The worst days are always birthdays

Jade's POV
It's my birthday today. I've always hated my birthday. When I tell people this, they're like "Why? There's cake and presents." My answer is quite simple really. When I was a kid, my parents always forgot my birthday. I'd wake up and they'd be gone for work. No note, no birthday card, not even a phone call. So I'd get ready for school hoping everyone else would forget my birthday too so that I'd be convinced that it was normal for people not to care. And everyone would forget my birthday except for my best friend, Primrose, who always used to get me, and still does, one of those cheap cupcakes with the frosting that is so disgustingly unhealthy that it's somehow delicious and has that food colouring that is made with many chemicals to the point where your tongue ends up blue after you eat it. I'd put the cupcake in my bag and as soon as I got home I'd sit on a chair that was on the further end of our long dinner table. I'd light one of those little birthday cake candles, which grew shorter every year, put it on my cupcake and made a wish. That wish was the same for years. "Please, may my parents remember my birthday next year?" And they never did. I'd blow out the candle, take it off the cupcake, eat the frosting only and throw away the rest. Well anyway, as I said, my birthday is today. On a Monday! How lucky. I got ready and waited for Prim to knock on my door with that cheap ass cupcake. Then I remembered how now everyone knows my birthday even though I tried to hide it so I've gotta deal with everyone wishing me a happy birthday. "Jade!!!" Screamed Primrose through the door. "Open this damn door right now."
"Yes Mam" I answered whilst laughing.
She put her arms around me and exclaimed "My little baby is growing up so fast, eighteen already, it feels like it was only yesterday that you stole my purple crayon and ate it."
"I'm not your baby. I'm older than you." I said whilst laughing and taking a bite out of my apple.
"Details don't matter." Primrose said and stuck out her tongue.
"You're such a child. Anyway, I was thinking we should ditch school." I suggested as we walked out my door.
"I can't Jade. You know my parents will kill me if I don't get into Harvard..."
"And I don't want to disappoint them, yeah I know the story. Sorry I forgot you have parents who actually care about you." I interrupted.
She made a face that pitied me and said "Your parents do love you..."
Once again I interrupted and said "Cut the crap, they couldn't care less about me even if they tried."
"Let's go, we're going to be late." Prim said and we got into our limo and left for school.
