"Good morning, Virgil." Logan greeted the following day, seeing Virgil approaching his house. Logan had already gone out to open up his garage door, preparing for Virgil to get there. All of the decorations the two had bought previously were still inside, waiting to be put up in their yards.
"Morning," Virgil mumbled back as he approached, smiling at Logan. He gestured over to the decorations the two had purchased. "What do you think we should start with?"
"I think the Christmas tree would be a good start. I believe it is the biggest thing that we bought, so we could get it out of the way first and put up the smaller decorations afterwards." Logan suggested, moving over to the box the black tree was in and pulling it out. Virgil agreed, going to get the ornaments out for the tree as Logan carried it over to Virgil's yard where they planned to set it up.
Logan had managed to open the box and started reading the instructions as Virgil placed the grocery bags full of decorations down, moving to look over Logan's shoulder at the instructions as well. The tree seemed to be broken into three different pieces that all had pieces to connect to each other. Virgil frowned. "Why do they always have to make these things so complicated?"
"If the tree stayed connected it would most likely require a bigger box, and be harder to move." Logan guessed the reasoning as he set up the first tree piece from the box onto the ground. "But I do agree, it is needlessly complicated. I would be willing to have a tree that is harder to transport if it meant I spent less time attempting to set it up."
Virgil agreed with him, going to grab the second piece of the tree to place on top of the third one. Logan helped him to get it into place, successfully connecting the two pieces one on top of the other. Logan was the one to grab the third piece, as the tree was fairly tall and Logan was just slightly taller than Virgil. Virgil was still tall enough to reach the top of the second piece, and working together the two of them finally got the third piece on. They worked together to straighten up the branches of the tree, Logan happening to glance over at Virgil and pausing for a moment.
Virgil was grinning widely as he worked on getting the tree sorted out to put ornaments on. He looked excited, and it seemed that his excited smile was contagious as Logan wore a matching one watching him. It was nice to see the man enjoying himself as he put up decorations. However, Logan still tore his gaze away from the other quickly, not wanting to get too distracted. They would never finish getting decorations up if Logan allowed himself to get off track so easily.
With only a few more instances of Logan and Virgil getting distracted the pair managed to get a lot of their decorating completed. They got the tree set up and all of the ornaments hanging, plugging in the lights on the tree to an extension cord and making sure they worked. They managed to get a large decoration, one that looked like Zero from The Nightmare Before Christmas to hang from a wire on Logan's front porch, as well as a few other small decorations in various places in both of their yards. Unfortunately the sun set far too early, and by dinner time the sun had already started to disappear.
"I suppose we should probably stop for the night now," Logan said upon noticing it getting darker and more difficult to see.
"Probably," Virgil agreed, finishing up what he was working on and turning to Logan. Neither of them said anything for a moment, not really wanting to leave just yet. After a minute of silence Virgil smiled awkwardly, gesturing over to his house. "I guess I should probably, uh... Go back home, now. I... had a lot of fun decorating with you, today."
"I had fun as well," Logan returned the smile, thinking to himself for a moment. He frowned nervously before he spoke again. "If you would like, you could stay over a while longer. I have to make dinner for myself anyways, and I'm sure you're hungry as well so I could make something for the both of us. Though, it is up to you."
"Oh, you don't have to." Virgil shrugged his shoulders, glancing away nervously. He didn't want to make Logan do anything for him. "Not that I don't want to or anything! It was very nice of you to offer, and I'd love to hang out and talk for longer-"
"I don't mind, Virgil." Logan smiled politely at him again. "I would like to. As a thank you, for helping me today."
"You already thanked me for helping you though," Virgil pointed out with a raised eyebrow, referring to the tree Logan had gotten for him the day before. "And you let me choose our theme. I think that's plenty."
"I am simply very glad to have your help." Logan explained. "And it's not just to thank you. I would also like to get to know you a little better. Patton thinks the two of us would make good friends, I'd like to see if he was right."
"Oh," Virgil muttered, seeming a little surprised. "Well... As long as you don't mind, then alright. I'd love to come over for a little while."
Logan smiled at him once again, turning to lead him into his house. Virgil followed close behind, lingering behind him in the kitchen as Logan told him what he planned to make, and asking if it was alright.
"Sounds good to me," Virgil shrugged, moving to stand next to Logan and looking over at him. "Can I help with anything?"
"I told you I was making this to thank you." Logan said absently as he pulled more things out of the fridge and cabinets. "So I am going to make it."
"Didn't we also decide that you have already thanked me, and that this was more a way of getting to know each other?" Virgil questioned, looking over at Logan with a raised eyebrow. "And anyways, I feel awkward standing by and doing nothing. I'd like to help."
Logan looked over at him, considering for a moment before sighing. "Fine, I suppose you can help me out with this."
Virgil grinned as he paid attention to what Logan was having him work on, doing as he said immediately after his explanation. He continued to help do little things, all the while talking with Logan. The two joked and had a lot of fun working together, and soon enough they had finished making their food and were getting plates to sit down at the table.
"So," Logan spoke after a few moments of silence as the two enjoyed their food. "When exactly did you move in the neighborhood? I don't think you've been here for that long, have you?"
"Not really," Virgil shrugged, leaning back in his chair as he continued eating. "I've been here almost a year now. Why?"
"I'm simply curious what made you begin to dislike our neighbor so quickly, despite the rest of our neighborhood seeming to love him." Logan explained himself, earning a short laugh from Virgil.
"Oh," He muttered. "I actually went to high school with him. He's always been kind of an arrogant moron. I don't exactly hate him or anything, just think he's a little too full of himself."
"That makes sense," Logan nodded, smiling in amusement. "Yes, he is definitely arrogant. I just really hope that we can win this year and maybe get him to stop bragging about himself at least for a little while. Even a week would be nice."
"A day without him talking about himself sounds impossible," Virgil snorted, and Logan agreed.
The topic of conversation changed soon after that. Both of them continued to talk about anything and everything, having a lot of fun spending time together. They were surprised at how comfortable they both seemed to be after such a short amount of time spent together, but it was nice. It seemed like Patton had been right; the two of them did have a lot in common, and it seemed like they would continue to be good friends.
