seven. can I talk to you? I really wanna know you
Artist: Jodeci
Song: Come and Talk To Me
Calum ignored Ashton all the way to back to the car. He didn't want him to kill his state of nirvana. The boy was still flying in cloud nine with the thoughts of what occurred a few minutes back when he had Blu in his prescence.
"Are you seriously going to act like you can't hear me?!" Ashton called out, furrowing his brows as he struggled to keep up with Calum's fast-walking booted feet.
The brown boy rolls his eyes and continues his silent treatment until they reached the car. He turned on his heel, bringing Ashton to an abrupt stop, almost bumping into the boy.
"Are you serious right now, bro?" Calum asks, in complete disbelief that his friend would even threaten to tell his not-so-really girlfriend.
What ever happened to the bro-code?
Which didn't really apply to this situation because he didn't really have a girlfriend; Cecilia was not his girl, although she carried on like she was, sometimes.
Ashton furrowed his brows as if Calum had grown three heads, wondering why the boy was acting so defensive when, in his eyes, he was wrong.
"Um, yeah I am. I mean, I'm not gonna rat you out--"
"Good." Calum interrupted, shrugging as he quickly climbed in the driver's seat, leaving Ashton outside and puzzled.
He scrambled to get in when the engine revved, giving Calum a look before pulling his seatbelt over his body.
"Dude, yeah, but you can't just--just do this." Ashton carried on, watching as the boy pulled out the parking lot of the school, becoming a picture in the rear view mirror.
Calum jerked his head back, slightly offended by his words. "Do what? I'm not doing anything."
"Don't play dumb, Cal. It's clear you're into Blu." Ashton sighed, rolling his eyes as he glanced at the boy.
"This is my second time seeing her, dude. I was just being friendly." Calum argued, though it was a weak response.
Ashton choked out a chuckle then shook his head at the brown boy. "Oh, yeah you were being quite friendly back there, mate." He replied in a mocking tone.
He knew Calum was flat out lying, he was clearly digging Blu.
The boy haven't seen his friend smile that much since he made the starting line-up for the soccer team and then captain of that very team.
Other than that, he's only seen him like that around that girl.
That worried him for two reasons.
One, he didn't really know Blu, yet he's acting like Calum's ready to ask the girl's hand in marriage.
And two, he kind of already had someone, Cecilia.
So, in Ashton's eyes, his friend was caught up in a web of cheating and it certainly wasn't a good look.
Silence took over the car as the two failed to figure out something to say.
For Calum, it's because he was caught dead in his tracks but at the same time, he didn't want to have this conversation with Ashton, at least not now.
Not when he was still on a high from his conversation with Blu.
Also, he didn't feel the need to explain himself when he wasn't doing anything wrong.
It's not like he was cheating on Cecilia, they weren't even dating.
So to make a long story short, there was no need for any further words pertaining to the subject, in his eyes.
Ashton didn't know what else to say to his friend.
He sighed, "Just--can you tell me why you're pursuing her--"
"One, I didn't say I was pursuing anyone and two, don't say 'her' like she's got cooties." Calum was quick to shoot back, rolling his eyes as he made a left turn.
Ashton gave him a look then sat back in his seat, exhaling as he tried to find the right words to say.
"I just--I don't know, dude. It's not a good look--"
"I'm not doing anything!"
"--Yet, you're not doing anything yet but that can change!"
The two went back and forth, which eventually led to Calum bitterly chuckling then shaking his head.
This whole ordeal was ridiculous and no matter what he tried to throw at Ashton to get him off his back, it seemed to ricochet.
So, as they neared their school and the dropping of a pen could be heard in the car, Calum figures there was only one way to get the heat off him.
He deeply sighed then gave his golden-headed friend a glance.
"You know what...you're right." Calum had to literally spit the words out in order to get them out, guilt pouring through his veins.
Ashton knotted his brows together, slowly turning to his friend as he put the car in park.
"What?"
"I'm just--I have something great and unique with Cecilia so I shouldn't be all over some other girl I literally saw twice or anyone else, really." Calum faux confessed, taking his seatbelt off and grabbing both his backpack and sports bag from the backseat.
The golden haired boy blinked twice. "Uh, yeah, dude that's what I meant--are you sure you're like, cool? It just seems a bit weird since you were just defending--"
"It takes a good friend to realize when I'm way over my head and need to reconsider my steps." Calum interrupted, cutting Ashton off. He could feel his guilt rise as his friend carried on so he needed to stop him.
Ashton smiled lightly and nodded, falling for his friend's faux response.
"Yeah, I uh, didn't really mean what I said back there, dude," Ashton continued and Calum sighed quietly because he was hoping he'd end the conversation right there. He was only making this harder to carry on. "Y'know about the whole ratting you out to Cecilia thing." The golden haired boy whispered the latter half of his words, glancing around as he climbed out the car.
The brown boy stepped out the driver's seat, both bags in hand and shook his head.
Another lie escaped his plump pink lips.
"It's all good, bro. It never even happened." Calum replied warmly, offering a side-smile and nudging Ashton with his bag.
Yet, the words were like vinegar to the tongue, bitter and clear, unbearable and vague.
He was, in fact, still a bit ticked off because his friend of eight years was willing to snitch on him for some pretty girl.
And it happened, it actually happened.
There was no doubting it; his friend was in fact, ready to snitch to someone that doesn't even like him.
But Calum had to swallow all of that and lie to his best friend.
And maybe their scenarios weren't so different.
Calum was willing to lie for the girl who made his heart skip a few beats and Ashton was willing to tell the truth to the girl who wouldn't care if his heart beats stopped.
But Calum knew there was some good in blurring that fine line between lies and truths.
And that 'good' was none other than Blu.
Ashton flashed a smile his friend's way and nodded, slapping his hands together.
"Now that that's over, are you ready to rock out on the field?" He enthusiastically shouted, bringing a chuckle from Calum's lips.
The brown boy nodded in agreement. "Yeah, just be prepared to protect those balls." Calum responded with a smirk, passing by Ashton since he halted in his step.
He knotted his brows together, his smile slowly dropping.
"Wait, which ones?"
-
Calum had never worked so hard in his life.
And that's not just on the soccer field.
No, he's always worked hard there but it was everything else that seemed more complicated.
Like, trying to keep his mind off of Blu as they did drills during practice.
Or holding back the urge to kick the ball a bit harder at the goalie (Ashton).
Or having to speed walk, though very sore, from practice and to his locker.
But, the boy was sure it was avoiding Cecilia and her demons as he quickly exited the school, taking an alternate route home.
Now, now as he sits on his bed, fresh out the shower with nothing but a towel around his waist, he stares at the alarm clock on his bedside table.
It was time.
Well, it was about a minute away from the right time.
Which, from Calum's standpoint, seemed to be an hour away.
He was a nervous wreck. His heart beat could be heard as he anticipated picking the phone up and dialing the girl's number.
And that's not often said.
Of course, Calum wasn't this chick magnet, one who had every girl on hold until he felt like it.
No, but he did have his fair share of girls.
But none, not even Cecilia, made him feel the way Blu made him feel.
That's what excited Calum, the rush.
That's what had him wanting more even after one taste, like a potato chip.
That's what made him so anxious to get home and patiently wait just to call the girl.
And that's what helped him muster up the courage to grab his house phone, dialing the number he etched into his brain.
But that's what also made him gulp, one that could be heard across the room, when the rings stopped and he heard another voice on the other end of the phone.
"Who is calling my phone this late?" The voice sassily greeted, making Calum's eyes grow in size. He was sure he was close to fainting.
When he didn't answer right away and the person tried again for a reply, sighing angrily an 'Hello?!', Calum nearly went in his pants.
Finally, he cleared his throat, attempting to find his voice, replying to the person.
"I'm sorry. I didn't --uh, mean to call--"
"You ain't mean to call? Well then why you raising my bill, mista?" She continued, making the boy a stammering mess.
He felt like hanging up and hiding in his room for the rest of his life. His embarrassment was through the roof and he was ready to just end everything right there.
Yeah, it would suck to not have Blu in his life but this was far too embarrassing.
Just as he was inches from hanging up, he heard a giggle seep through the top half of the phone.
Calum's browns widened in realization and his mouth dropped.
"Gotcha." He heard Blu playfully say, making the boy throw his head back and groan.
The girl began to chuckle, again.
But this was anything but funny to the boy...well, okay maybe it was a drop funny.
Other than that, he was close to having a heart attack, which made this small prank not too funny.
"You're paying for my hospital bill." Calum commented, reaching a hand to his chest, deeply breathing to slow his beating heart.
However, Blu continued to laugh her head off, nearly waking her mama and actually getting in trouble.
Or worse, waking the sleeping baby in her arms.
Blu happily sighed, "Sorry, boo. It was just too easy." She cooed, bringing a smirk to Calum's face, her words clearly fueling him.
And maybe his heart continued to beat fast but maybe that wasn't so bad in this case.
"Well, if you keep calling me that then I might be able to forgive you." Calum boyishly uttered, making the girl roll her eyes playfully. She knew it was only a matter of time until his cocky side reared its cute head.
The girl placed the newborn in the crib and headed for her bathroom, angling her head to make sure no one was around before she locked herself inside.
"Oh, so I'm not forgiven?" Blu snorted, grinning as she awaited the boy's reply.
"I mean, that can be changed..."He laid back in his bed and smirked, letting his words linger between the phone line.
Blu couldn't do anything but smile, her cheeks hurting in the process but it hurt so good.
It kind of scared her how he got such a reaction out of her so soon but it's not like she could control it.
Everything in her mind told her not to.
Yet, there she was, goofy smile on her face as she talked to Calum on the phone.
"Word?"
"What word?" Calum asked, furrowing his brows slightly.
Blu couldn't help but chuckle, which in turn caused the boy to nervously titter, still very confused.
Which also, ruined the moment, forcing the girl to change the subject.
"Never mind. Why were you at my school? You peepin' on me?." She asked jokingly, pacing back and forth in her small bathroom.
Calum chuckled lightly, "Yeah, you wish, huh?" Blu sucked her teeth in reply then the boy continued. "Actually I was there to check out the competition." He explained, playing with a loose string on his towel.
Blu stopped pacing and raised her brows. "For real? Yo, that's why Reese was hot all day today."
Calum was surprised to hear that his little conversation with the boy worked, it stirred his emotions which is exactly what he wanted.
Now he knew exactly what to do to throw the light-skinned boy off his game.
But that's not what Calum wanted to discuss.
Though, it would've been quite funny, that's not what he wanted.
Calum licked his lips and shrugged. "Yeah, I guess so. You should come to the game and support."
Blu chuckled softly, "A soccer game?"
"What? You've never been to a game?" Calum questioned, furrowing his brows.
"Nah, not my cup of tea...but I might swing by and support my school." The girl replied, feigning school spirit, making the boy chuckle.
"Just your school?" He asked, playing along with the girl, though he knew she was full of it.
"Just my school, homeboy." Blu falsely reassured, a smirk on her face.
Calum let off a soft chuckle and stood from his bed.
"See you at the game, Baby Blu." Calum said, his voice deepening the slightest, something the girl definitely noticed.
The girl had to bite down on her bottom lip to prevent from grinning too hard.
"Likewise, boo." She replied, hanging up, though she could've stayed on forever.
Calum could only smile, slowly removing the phone from his ear, and certainly looking more forward to his next game than any before.
