Chapter three
Getting to a large food court, Shannon spotted the iconic beard wearing Santa, packing up his photo set. Shannon shook Jungkook's arm. "Look! Santa! Let's get a picture with him before he leaves!" She bubbled. Jungkook chuckled before leading her over to the Christmas icon. "Santa!" Shannon called to the man childishly. Santa, who was leaning over a box and packing his items into it suddenly turned at the sound of Shannon's voice.
He smiled seeing her. "Oh, Hello!" He said jollily. Shannon let go of Jungkook and grabbed the older man's arm. "Jungkook! Take a photo of us!" Jungkook laughed heartily, enjoying seeing his beautiful girlfriend being so joyful. He fished his phone out of his pocket and opened up the camera. Shannon and Santa got into a small side hugging pose and Jungkook snapped a picture, handing the phone over to Shannon to review. "AWW cute!" She cooed.
Suddenly she handed the phone over to Santa. "Could you take a picture of us?" She asked the man. Santa looked shocked but readily took the phone; Shannon instructed him on how to take the picture. "Ready?" Santa asked as Shannon and Jungkook got into a pose. "Yep!" They both answered in union. But just as the snap of the camera shot was heard, Shannon grabbed Jungkook by the cheeks and lowered his face to hers, capturing his lips with her own. Jungkook's eyes went wide as the picture was taken, and just as quick as it had happened, Shannon pulled away and reached out for the phone. Shannon reviewed the photo as if it was nothing, telling Jungkook she would save it as his wallpaper, but poor Jungkook's mind was a mess; his face as red as a tomato; he barely knew what was going on.
Santa chuckled. "So what would you like for Christmas, little lady?" He asked. Shannon thought for a while, but when she looked at Jungkook's still red face, she knew the answer. "I want Jungkook and I to live happily ever after. Just like in the fairy tales." She answered, like a small child. Jungkook went a darker hue of red, and Santa guffawed. "Ok, then, little miss." He pulled up his sagging trousers. "Anyway, I better get back to packing up. Have a Merry Christmas!" He wished. Jungkook and Shannon returned the farewell and they left.
One seems to hear words of good cheer, from everywhere filling the air, oh how they pound, raising the sound, o'er hill and dale, telling their tale...
The resonating singing of 'Carol of the bells' echoed through the empty mall from the speakers this time, and Jungkook felt a shiver going down his spine at every word. It seemed that the deeper they went down the malls levels; down the escalators; the eerier it felt. The feeling of joy and childish love they had felt on the previous level had almost disappeared.
Jungkook felt like he was being watched, the itching need to look over his back every second creeping under his skin. The bells ringing in the song echoed in his ears, hauntingly. The air felt colder than when they first entered, even Shannon was rubbing her arms, shivering. Jungkook shrugged off his jacket, revealing his moss green top straining against his broad chest beneath it, and handed it to her. She pulled the jacket on; inhaling the masculine scent of Jungkook it was lined with.
"What time is it?" Shannon asked, trying to clear the air. She could feel the air in the room as well. The hair on her neck had stood up, and she was unsure why, she felt on edge and she didn't like it. This was her first date. Maybe it was just nerves. Jungkook cleared his throat and looked down at his gold watch, which was once again, another attainment from his job. But upon looking at the clock face, Jungkook's eye brows furrowed. "It doesn't seem to be working." He crinkled his nose. "Weird. It was working upstairs." He observed the watch as its hands went haywire around the face, like a compass without a direction.
Shannon leaned over to look at the watch. "Hmm. Weird." She commented. "So where do we go now?" Jungkook asked her, kind of on edge from the atmosphere and in a rush to get home because of it. He hoped Shannon did too. "There's a phone store down on the next level, I'll just get him a new case for his ipad and then we can go. I'm starting to feel a little uncomfortable down here for some reason." Jungkook nodded solemnly, the fact that she felt the same way meant they could get home faster. "It's probably just because it' so empty in here. It's so weird for a mall to be empty like this late on a Christmas Eve night." Shannon hummed in agreement. Besides the store owners of the stores they had visited, Jungkook and Shannon had only seen about five people, and there were 5 levels in the massive mall. They were already on the fourth and they hadn't seen anybody on this level yet.
They reached the escalator to the last level and walked down it. The air dropped as if they had all of the sudden gone from a refrigerator to a freezer. The edgy feeling they had felt on the previous level felt like it had drunk a can of red bull. Both of them wanted to leave, but neither said anything. The lights seemed dimmer, the small shop signs lining the walls illuminating the area like stars. Shannon felt butterflies in her stomach, but they were no longer caused by Jungkook. A slight scent of something past expiration date wafted in the air and made her feel nauseous, but she kept going.
Finally they made it to the flickering neon sign of the phone store. The two walked inside, looking around for a phone case, trying to brush off the feelings in their stomachs that something was definitely wrong. Finally, Shannon's eyes landed on a black and green ipad case. She picked it up with hesitation and headed to the counter, which was odd for the usually indecisive girl, but Jungkook didn't complain. He felt like he was holding in his breath and he was sure if he could just run back up to the first level and out the door, he would be able to breathe the fresh air again.
When they got to the counter, no one was there. Shannon rung the bell, almost upon impatient instinct, contrary to the patient person she usually was. No one came to the counter. There were no footsteps from the backroom, nothing. The air felt heavy and she felt like she was breathing cement. She rang the bell again. And again. No one came. And she had a feeling that was because there was no one there. Or at least, not anymore.
Jungkook grasped her hand but she yanked her hand out of his; she had no idea why she was like this. Not a while ago she was kissing the man, telling him she never wanted the date to end. But now, all she wanted to do was get this case, get back into Jungkook's car and race back home. Anywhere away from this place.
