' and if I only could,
I'd make a deal with God
and I'd get him swap our places '
It had been weeks since Sirius Black broke into the castle. Walburga was wishing to sue the school, Rose and Draco returned to their usual bickering, and Gryffindor got a new portrait. A terrible egotistical knight who seemed extremely off his rocker, scaring the first years to death with his theatrics.
In Professor Lupin's class, defense against the dark arts, Rose sat next to Goyle with her head barely staying up. Theo was in the same condition, slumped over with his face in a palm behind them and next to Blaise.
The full moon was last night, meaning Whitman was in the hospital wing. Not only that, Rose and Theo had spent all night outside the steel door of the basement Dumbledore let them use for his transformations.
Transformations were always difficult for Whitman with obvious reasons, but his friends too. Rose, Draco, Theo, and Blaise were the only to know of his condition.
Draco and Theo usually took turns helping Rose with him on the full moon. They consistently attempted to convince her to let them handle it so she could rest but she could never agree without threatening to stab them at the absurd idea. Whitman might've been the most level headed one and could definitely take care of himself, but Rose never let him go through a full moon without her since they were ten.
She felt a sense of duty to Whitman, even with Walburga and Orion who was once alive, it felt like it was only them.
Whitman's lycanthropy started at the age of nine when Fenir Greyback was at the Rosier manor, bringing the grandparents a dark artifact he found amongst the wolves. It happened on the night of a full moon and Greyback left late after a long discussion. As he exited the house he spotted Whitman swinging by the manors lake and in the most disgusting way, Greyback bit him.
It was known fact that Fenir Greyback targeted children.
Whitman's family blamed him, claiming he shouldn't have been out so late and tortured him physically, mentally over 'ruining' their family line.
He still blamed himself despite others telling him different and he did feel like a failure, a disgusting beast no one knew of.
But the Rosier's were wrong.
They should have never had a werewolf known for attacking children at their manor.
It only took two full moons until Whitman was shunned from his family, only being spoken when they wished to yell or bash him mercilessly. His friends tried to help in anyway but they were only nine too and keeping his secret like their life depended on it.
At the age of eleven Whitman began staying at Grimmauld place on full moons, Orion had been informed of his condition by Rose before they told Walburga who held such prejudice but nevertheless brushed it off as a out of sight out of mind thing and took her 'relaxing pills' to act blind on the nights it happened. He would use the deep and grungy basement there, Theo and Draco would come and sit outside of it with Rose. They held eachother when hearing his yells and screams, all they had was one another.
It was awfully painful to know someone you loved was cursed turning into something they hated for their rest of their lives.
There wasn't a single thing anyone could do about it either, not even the darkest or most powerful forms of magic could change his fate.
Whitman Rosier had been condemned for eternity from the age of nine.
Upon turning twelve his friends realized there was potion called Wolfsbane, one that could help him keep his conscious mind while in werewolf form. It was a exceedingly expensive potion, but they all came from wealthy families who didn't pay attention to their children.
It was easy to get the money.
Then at the age of thirteen Whitman left the Rosier manor to live with Rose, gaining full support from Orion and Walburga only agreeing for the sake of continuing the Rosier line. And that's how Walburga Black decided to smear the Rosier family name, pushing them out of the sacred twenty eight to keep from anyone ever finding out the truth of Whitman.
Draco began brewing the potion at the age of fourteen, he had taught Rose and they started to take turns brewing the concoction. Both were well intelligent in the art of potion making, and needed to be-if the potion was made incorrectly it had ghastly consequences.
Every full moon Whitman garnered new scratches all over his body, and they were all still there. But Rose had used her alchemy abilities to take on the project of altering Dittany, a powerful healing herb and restorative. It had taken years for her to get it right in some form and finally cover his scars which were impossible to get rid of because scratches from werewolf claws did not heal.
Midway through the past summer she had finished and given it to him. But it didn't work as planned, acting as a cover up and concealing the scars underneath without actually getting rid of them. So every two days he had to put more on or they'd peek through and needless to say everyone at school or memebers of the sacred twenty eight were shocked to the scarred boy untouched suddenly.
The excuse made behind his marks were simple, he had invested too deeply into a dark artifact that caused permant damage. But he knew and Rose did too that they couldn't keep doing this even if it had only been less than a few months. The potion was strong, almost too strong and harmed his body more and more each time it wore off.
No one needed to know the truth about his condition, he was still Whitman-nothing could ever change that.
Yes he was a werewolf, but he was also the nicest and most self-sacrificing person you would ever met.
Rose is pulled out of her thoughts as a paper bird lands on her desk. She followed the direction of which it came, finding Draco and Crabbe to her left.
She rolled her eyes, grabbing the bird from the air and crumbling it up before chunking it at the blondes head who only smirked in return.
Infront of her, Harry sat with empty chair next to himself, leaning back on the heel of his seat to speak to Rose.
"Where's Hermione?"
Rose shrugged and looked over at the table next to Harry where Ron sat, "Ron! Where's Mione?"
"Why you asking me? I'm not her keeper!"
She gave him a fake smile with a middle finger before leaning back into her seat.
Draco piped in with elbows leaned on the table, "Yeah Weasley-fuck you"
Rose turned her head to Draco, flipping him off as well with that same sarcastic smile-only getting another infuriating smirk back.
Harry scoffed, "Why don't you mind your own business Malfoy?"
Draco raised a offended eyebrow at Harry, "Anything that has to do with dear Rosie is my business"
Harry narrowed his eyes, "Nothing to do with her is your business like you pretend it is"
She threw her head onto the table with a groan that made Goyle jump, "Will you both shut up? I did not sleep last night"
Draco and Harry share a glare but keep their mouths shut as Rose lifts herself up and gives Goyle a pleading look.
"Want me to fake you being sick so you can leave?" Goyle asked sympathetically.
Rose went to wave him off but the high rise windows were all suddenly being shut, one after the other. Snape began marching to the front of the room, his cape bellowing behind as he stopped and pulled down a white film sheet from the ceiling.
Blaise leaned out of his seat, whispering to Rose. "Oh doesn't he seem so happy today?"
She only grunted in response, unable to laugh as usual from the feeling that falling asleep with her eyes open was a nearing possibility.
Snape whipped around to the students, drawling in his monotone voice. "Turn to page three hundred and ninety four"
The professor began to walk in between the isles of desks, but Rose was incapable of noticing as she began to fall asleep with her head in a palm.
In an instantly her textbook flew open, Snape's hand smacking down inciting a jump out of her.
"Tired are we, Miss Black?"
She shot him a lazy grin, "Never Professor"
Snape rolled his eyes and flicked his wand, a projector with a stand rolling from the back of the room and to him before he used magic to settle it behind her desk.
Rose sat up straight the best she could, attempting to give her all to not falling asleep as Harry spoke up, "Excuse me sir, but where is Professor Lupin?"
Snape marched back to Harry, pausing to glare at Rose sitting up with eyes closed. His hand slammed down onto the table once more, making her jump back with narrowed eyes of annoyance.
He glared back before speaking with a menacing tone to Harry, "What you should be worrying about is the person you copy all your work from has gained the inability to keep her eyes open. It is none of your concern where he is Potter"
Rose smirked lazily, "I'm wide awake thank you very much"
Snape dramatically waved her off before continuing, "Suffice it to say your Professor finds himself incapable of teaching at the present time"
"Werewolves?!" Ron screeched as he looked down into his textbook with the large picture of a werewolf.
Rose tensed, glancing over at Draco and then Theo and Blaise-all sharing a look as if they had just been splashed in the face with water.
With her time-turner, Hermione appeared beside Ron from thin air. "But sir! We've only just began learning about red caps and hinkypunks"
"Quite silly girl!" Snape scolded.
Hermione huffed, turning to the front as Snape began to walk in that direction.
"Now who can tell me the difference between a animagus and a werewolf?"
Rose wished to put her hand up but found it impossible from the exhaustion, Hermione full of energy shoots up a hand without hesitation though.
"No one?" Snape drawls, refusing to call on Hermione. "How....disappointing"
Rose scoffed loudly, the way he treated Hermione was ridiculous considering she was third in class, just below Rose and Draco. One would think it would garner the Gryffindor some respect.
"Please sir, an animagus is a wizard who elects to turn into an animal. A werewolf has no choice in the matter" Hermione took a deep breath, "Furthermore, with each full moon he transforms and no longer remember who he is, he'd kill his best friend if he crossed his path. They respond only to the call of their own kind"
Draco kicked his foot out, nudging Rose's leg as he lets out a howl. She glanced over with an eye roll, concealing her smile.
Stupid, hot, ignorant asshole.
"Thank you....Mister Malfoy" Snape paused before turning to Hermione, "That is the second time you have spoken out of turn Miss Granger. Are you incapable of restraining yourself or do you take pride in being a insufferable know-it-all?"
Hermione flushed red with embarrassment before Ron spoke with a nudge to her shoulder, "He's not wrong? You know?"
I change my mind, he's the cunt.
Rose stood up so abruptly Goyle had to reach out and keep her steady, "I happen to find Miss Grangers IQ level astounding. Just as I find it extremely funny-" her gaze turned unto Ron, "That people with such low intelligence as Ron would ever speak down upon her knowledge and wit"
"Oh do you really?" Ron scoffed, glaring right back at her.
Rose placed her hands on the desk, leaning over Goyle. "Oh-I really do"
"Sit down Miss Black!" Snape yelled.
Rose straightened up, placing her hand on Goyle's shoulder. "Actually Professor, I'm just making sure no one else has anything to say about Hermione"
Hermione kept her head down, trying to hide her reddened cheeks as she mumbled. "Just sit down Rose"
The Black nodded and sat, Snape rushing to her desk with a scowl.
"Detention....Saturday"
Rose smiled up sarcastically with a mocking tone, "Gladly....Professor"
"Ten points from Gryffindor and five from Slytherin! For Miss Granger's inability to keep her mouth shut and Miss Black's constant need for attention!"
Class resumed normal quickly, Rose side eyeing Hermione to be met with girl smiling gratefully.
' Thank you ' Hermione mouthed.
Rose shrugged casually, she wouldn't ever let someone speak down to Hermione in a million years.
Snape went on with such a monotonous tone that Rose had been lulled to sleep on Goyle's shoulder, not waking up until he was shaking her gently.
Her eyes fluttered open slowly before leaning up, giving him a grateful smile as she patted his shoulder with zero effort.
"Go get some rest Rose, I'll tell Mcgonagall you don't feel well"
Rose stood up with a yawn and patted his head, "And that, Goyle, is why you are my favorite"
Goyle smiled goofily, his face tinting as he nodded back at Blaise. "Theo needs to be woken up too it looks like"
Rose looked behind them to find a sleeping Theo and a timid Blaise attempting to poke him awake. She couldn't blame Blaise, Theo was an asshole to wake up.
Well, he was an asshole in general.
Except to Rose, he was the sun to her.
'Help me' Blaise mouthed.
She walked up behind Theo's chair, yanking it out from under the desk-his head falling off the table.
Blaise eyes went wide as Rose simply chuckled, finding amusement as Theo whipped around.
"Why don't you just fucking-" He stopped upon the realization Rose was the culprit, her arms crossing and eyebrows raising-urging him to go on.
Theo grunted, standing up and throwing his bag over his shoulder as Rose questioned him.
"What was that Teddy?"
He's gave her a lazy look instead of words, slipping his arm around her shoulders with eyes more dead than usual. Rose glanced back at Blaise as Theo guided them out, finding him smiling in relief.
They made their way to the hospital wing, both trying to lean on each other for support and neither spoke, too tired for any conversation.
When Rose and Theo arrived, Madam Pomprey rushed them to the bed in the very back with curtains drawn. "He just woke up, been asking for you both"
Pomprey took a deep breath before opening up the curtains to a heart breaking sight, Whitman sat up against pillows with bandages all over his body and a big gash across his face.
Whitman gave them his best grin, full of pain. "There's my people"
Rose was too distracted to notice Draco sitting by Whitman's bed. Her head turned to Pomprey, "Thanks for taking care of him Poppy"
The mediwitch didn't bother to correct her from exhaustion of staying up and tending to him, "Let me know if you all need anything. I'll be in my office"
Rose nodded, Pomprey quickly turning to leave as the Black lifted up the hand not around Theo's waist, making the bed in Whitman's side fly against it.
"Gonna lay you down, okay Teddy?"
Theo murmured a 'mhm' and let Rose guide him to the spare bed. She untangled their limbs before pushing him onto the mattress and tucking his exhausted body in.
Rose pushed his hair back after while looking over, finally seeing Draco watching her. She cleared her throat before speaking, "He let me sleep some on him last night so he's in worst condition"
"You should sleep too" Whitman suggested with guilt.
Rose gave him a stern look and started rounding around the two beds, not lifting a hand as she made the two curtains wrap around them all mindlessly. "I altered the potion again but I need to sit before I use it on you because I feel feverish"
Whitman's face lit up as she stood by him and Draco, "I'm so lucky to have a future alchemist as my best friend"
She shook her head at him before lifting a hand once more, summoning a chair and dragging it beside Draco.
Whitman smile grew as he looked at Draco, "Did she just do that like it was nothing?!"
Draco smirked proudly, "We have a future Merlin on our hands it seems"
Rose dropped beside Draco with narrowed eyes, "Did you just compliment me? And how did you get here so quickly?"
His smirk dropped, realizing what he had said. "I actually slept last night and left class when it ended unlike you and Theo. Too busy sleeping on idotic Goyle"
"Jealous Malfoy?" She spoke lazily while sliding her skirt up and pulling the dagger out of its garter-putting the skirt back down after.
Draco stared at where the dagger had just been pulled from before clearing his throat.
"You wish Black" He scoffed.
Whitman watched them in amusement while Theo rustled around in the bed next to him, already fast asleep.
"Okay so let's try this amped up version of dittany" Whitman murmured, clearly still in pain.
Draco looked at Rose confused, leading her to explain as she pulled the golden potion out of her robes and placed it in his hand.
"I altered the the already altered version we started using over summer. Hopefully it will cover up the scars immediately and in a more intense way"
Draco failed to hide his amazement as he swished the shimmering potion around, making her grin.
"I'm going to test it again before I put it on your face. It's been bottled up for a few days so I just want to make sure because if it hurts you I'll never forgive myself"
"How are you-" Draco stopped his sentence as Rose dragged the dagger through her left palm, Whitman immediately turning away in horror.
The fact she showed no signs of pain as she pulled the blade out of her skin worried Draco further. Rose flipped the blade around so the handle was sandwiched between her fingers as she grabbed the potion out of a frozen Draco's hand with blood flowing everywhere.
Whitman suddenly spoke with his eyes still screwed shut, refusing to watch such heinous actions. "Are you done yet?"
Rose rolled her eyes, "Yes...now open your eyes so you can watch"
Whitman peaked one eye open before opening both with a breath of relief to see she truly finished and was beginning to pull the cork out of the potion with her teeth.
"Since the dagger is a dark object infused with dark magic-if it covers up the scar immediately it should work" Rose said before pouring the golden liquid into her bleeding palm.
As soon as it hit her skin the wound began to close up. She continued to pour it all the way to the end of the gash, watching as the scar and blood disappeared without a trace that her skin had ever been touched.
As she put the stopper back on the potion, Rose looked up to find a cheerful Whitman and Draco with eyebrows raised.
"Salazar" Draco breathed out, barely above a whisper.
"That was amazing Ro" Whitman said, the happiest she had ever seen him after a full moon.
She tossed the potion on the bed, putting a hand over the bloodied dagger and mumbling "Scourgify" before lifting up her skirt slightly-placing it back in the garter.
"It's going to hurt at first, I didn't have time to try to fix that part"
Whitman nodded in understanding, "Just do it, I won't be able to explain my scars returning"
Rose picked the potion back up, uncorking it. "Draco, you need to hold his hand. It's going to be painful-epecially because it's his face"
Draco nodded and grabbed Whitman's hand without hesitation as Rose weaved her fingers through the latter's hair, slowly pouring the golden liquid over his gash from the top of his forehead to his chin diagonally.
He began to jerk in pain but Rose kept her grip tight while gazing down at him solemnly, if she could-Rose would take all of his pain and feel it instead.
Every. Single. Bit.
Every. Single. Time.
Draco and Rose let out synchronized breaths of relief, both releasing their grip on Whitman.
"Could've squeezed a little tighter Whit, you didn't break enough bones" Draco said sarcastically.
Rose laughed without meaning to, makimg Whitman fake glare at her before smiling again with a lifted chin. "How do I look?"
She ran her finger along his now untraceable scar, "Like a Ken doll"
"What the hell is a 'Ken Doll'?" Draco furrowed his brows in confusion as Whitman did the same.
"That's what I'm saying Draco...What are you even on about?"
Rose dropped back down into her chair with a grin, "I forgot I'm talking to two purebloods" her eyes rolled, "You both need a muggle-born in your life, Hermione has educated me on all things muggle"
Whitman and Draco have very different reactions, Draco looks offended at the idea of even being friends with a muggle-born and Whitman shrugs.
"The only muggle I care for are the ones in my hands" Whitman said.
Draco narrowed his eyes, "I'd much rather die than be friends with a mudblood and you would do well to remember you're a pureblood too"
Rose hit him with full force on the head, "Don't say that word to me! And I might be a pureblood but I am well informed on muggle culture, thank you very much!"
She huffed but before she could continue on Whitman quickly changed the topic, not wanting to hear them debate about the girl Rose was ready to go to war for.
"Where have you been doing your experiments at this year? You haven't been keeping us informed like usual"
Rose leaned back into her chair, kicking her feet up on the bed with delight to not discuss Draco's awful views. "I've been using the fourth floor girls bathroom. Peeves keeps lookout for me when I do so no teachers or students come in and it's not my fault you all try to stop me from blowing myself up"
Draco shakes his head, "I don't understand how that bloody thing does whatever you tell him to, he's a nuisance to society"
Whitman mumbled quietly, "Here we go"
Her head snapped to the blonde, "He has a name! And he is not a thing, he is a poltergeist! I happen to enjoy his company for your information!"
Rose saw Draco trying not to laugh as he looked at Whitman, she slowly turned her head to realize the latter was mouthing her words. Using her foot on the bed, she kicked the side of Whitman's leg.
"Ouch! What was that for?!"
"You mouthing my words like you know me oh so well"
"How am I to blame for you always getting upset when someone talks about Peeves and you say the same sentence every single time in defense of him!"
"I'll be sure to tell Peeves how you and Draco feel about him"
Both their eyes go wide before shouting in unison, "No!"
Rose smirked, reaching into her bag and pulling out a copy of Witches Weekly. "That's exactly what I thought! Now leave me and Peeves bond alone!"
They both start to mumble under their breathe but stop as soon as she lifted her head up from the magazine. Rose smiled in contentment and focused back on the thin pages, reading about Celestina Warbecks new lover of the week.
