Chapter 3
Later that day Jenna and Hailey and i were sitting at the food court in the mall eating frozen yogurt. "You're moving where?!" Asked Jenna, she dropped her spoon into her yogurt. "Colorado." "Are you sure your mom didn't me California." Asked Hailey shaking her head. "I'm sure my mom has now been obsessed with Christmas she has been playing christmas music all day it is so annoying. So she wants to open some stupid Christmas town. She says i can help out." "By how being a cute little elf or like an angel. I feel so bad for you." Said Jenna snorting. "Guys what am i gonna do?" I groaned. "You're just gonna have to suck it up and i really am sorry." Said Hailey placing her hand on my arm. "This was supposed to be our senior year now i have to spend it with some eskimos what if they're all like really mean to me?" I asked. "AAh get the tan girl!!" She said laughing. I glared at Jenna. "No." I said stopping her thoughts dead in their tracks. "So where did your parents get this kind of cash anyways? I mean i know y'all have always been well off but that's a lot" Said Hailey.
"Well my parents saved up for years for this, can you believe it years and they didn't even tell me. Plus when my grandmaw Lindy died she left everything to my mom." I said wiping my mouth with my napkin. "So your parents just out of the blue decided to open a christmas town?" Asked Hailey. "No like i said my mom has been planning this for years she has like all these charts with everything mapped out to a t, it's so scary. She just made some big stink about it being her dream." My phone started to go off. Silent night. Oh no my mother did not. Jenna and Hailey burst out laughing.
I looked at the screen it was my mother. "Mom please tell me you did not change my ringtone!?" "It was hal.." "Half price i know but i liked my old one." "Sorry dear, i just wanted to help you get in the spirit of christmas. Speaking of i found this great sweater and i laid it on your bed it's going to look so cute on you!" "Mom i'd really rather not wear a christmas sweater in the middle of may It is too hot! But thanks for thinking of me." I said trying to appease her. "Oh dear but it's so you." My mom gasped. "No mom this Christmas thing is you, and i'm trying to go along with it so can't you just be glad i'm on board and not push?" I asked.
"You're right you're absolutely right." She said. "I love you mom it's just such a big change and were moving far away and i just wished that you would talk to me about this kind of stuff before you just go and do it." "Ok dear i can respect that well there goes my cell i need to get back to work." She said before hanging up. She didn't even say bye. "What was that about?" Asked Hailey.
"I have no clue but if we weren't moving i'm sure my mom would be putting up the christmas tree right now." I started going through my phone setting to change my ringtone back. I finished the last of my yogurt and threw my cup into the garbage can. "So when you say moving you mean you're really going to be moving? And so soon were going to miss you." Said Jenna "Thanks for finally saying that i felt like you guys have been avoiding it a bit." I said my blue eyes getting a bit misty. "No we weren't trying to we were just as in shock as you, i can't believe this. You're our best friend what are we going to do without you?" Asked Hailey. "Miss me every second of everyday?" I asked. "Well...."
"I'm kidding you guys. We'll be fine. We will call each other every day and email and text...i'm sure we get signal out there. And you guys can even come and visit." I said standing up to wrap them both in a group hug. "Were just gonna miss you Lexi!" Said Jenna tearing up. "I know me to." I sniffled. We pulled back. "Look, you'll be busy getting the new house together and the town and going to school and making new friends you won't worry about us." Said Hailey. "First of all that is true but i'm going to call you. And you'll call me. We'll make it work." I said. "Yea but senior year won't be the same without you." Jenna said. "I know, i know." We pulled back from our hug.
My mom was firing off text's. My phone kept beeping. "Is that your mom?" Hailey asked. "Yes, she's asking if i'm coming home for lunch. I'm starved but i have to go see Mark." I said. "Oh saved the best for last i see." Said Hailey. "Hardly, i'm scared!" I said. "You'll be fine, go we love you." Said Jenna. "Thanks you guys, bye." I said waving and giving them one last hug. I think my mom felt guilty about springing this move on me. I also think she felt that she was so busy that she forgot how much she was calling and texting me. I drove to Mark's house.
Sitting on Marks couch he was holding my hand. "We need to talk." I said. He dropped it like a dead fish. "Are you breaking up with me?" He said his face ghost white. "What? No! Of course not. Look were moving." I said. "Moving what? Why? Where?" He asked.
"Colorado. My mom thinks this is her last chance at her dreams." I said. "Well what about your dreams?" He asked. "I don't know." I sighed. "But it was supposed to be our senior year." He said. "I know, but i'll be back. I mean i'm going to the university of Florida." I said. "Yea, that's right and it's only like a year. But long distance relationships don't work out because they are hard." He said.
"I know that. But we can make it if we try." I said comforting. "You're right babe and i'm sorry for being selfish. You're the one moving all the way to the snow." "Snow, what am i going to do with snow?" I asked. "Well i think snow boarding is kind of like surfing." He mused.
"I don't think it is." I said laughing. We finished talking and he hugged me tight saying he would miss me then i kissed him. One last time. I cried as i drove home. I was really mad at my parents for doing this. But not just that for not telling me sooner.
I mean i had one year of school left why couldn't they wait. I wiped my eyes. I had skipped lunch and was starving. When i walked inside my mom had left overs on the stove. I fixed a plate and ate alone. My parents were still both talking on the phone. "Oh great, i like the idea of your son working with you. I can bug him about small projects. Oh Tyler, he sounds lovely. Great well i'm happy to have your team on board i mean this is a huge job. Once the house is done we'll start working on the town. I'd like to get this done asap. My daughter will be helping as well, Lexi. Now i might hire a second crew or so to give you guys some help. This is a big project...." She trailed off as she left the room.
"Well i'd like to go ahead and correct the rotten wood in the house. We need it safe to walk on..." She came out carrying a box. She walked outside to put it in the u haul. She walked back in. "Well if the roof needs to go then let's do that. Can you have both done by the time we arrive in three days? Perfect great thank you. Also check out all the plumbing and Electric it's an old house. Okay have a good day. Alright bye-bye." She hung up the phone and i was halfway through with dinner.
"Oh hi honey sorry about all the phone calls. This is just all happening so fast." "Mhm." I said. "Are you okay with this?" She asked. "No, i'm not i have one year of high school i don't want to do this!!" I screamed. "I thought you were okay with all of this?" She asked. "No, i just said that because i didn't know what else to say. And you didn't even ask me my plans on this. See the problem is you want us to do this as a family. You want me to help you decorate the house, and fix up the town but yet you didn't even talk to me about this first." I said.
"I guess you're right, i want us to do this as a family then i should've talked to you. It's just this is the perfect location and when i talked to the realtor they had somebody else who wanted the place so i just told them i would take it. I don't know why. I guess it's stupid to force my dreams on you too." She slumped down in the chair. Great well now i felt bad. For the second time today. Leave it to my mom to know just what to say to make me feel guilty.
"Mom no look it's fine. You've already bought a house and a whole town were going and i'll come back for school. It's one year it'll be fine." I said in a rush. "Are you sure?" She asked. I nodded. "So i'll have no friends whatever." I said. "Well the guy i hired to work on the house has a son who's going to be a senior at your school. Tyler, maybe you and him can be friends." She said. "Yea, sure." I said standing up and rinsing my plate in the sink. "When are we leaving?" I asked. "Wednesday." It was Monday. That meant we only had two days.
I'd just have to finish packing. But it was all hands on deck. Once my room was done we started packing the rest of the house. Mom took special care of the breakable stuff. Dad loaded the heavy boxes into the u haul and i taped together more boxes. We were a well oiled machine.
Come Wednesday everything was loaded into the u haul. My friends and Mark had come to say goodbye. It was a teary goodbye all around. But every one promised to visit and we would speak everyday. I watched out the back window waving until i couldn't see them anymore. This was bitter. I felt the saying bittersweet didn't apply here. I was not happy.
