Just beat it.....beat it......beat it.......beat it.
The speakers rumbled inside the commodious Tata Nexon SUV, reverberating thunderously under the sleek finish roof of the luxurious made in india car.
"Will you lower down the sound or should I smash the speakers!!!!" an above 50 man cried, all worked up. Two youthful lads, one perched upon the driver's seat while the other on the passenger seat, huffed and lowered down the sound. Micheal Jackson was now feebly heard unlike before when he was practically moon walking on their heads.
"That's the problem in travelling with oldies!!!!" grumbled the lad on the driver's seat. Now, couple of things to remember, the guys were alike for the most part meaning they were identical twins. The only discrepancy arising was in the form of their statures, one was well toned while the other was slightly chubby.
"Ofcourse when that oldie is your father!!!!! Thankless block heads!!!!" the adult man spat vehemently and the lads rolled their eyes.
"Papa are we there yet!!!!" a timid voice rose from beside him, looking down he found his beautiful 17 year old daughter looking up at him with her small round eyes brimming with innocence and exhaustion caused by this tedious journey. He smiled and wrapped his arm around her.
"Just a little more my heart, besides we are already in the Nilgiris!!!! C'mon, see all these mighty mountains and these vast stretches of meadows!!!!! Aren't they beautiful????" he said trying to cheer her up. She snuggled into her father's chest and peeked through the window at the majestic downs rolling outside as the car sped off.
"Maahi, do you know we are going to live in a very special place!!!! It's a town lorded over by the mafias!!!!" the guy on the driver's seat said bluntly and was slapped on the head after that by his twin. Her eyes widened. Although she didn't exactly know what mafias were but she knew that much that they weren't pleasant people. They enjoyed breaching the laws and forcing ruckus into an otherwise serene community.
"Kush you better zip it up....... maahi, it's nothing dear. He's just all bonkers, you know how he is right!!!! Maahi, there are bad people in every part of this world, we had some in our previous town, remember!!!! You just need to stay at least 10 feet away from them, that's it." the guy on the passenger seat, called luv, explained her softly. Maahi nodded tentatively. Her eyelids were already growing heavy and she just wanted to sleep.
"Well I think the kids must be hungry by now. Let's stop near a food point!!!! Besides kush has been driving for so long, he must be tired!!! A little rest would do us good!!!!" a woman in her late 40s said. She sat beside Maahi.
"That's a good idea!!! I see this burger King banner round the corner, let's speed up already!!!!" proposed luv looking through the windshield at the iridiscent banner of burger King.
Maahi sat on the trunk of the car, beside the pavement. The wind drifted softly across the thick green meadows, rustling the foliage of the tall Nilgiri trees generating an eerie hum which hung over the desolate roads of the mountains. The undulating forms of great mountains rose steeply across the entire yercaud, fencing in the town with its ginormous elevation. Once or twice a shiver ran down her spine as the sun was retreating and the evening freeze was insidiously clawing its way around the yercaud. The chilly wind played with the loosened locks of her hairs which had slipped out of her careless braid, hanging down from her left shoulder. They were already in yercaud but their destination lay a few kilometres off yercaud. It was a town called Vanasthali, not so much popular due to awful reasons which she didn't know about.
"It doesn't take so much time to make a burger!!!!!" her father grumbled. Like every father around the globe, he too disliked fast foods and relied mostly on home made food. But obviously you won't get home cooked food on the edges of the sinuous roads of the mountains. Suddenly, deafening music blared from behind them along with it the cacophony of harsh rumble of heavy engine. A jeep sped past them, swirling the withered leaves in the eddies of air, and throwing off a tornado of mud from under the heavy tyres. Her parents hardly resisted themselves from falling headlong on the muddy road. Maahi inquisitively looked at the jeep, it was a modified open wily jeep, costing no less than 50 lakhs in Indian currency. It was painted dangerously black and on the rear was a symbol of 'Om' painted thickly in saffron. On the driver's seat sat a brawny guy, at least that's what he appeared from the back, and along with him sat four other blokes who cackled monstrously. She also caught a whiff of liquor when the car ran past her.
"Huh!!!!! Brats!!!!! Maahi, dear......you see these morons, you need to stay clear of them!!!! Tykes like these are a burden to mother earth!!!!" her father told her disgruntled. She nodded casually. Her brothers came in the meantime with a paper bag in each of their hand.
"Wow!!!! Did you see that jeep.......man that was something!!!!!" kush was fangirling over the unwonted jeep, much to his father's dislike.
"Oh shut up!!!!! Jeeps like these are the playthings of spoiled rich brats. I hate these jeeps and jeep riders!!!!! C'mon now, let's start eating!!!" her father grumbled and her brothers huffed.
After an hour of driving unflaggingly, they finally made it to their new hometown. The Vanasthali. It was beautiful, with rippling mountains and far stretching meadows complemented with gigantic edifices and Bohemian streetlights, maahi was kinda starting to like it. The houses weren't crammed into congested space because the town was vast but people were less. For some reason people don't want to live in mountains but bustling metropolises like Mumbai, Delhi etc etc. Anyways, they finally found their house, oh by the way, this house wasn't rented but their own for her father had sold off all their unused land and bought this house with that money. The house was situated in a small colony lorded over by the trees which hung upon the roofs of practically every house in the colony. The greenery over here was awe inspiring and because they had arrived here in night, the beauty was just on its vertex. There is something so unique and calming in the nights of mountain towns specially when it's illuminated subtly by street lights. The neighbours, at the first glance, looked spying but they welcomed them graciously so maahi was comfortable with that. Her father asked her to go in as she was already too exhausted and she could meet with the neighbours tomorrow. She acquiesced and went in. The house was nice and comfy because listen, bungalow or a thatched hut, there's nothing like your own house. She probed the house excitedly, looking inside every room just to see which she should occupy. The house had four bedrooms, enough for her family, although her brothers sleep in one room yet one extra room is always a blessing to have. Downstairs was a moderate kitchen, in the tiny hall was a dining table and the bathrooms were seperate for every room. She ran upstairs and finally found the room which matched her liking. None in her house had issues with her having that room. She tossed her bags on the floor, jumped on the bed and succumbed to a deep sleep, ignoring her brawling brothers downstairs.
They all met again during the dinner time and after a quick short puja in the small temple which they had already made in the spare room, they hoped in to eat. The dinner consisted of mainly shop bought food for they all were so tired after arranging things inside the house that no one had the energy to cook. They had shahi paneer, mixed veg, fried rice, flat breads and rasgullas in dessert, and also ice cream which kush bought specially for her. First dinner in the new house should be a special one after all. The ate silently, well not exactly.
"Maahi, take a little more. You aren't eating properly!!!!" her mother said. Maahi shook her head.
"I'm already full after that burger and fries. I can't eat much mom!!!" she whispered playing her spoon inside the tender paneer. Her mother huffed.
"Maahi dear, it's gonna be your first day of college tomorrow!!!! Are you excited!!!!!" asked her father politely. She nodded nervously. More than excited she was scared because all through her school she had studied among girls and in college there would be boys whom she was scared to death. Her friends had told him that boys have a very nasty temper and they don't think twice before pummeling anybody. Her father sensed her reluctance. He drank some water and started.
"My heart, everybody is nervous before going to college, trust me I was death scared of my first day in college. But with time, everything just gets so easy and joyful. Besides, nobody can keep themselves from being your friend. You are a good girl and everyone loves good girls!!!!" her father tried to cheer her up. She smiled.
"Ofcourse maahi, look I am gonna be with you in the college. Just don't worry, everything's gonna be ok. But yeah, you gonna stay clear of boys ok. I don't want you getting any friendlier to the boys in the college because trust me my dear, this town ain't normal and we don't want you getting involved with any of the morons out here. Am I clear!!!!!" luv stated firmly. She nodded timidly. He smiled.
"You are actually threatening her luv. What's so wrong in being friends with a guy, c'mon. I have tons of girl friends. You need to calm down angry young man. Maahi, hey, you don't need to get scared of them. If you want, you can talk to boys, it's completely fine." Kush said coolly. Mr. Khandelwal and Luv, both stared at kush blankly. Kush rolled his eyes.
"It's ok. I don't like boys, they're scary!!!!" she said softly and no one was more happier than her father and elder brother.
"You should. Boys are devils. You should stay away from them." claimed her father. Her mother sighed.
"Dear perhaps you are forgetting that you too are a male. Stop scaring her like that you two. Maahi, finish your dinner and run upstairs, get under the covers and sleep. You have to wake up at sharp 7 in the morning." her mother said with a graceful smile playing on her lips. She nodded.
Maahi was all set to hop into her bed. She had already prepared her bag for the morning, choosed her clothes and ironed them. However, before falling asleep she just wanted to have the feel of the cool night breeze upon her face. She moved towards the window, heaved it up, the chilly wind whacked itself upon her beautiful face. Her undid hairs flailed as the wind swooshed through them. Suddenly, in the front of her house where there was a narrow road leading to the bunch of houses beyond, she saw a group of man assaulting a boy. They kicked and punched the boy as the latter wailed for mercy. A shiver ran down her spine as she stood arrested by the horrendous scene playing under the dark in front of her. A little beyond the assualters, sat a tall guy on the bonet of some car, concealed under the utter darkness of the starless night, he drank time to time from a slender neck bottle and perhaps enjoyed the drama. She couldn't see no longer. She closed the window, pulled down the blinds and ran to the bed. Under the covers too she couldn't help but think about the man who was sitting on the bonnet and relishing the assualt of that poor boy.
