Candycane Unicorn

In the North Pole, the candy cane forest was well known, and the smell of mint wafted around, giving a fresh feeling to anyone who wandered the forest alone. The most shy and unique species lives in the red and white striped forest. It is the Candycane Unicorn. They are weary of anyone who wanders into the forest, often shying behind the large white and red structures or the large red and white circles. Their coats are pure white, and their manes, tails, and horns are red and white striped. Snow stuck to their backs and gave them the appearance of glittering as they trotted up and down.

They would break the ice with their strong horns and push the ice out of the way with their snouts to get a drink of the frigid water below. Their hooves too glittered in the sun and appeared almost glass-like. A few of the unicorns had already been domesticated to help fell the candy canes and to take the debris back to the workshop to be made into Christmas Candy for the children, they would take the debris back by the sledgeloads. The remaining unicorns watched in fear as several of their candy cane trees fell and galloped away in fright to the other side of the forest.

A few elves had reindeer that they used to help with the return of the debris, a few deer could sense the unicorns and the younger ones often wandered closer to get a good look and investigate. The unicorns too would walk toward the deer and have a look at them in turn. The pair of creatures looked them over and sniffed each other taking in the different scents. Their eyes too roamed over each other taking in their differences, but the moment an elf walked over to retrieve the deer the unicorns galloped off and hid once more. "Skittish creatures," the elf laughed to himself and returned to the workshop with the rest of the elves and their collection of debris.

The unicorns followed back, the town always intrigued them but none would step a hoof into the territory of the town for the fear of being caught and being forced to be domesticated. Even the unicorns that they already had missed their freedom and yearned to be back with their herd. The other unicorns sensed them and neighed loudly to greet them, the wild ones neighed back in answer. The creatures were sacred to the elves even if they were mysterious and elusive to most of the townsfolk.

They were beautiful and most gawped at them domesticated or wild. They did cause jealousy around the town and most were envious, they knew only the most skilled elf could catch and domesticate them. But Santa however, limited the unicorns to how many could be domesticated as the North Pole was their home and they should stay free, every few weeks the elves let their domesticated unicorns free and let them join their herd once again.
