Some notes on our beloved Faefolk
Now, this is a little messy, so bear with me. It's basically just a glut of information I compiled based on all the nonsense that is swimming in my head.
Not to be confused with the faefolk of common human folklore, the fae are very much like humans in most physiological ways; reproduction, etc. I merely call them Faes for lack of a better name, plus they ARE loosely based on actual faes/inspired by them.
Faefolk can portal to different worlds/universes/dimensions and as a result of this there's been a lot of commingling between them and the humans. Of course they mainly inhabit the fae realm but that doesn't stop them from going abroad.
Most Faefolk are very accepting of outsiders and non-faes; of course there are groups of deviants who reject both traditional fae culture/hospitality as well as humankind.
Fae are compatible with humans, so mixed families are not uncommon, though many humans are opposed to such unions.
Gestation period for fae infants is only 7 months, unlike the 9 month period for humans. They have a longer lifespan than humans, and while they appear to mature a bit quicker, their body appears to age more slowly.
All fae have sharp, fanglike canines! It is mainly to support their diet, which involves the consumption of various beasts, but it is also just another way to distinguish them from humans. Besides, fangies are cool!
Some fae have beast forms! Others just get REALLY tall XD
Yes, they have skin color variations, you stupid liberal racist mongrels. Many of them have fair skin but it really just depends on what region they're from and where they've chosen to live. They adapt to survive, just as anyone would.
In many ways, the fae can act more animal than human. For instance, they can flick their ears, purr, chirp, and make little warbling noises as well as growl; very much like cats. Most of these attributes seem to be isolated and found in the Shadowfolk but that doesn't only apply to them. The Shadowfolk have venom glands, but most fae do not. The Shadowfolk also act more catlike than any other fae group.
Most fae are born with some sort of special ability such as fire manipulation, healing flame, shadow manipulation, etc. Their ability is often reflected in their hair color. For example, shadow users will typically have dark hair with blue, purple, or even gray accents. Fire users typically have red or orange in their hair, while healers can range from very light shades to very dark.
Their abilities are also recognizable by a specific birthmark in a specific area on the fae's skin. Healers will generally have a large mark either on the face, or the back of the hand. Fire Users (aka Phoenixes) usually have two marks: one on the face, and one on the neck. Shadow users' marks typically appear on their backs, chests, or near one of their eyes.
On the subject of marks, you may be wondering...can the marks ever be removed?
And the answer is yes, they can be. If any Marked individual commits acts against tradition or the laws of their trade, they can have their mark taken from them, and with it their ability. Individuals who experience this due to severe misconduct are often exiled until they repent, then they may begin to work to regain their mark.
While this should mean that many of the deviants would be powerless, it is not always the case. Defacto faes band together and form their own tribes, clans, or cults, which brings us to our next point...
Adam's people, whom I have been temporarily referring to as the Shadowfolk, are a hunted people; a tribe on the brink of extinction. Because of their ability to manipulate darkness and the fact that from them stems an entire bloodline of Reapers, they are seen by many as an evil force which must be eliminated. While some Shadowfolk may use their abilities for evil, the majority are not evil.
Adam and his father very well could be the last of their kind, due to the Shadowfolk being hunted down by those groups of deviants I briefly mentioned earlier. The deviants are aggressive to humans and faefolk alike, as well as the nymphs and sirens. Some of these deviants are even cannibals (*cough cough* Spade–)
