41 - Lewis

Lewis didn't expect that Soledad, the woman he was admiring from afar, has died in one of her missions.

He was expecting that Soledad will come back easily with the data she has gathered in order for them to decide whether they need to kill or they just need to contain those prospective werewolves.

When he has heard the loud ringing tone of the distress signal, his heart went racing. In fact, it is totally the final thing that he was needed to know.

He was never used of hearing a distress signal since he was doing his best to do his job. Hindi niya hinahayaan si Soledad na mawalan ng resources, as much as possible he was giving her the safest route whenever Soledad needed something.

When Soledad was in her first mission, Lewis did his best as her communication to headquarters. She was enjoying the trip and even if the mission was hard, Soledad made it look easy for Lewis to control.

Mabilis umintindi ng instructions si Soledad. With some simple commands, alam na agad ni Soledad ang kaniyang gagawin. One thing that Lewis hated from her is the fact that Soledad does not care about his feelings.

He was not that totally obvious but he was giving her hints of what he wants her to feel. Knowing Soledad as one of Seruma's top arbitrator, it would be a complete joke if she would not be able to get his hints and understand them.

Pero matapos ang nangyari nang gabing iyon, Lewis has found no reason to continue anymore. Soledad wasn't there to tell him what happened, all he can see on his computer is the tiny little red dot turning on and off in one of the infrastructure located in the town of Wichita.

And having done his research, Lewis knew already what's happening in Wichita. He has gathered some reports and sightings about supernatural events that happened in that certain place yet their organization was not prepared to submit an order to know the reason behind all of it.

She must have encountered one of those entities that have brought chaos in that little town. It's totally too much for gathering data for werewolves DNA. But who's complaining now?

Several hours has passed when he pressed the reinforcement button, the organization has declared Soledad's mission as a failure. They ordered for a team of five exterminators to exterminate those supernatural beings who might have cost one of their arbitrator's life.

Seruma has ordered for those werewolves to be annihilated as well, they will not leave any trace of them being alive as now they had finally witnessed that they could kill innocent person.

The arbitrator will be treated as innocent as they were only there to gather data and not  harm others unless they were forced to do so.

And knowing that Soledad is now long gone, hours later and chaos will ensue in that cursed little town.

While preparing for the annihilation order, Lewis was sitting inside his unit, looking so distraught. He couldn't believe things will end up like this, he can't believe Soledad was already dead.

"She was a wasted opportunity. A wasted asset of Seruma," a deep voice from a man happened to grab Lewis's attention.

He looked behind him and found one of the head managers of the arbitration team looking back at him. "Mr. Del Pilar," Lewis whispered under his breath.

Mr. Del Pilar, on his early thirties, walked inside the unit and found a place to lean on his back. He gently poke one of Lewis computer units and checked if there's dust on it.

"Hindi ko akalain na ito ang huling mission na gagampanan ni Soledad," Mr. Del Pilar looked over his finger, wala siyang nakitang alikabok sa kaniyang daliri.

He smiled, Lewis knows more about maintaining the cleanliness of their unit over the pressure of their work.

"Kahit ako rin ho, hindi makapaniwala."

Mr. Del Pilar's face went serious afterward. "If you can't believe what happened, then please do tell me why it happened?"

Lewis eyes went bigger knowing that he also has failed his job when the arbitrator he is supervising has died as well. "H-hindi ko ho alam kung anong nangyari. Wala hong sinasabi si Soledad sa akin tungkol sa anumang problema."

"You might have known this will happen. Have you checked her vitals from time to time? Have you been recording the footage of her surroundings? Please tell me who she was talking to before she died," Mr. Del Pilar crossed his arms, looking straight at Lewis.

Lewis was about to check his computer when he realized that nothing was returned to him hours before the unfortunate event has happened.

Mr. Del Pilar shook his head and heaved a sigh of relief. "There must be something wrong that happened. What do you think it is?"

"A-according ho sa research na ginawa ko sa bayan ng Wichita. May mga sightings ho ro'n ng mga halimaw na umaatake ng mga dayuhan. Some says that it was only some wild creatures, pero ayon sa mga komento ng mga naka-encounter nito, hindi daw iyon isang uri ng mga hayop, kung di ng isang halimaw na hindi nila maipaliwanag kung ano at saan nagmula," ang paliwanag ni Lewis base sa kaniyang naaalala sa ginawa niyang research.

Mr. Del Pilar pondered for a moment. "If that is the case, I will have this mission briefly paused. I will not end this case for now, ipapagawa ko muna ito sa iba nating arbitrator."

"Paano ho kami?"

Mr. Del Pilar shook his head. "There's nothing for us to do for now. Both of you has failed this mission and you'll undergo training for what happened. Baka may mga bagay ka nang kailangang ayusin sa skills mo. Arbitrators needed to be regularly trained and I seldom force one of them to go training once again," tumayo nang tuwid si Mr. Del Pilar at handa na siyang lisanin ang unit ni Lewis. "We will send reinforcement to continue the annihilation order, but we will submit a new order to hunt those creature in that town."

Lewis didn't say anything.

"For now, you need to finalize all of the data you and Soledad has gathered and once you're done, submit them to the archiver department. Sila na ang bahalang mag-revise ng reports ninyo," Mr. Del Pilar walked into the door. "Magpahinga ka na muna, Lewis. I know this is not entirely your fault, but we can't pin this to Soledad alone by herself. You are partners for a reason and we couldn't just blame one for what happened. Anuman ang nangyari kay Soledad, alam kong maitatama pa natin ito."

Mr. Del Pilar didn't wait for Lewis to react as he closed the door behind him and left Lewis alone by himself as he contemplates on what will be his future in this organization filled with secrets.

He then hears the ringing of the signal that the annihilation team was now ordered to go.

And along those loud beeping, a certain ring erupted from one of his computer speakers.

In front of his eyes, he was seeing the red dot has become green again.

Soledad is alive according to his tracker.

He immediately stood up to call Mr. Del Pilar, they must need to stop the reinforcement as Soledad is still alive after all. The annihilation order was no longer needed.

"Mr. Del Pilar! Buhay si Soledad!"

He screamed, and shouted, trying his best to defeat the loudness of the ringing from the speakers around the area, but nobody knows yet if Mr. Del Pilar has heard his plea.

Meanwhile the exterminators are now prepared to kill, and anyone from Seruma knows that mercy was not included in their team's vocabulary.
