached down for a small book, then started reading from it as he looked down at Chanyeol through his thick glasses.
"Do you, Park Chanyeol, accept Byun Baekhyun, as your life's mate and one true love, promising to share in all that life offers and suffers, to be there for him in times of need, to soothe him in times of pain, and to support him in all endeavors, big and small."
Chanyeol smiled, reaching down for Baekhyun's hand. He gave him one long look before returning his gaze to the priest. "I do."
The priest turned to the smaller and Baekhyun tensed. Chanyeol squeezed his hand, comforting. "Do you, Byun Baekhyun, take Park Chanyeol, to be your partner in life and sharing your path; equal in love, a mirror for your true self, promising to honor and cherish, through good times and bad, until death do you part?"
Baekhyun glanced at Chanyeol and he smiled brightly at him, too bright that the giant has to keep himself from basically throwing himself at him. Baekhyun is just too adorable to contain.
"I do." came Baekhyun's breathless answer.
Soon enough, a little boy, son of Chanyeol's other friend came walking towards the front, carrying a small white pillow with two rings attached to them. He stood beside the couple and Baekhyun can't help but pinch his cheek lightly. The gesture made the boy grin.
Chanyeol took the ring from the pillow and held Baekhyun's hand. But instead of slipping the ring into his finger right away, he guided Baekhyun's hand into his lips and kissed each of his fingers gently. He closed his eyes and when he looked at Baekhyun, tears rolled from them. Baekhyun smiled as he reached for Chanyeol's face, wiping the tears away.
"I'm sorry for not finding you right away." Chanyeol whispered, placing Baekhyun's hand on chest, over his beating heart. "I'm sorry for letting you suffer in hiding just because you're afraid to lose me. I'm sorry if I wasn't there during the times you cried, during the times I could have protected you. But Baekhyun, from this day and for the days to come, I promise to be there. Always. I promise to be the one to wipe your tears away and I promise to be the one to hum you to sleep. I love you, Baek, and this is the love that I would take no matter how many deaths I'll die. And Thank you," he added. "Thank you for saying 'Yes', thank you for every kiss and hug. Thank you for being my everything, Byun Baekhyun. I regret none."
Chanyeol held Baekhyun's hand, slowly guiding the ring into his finger. "I give you this ring as a symbol of my love and faithfulness. As I place it on your finger, I commit my heart and soul to you. I ask you to wear this ring as a reminder of the vows we have spoken today, our wedding day."
Baekhyun clenched his fingers as he felt the ring. He held Chanyeol's face in his hands as he sobbed between laughs. He's just so happy that his heart can't contain it anymore.
He slowly reached for the ring and for his groom's hand.
"Park Chanyeol," he started between sniffs. "I'm sorry, too, for hiding. I'm sorry for causing you what you don't deserve. But I love you. I love you and I know it'll be enough to keep me alive. You're my life, Yeol. You are everything in me and more. You are the most perfect, most beautiful person I have ever known and meeting you inside that third grade classroom is one of the happiest days of my life. Thank you for noticing me." Baekhyun said and Chanyeol grinned. "But most of all, thank you. Thank you for who you are. You don't know how much that means."
He slowly slipped the ring into Chanyeol's calloused and long finger. "I have for you this ring which symbolizes that your love is the most precious element in my life. The ring has no beginning and no ending, which symbolizes that the love between us will never cease. I place it on your finger as a visible sign of the vows which have made us what we are from this day forward."
Chanyeol smiled as another soldier of tears came rolling down his face. He held Baekhyun's face in his hands. "I love you," he whispered so only Baekhyun could hear.
Baekhyun grinned but it came out as a sob. "I love you, too."
The priest, with his contagious smile and lively eyes, held up his hands to everyone. "Ladies and gentlemen, I now present to you our newly wedded couple, Park Chanyeol and Baekhyun. Congratulations!"
The place erupted with cheers and applause, with cries of joy and laughter.
The wedding was simple. The tradition of candle lighting, veil and cord was dropped. Those were not needed according to the couple, for something more important does exists deep within their souls that only each other could reach and feel.
And without waiting for the priest to give the command, Park Chanyeol kissed Park Baekhyun.
"Byun" is totally unnecessary.
