Christmas Dinner

Kai's mum was overrun in the kitchen cooking for sixteen family members, "is your sister here yet?" Kai's mother calls from the kitchen.

"Not yet," the blonde-haired young lad said poking his head around the corner.

"I swear she's always so late," her mother said.

"She's probably stuck in traffic or something," he replies, and phones his sister, "Where the hell are you mums starting to have fit!"

"I'm on my way, just had issues getting the dog in the car....." he interrupts her.

"You're bringing the dog here? You know angry mums going to be!"

"Well she knows I take the dog everywhere with me," she says.

"I know, but just get here!" he demands and hangs up.

"Go, he is always so demanding, even when he's not with the forces," she says as pets her dog's head as they sit at the traffic lights.  "I am sure they'll be okay waiting a bit longer." After an hour she finally reached her mother's place where all her family had now gathered when she walked in she saw her brother stirring the gravy.

"Finally!" He said.

"We were starting to think you were never going to arrive," her brother said.

"And miss Christmas with my family?" she asked and walked into the kitchen with the dog following her.

"Arabella you brought the dog!" her mother exclaimed as he jumped up and grabbed a carrot off the countertop.

"Ivar bad dog!" She said trying to wrestle the carrot off him but it snapped off in her hand and she fell back on the floor while the dog trotted out to the living room.

"While you're in the kitchen check the turkey!" Her mother exclaims, Arabella sighs and gets up to check the turkey in the oven.

"Smells delicious!" she says.  "Kai, you're burning the roast potatoes and they're my favourite!"

"Aw, poor baby!" He teases his sister.

"Both of you stop bickering!" her mum says. "Every Christmas you both always have to bicker. Arabella close the oven and keep an eye on the vegetables, Kai go set the table!"  Her mum tells them both to get each other out of the way. Arabella and her mum both cook together in the kitchen. "Now stir the gravy before you it burns again."

"I am sure it will be fine!" she says.

"You may like your gravy burnt but the rest of your family don't," she reminded her pointing a wooden spoon at her. Arabelle rolls her eyes.

"Uh-huh, just I don't like my veggies soft," she said, "and nor does Ivar."

"I am not feeding your dog a roast dinner, he can have kibbles," her mother says.

"No, he gets to eat with the rest of us," Arabella responded.

"Fine, but another room," she says.

"Yeah, I can settle with that," Arabella said helping her mother plate up, piling up the food on her brother's plate.

"You remember your brother has a big appetite," her mother chuckles as she makes a mountain of food on his plate.

"Oh yeah, he's going to be very happy," Arabella smiles and starts to take all the plates out to everyone, placing one down in front of everyone. She then took her place next to her brother and pulled the cracker, both pulling their against each other strength until Kai pulled it out of her hands.

"See, I always win, but you can keep the crown since you're the pretty princess," Kai said and placed the pink crown on her head.

"I hate you sometimes," Arabella said, reluctantly taking the pink paper crown.
