The World of the Second Age

This is an overview of the world in which I am writing about. In hindsight, I should have done this sooner, but alas here it is. Thank you @AylinAkinal for the suggestion.

The Continent

During the time of the second age, the world consisted of one massive supercontinent, known by most simply as 'the continent'. It covered a little under half the planet and was a place where most occupants of the world lived. There were numerous islands dotting the ocean, but no other large landmasses.

Both humans and dragons call this place home, with dragons being the dominant species. Dragons typically keep humans as slaves or servants, using them to build, farm, mine, and help with other intricate things that human hands are good for. When finding a free human village, a dragon party will usually raid to find more workers, that or they will strike a deal with the leaders of the community that they will help with whatever the dragon's need help with. In return, however, many dragons will protect any human friends with ferocity.

Several centuries before the end of the second age several wars break out known as the 'Ashen Wars'. These wars caused the dragon species to split into seven different nations that each occupy a portion of The Continent. To the north is the physical species of dragons, to the south are the energy species, and directly in the middle is the mental species of dragons. This allowed peace to reign amongst the nations, and it has been this way for many years.

The Fire Nation

Species: Fire, Lightning, and Chaos

Ruler: Athaer, Queen of Fire

Lightning Representative: Joy'el, dragoness

Chaos Representative: Agonel, Drake

The ruler of the fire nation is typically the most powerful dragon within the nation and is often chosen through a fight to the death between the current ruler and a challenger. Any dragon can make this challenge if they are considered mentally fit to take the role, and they are part of the fire nation. The challenger must be twenty years of age or older. If a lightning or chaos dragon wishes to try for the place of the position, they must first defeat the representative of their race and take their position, before challenging the throne. For a fire dragon, they can simply challenge the current ruler. This would change if one of the other species claimed the throne. One day of every month is set aside to allow for a challenger to fight for their right to rule.

The fire nation occupies southern-most point of the continent and is split into three cities, one for each of the species. The fire city is the largest and the furthest south of all of them, right on the edge of the ocean. The other cities hold the borders. Directly bordering the fire nation is the light nation to the west, the shadow nation to the east, and the mental nation directly to the north.

The Light Nation

Species: Light

Ruler: Lumiane, king of light

The light nation is considered a rather noble nation and chooses their rulers based on direct lineage to the king, who often has many offspring. Usually the most powerful among them are considered, and often it is a drake that is chosen. There are several noble families because of this, many of these rulers of their own cities or towns.

The Light kingdom occupies the South West of the continent. It has many cities and towns within its borders, with the largest being The City of the Sun, directly in the centre of their land. It is bordered by the fire nation to the east, the water nation to the north, and the mental nation to the north-east.

The Water Nation

Species: Water and Acid

Ruler: Siedon, King of the ocean

Acid Representative: Zagen, drake

The water nation, much like the light nation, chooses their ruler and representatives based on lineage. This hasn't been tested much, as their king is one of the oldest dragons alive and has been their ruler since the Ashen wars. Water dragons and acid dragons have interbred often, and because of that their main city is a mixture of the two species. Zagen is a direct descendant of Siedon, and because he is the most powerful of those descendants, he was chosen to be the representative.

There are several cities within the water nation, both in the sea and on the land. While technically the water nation owns the north-west of the continent, they have many underwater water dragon settlements that are spread around the ocean on the outskirts of the continent. The biggest of these is Ocean City, directly off the coast of their kingdom. The second-largest city, where many acid dragons dwell, holds the middle of the nation. They are bordered by the light nation to the south, the earthen nation to the east, and the mental nation to the south-east.

The Earthen Nation

Species: Earth, Crystal, and Metal

Ruler: Strager, King of Steel

Earth Representative: Garner, drake

Crystal representative: Opallio, Dragoness

The earthen nation is a largely democratic system, with each species voting in a representative for their species. Those three then choose amongst themselves which will be put forward as the king or queen of their nation.

The earthen nation is the largest of all seven nations, taking up the most land and the highest population. It has several large cities spread throughout its borders, with no set area for each species. Because of its size, this nation is often considered the most powerful. It takes up much of the far north of the continent. It is bordered by the water nation to the west, the Sky nation to the east, and the mental nation to the south.

The Sky Nation

Species: Wind and Ice

Ruler: Polliar, queen of the sky

Ice Representative: Ingun, Drake

The sky nation chooses its leader by merit. It is a mantle passed from one leader to the next, whether that be an ice dragon or a wind dragon. It is entirely up to the ruler when and how to pass of this mantle, and to whom they do so. Often it is the dragon with the most power, and with the greatest head for leadership.

The wind nation occupies the north-east side of the continent. It doesn't have massive cities like the other nations, but rather a vast majority of the dragon population occupy a mountain range known as the Sky's Teeth. These are considered by many to be the largest mountains in the world. The rest of the sky kingdom is mainly long flat plains where not much grows. The nation is bordered by the earth nation to the west, the shadow nation to the south, and the mental nation to the south-west.

The Shadow Nation

Species: Shadow

Ruler: Ender, King of darkness

Much like the light nation, the ruler of this nation is chosen by lineage, however, the families of shadow dragons are much smaller and tight-knit. A shadow dragon would likely only have one mate, while a light dragon would have many. Because of this, the few hatchlings a leader of the shadow nation does have are pushed quite heavily to increase in power, even going so far as to push them into equilibrium in order to have a strong leader to succeed the previous one.

The shadow dragons occupy the south-east side of the continent. They are a secretive species, not having obvious cities or towns, nor do they keep human slaves. Instead, they hide themselves in amongst the many mountains and hills within their nation. They are also nocturnal. Their kingdom borders that of the Sky nation to the North, The fire nation to the west, and the Mental nation to the north-west.

The Mental Nation

Species: Mind, Telekinetic, Storm/Weather, Gravity, and Spirit

Rulers: King Laywil and Queen Vanilier, Monarchs of the Mind

Telekinetic Representative: Talon, Drake

Storm Representative: Zay'ues, Drake

Gravity Representative: Forrice, Dragoness

Spirit Representative: Eledior, Dragoness

The ruler of the mental nation is almost always a mind dragon, as they can investigate another dragon's heart and soul to be able to determine what is best for their nation. Among the mind dragons, a leader is chosen through merit and power. Often it is a pair leading the nation as a mated couple. The representatives of the other species within the nation are chosen by the two rulers.

The Mental nation is the smallest and is placed exactly in the middle of the continent. It has four cities, one for the telekinetic dragons, one for the storm dragons, one for the gravity dragons, and one for the mind dragons. The mind dragon city is directly in the centre, with the telekinetic city to the south-east, the storm city to the south-west, and the gravity city to the north. Spirit dragons have their own hidden series of caves, known as the Conclave of Spirits, as there are not enough spirit dragons to have an entire city dedicated to them.

Rift Dragons

Representative: Dansion, Drake

Rift dragons have no set nation and tend to live wherever they please. Because of their ability to create portals, they are often hired as messengers, able to travel long distances in a very short amount of time. The most powerful among them are able to go from one side of the continent to the other in a near-instant.

While they don't have a proper nation, Dansion maintains a base of operations on an island somewhere in the ocean, nobody really knows exactly where besides the rift dragons (and mind dragons). This is where they hatch their young and if needed decide on who will be the representative of their race through a democratic vote.

Life Dragons

Representative: Tuden, Drake

Much like rift dragons, the life dragon species has not settled down with a nation. They mostly move around the borders of the mental nation and the other nations, their powers of healing of great use to all the nations. They also hold a monopoly on much of the farmland, their healing powers allowing livestock to grow happy and healthy. Because of this, it is their kind that has the greatest use for humans. Their representative is usually chosen from the richest among them, as they have the greatest say in what food goes where.

While they don't have a proper nation, the biggest 'city' of life dragons, which is more of a village, lies at the borders of the shadow nation and the mental nation. This is where Tuden lives, with an enormous amount of land to use to grow livestock, as well as create human homes and villages, which he guards incredibly jealously. Life dragons are the most widely respected race, as they bring both healing and food.
