Logan's breath was visible in front of him as he stood outside of his house, working with Virgil on setting up a large decoration. They were both freezing, as they had decided against taking a break a little while ago. It was Christmas Eve, the final day to put up decorations and they were so close to being done that they didn't really care about taking a break just yet; once they finished they could go back inside and sit under a blanket for a few hours until they finally warmed up.
Logan took a step back from the decoration, finishing his part and looking in Virgil's direction to find that he had just finished getting done as well. He smiled over at him, Virgil returning it as they both realized they were finally finished.
"Well, I think we've done a pretty good job." Logan said, looking back up at his yard and Virgil's. They certainly seemed to have the most decorations of anyone in the neighborhood, excluding Roman of course.
"Yeah, it looks awesome." Virgil agreed, shivering suddenly and tugging his jacket further around him. "I'd love to stay out here and admire our work more, but it's freezing. Can't we just go inside now and order a pizza to celebrate or something?"
Logan smiled a little wider-still conscious about not laughing too much and giving away too many of his emotions-and agreed with Virgil's plan. Soon enough they were inside, their pizza was ordered, and Virgil was waiting on Logan's couch as he searched for two small blankets for them to use while they watched tv. They were still freezing, but Logan only managed to find one.
He handed it to Virgil wordlessly, sitting down a few inches away from him, and starting to pull up the Doctor Who episode the two of them were on. Virgil watched him as he did, small frown on his lips. "Dude, aren't you cold too?"
"I am alright. That was the only blanket I could find, and you need it more." Logan spoke without looking over at Virgil, continuing to pull up their show. Virgil didn't say anything again for a while. When their pizza arrived Logan got up to get it, bringing it to the living room and setting the box on the coffee table along with paper plates for the two to get their pizza without having to get up and walk to the kitchen.
As soon as Logan sat down, once again a few inches away from Virgil, Virgil moved over so they were sitting directly beside each other. He didn't say anything as he tossed half of the blanket around Logan, going to get his pizza instead of drawing any attention to it. Both men's cheeks flushed red, Logan glancing over at Virgil but not questioning him. He quickly decided to try his best to ignore it, like Virgil was doing, but soon found that it was very difficult to just ignore it and stay calm when he was sitting this close with the man he had feelings for.
Logan wasn't entirely sure what had been going on in the show they were meant to be watching, two episodes passed that he couldn't focus on at all. He was too busy trying not to worry so much about the man beside of him, about how close they were. He tried not to wonder why he was sitting so close to Logan when he was so sure that Virgil knew already about his feelings.
It was obviously futile to try not to think too much about it when Virgil leaned closer to Logan halfway through their second episode. His head rested on Logan's shoulder, just barely touching it at first. When Logan didn't seem to object Virgil leaned against him fully, and Logan hesitantly wrapped an arm around his shoulder. It was nice, very nice, but he just couldn't help but feel embarrassed. Why was it so difficult to contain his feelings?
When the credits for the episode appeared on screen neither of them made a move to turn on the next episode. They stayed there, sitting together silently until the credits ended and they were left in total silence. Logan finally found himself actually relaxing a little bit. It was warm, quiet, and nice. He wished he could get used to this.
"Think we'll win?" Virgil spoke suddenly, catching Logan off guard.
"Sorry?" He asked, keeping his voice soft just as Virgil had.
"The competition. Do you think we'll win?" Virgil asked again, tilting his head from where it rested on Logan's shoulder to look up at him. Logan hoped the way his breath caught in his throat as he realized how close they were wasn't obvious.
"I-uh, well, I mean I hope so. We spent quite a bit of time working on our decorations. I think we have a decent chance." Logan answered, forcing himself to look straight ahead and not at Virgil, face turning a darker shade of red after stumbling over his words.
Virgil hummed in acknowledgment, not seeming to notice Logan's awkwardness, which he was thankful for. Logan felt him shrug, glancing over at him.
"If I'm being honest," Virgil muttered, meeting Logan's eyes. Logan couldn't look away. "I don't really care whether or not we win anymore."
"What do you mean?" Logan questioned, barely able to find his voice. He was more focused on the dark brown color that Virgil's eyes were. He was sure he had never seen brown eyes as beautiful as his.
"I mean... well, I do hope we win. It would be nice to beat Roman, and just to get recognition for the work we put into it." He began to explain. "But... I'm really just happy that I've gotten to spend time with you. I'm really glad that we met, and that we've gotten to know each other."
There was a pause between them, Virgil glancing away from Logan and breaking eye contact for only a moment. His cheeks were a dark red, just like Logan knew his were. "Sorry, that's cheesy and dumb. But I do mean it."
"I don't find it dumb," Logan assured him, arm still wrapped around him squeezing just a little to further comfort him. "I feel the same way, Virgil. You are a very good friend of mine. Of course my time spent with you means more to me than winning does."
"I'm glad you feel the same," Virgil muttered, even softer than they had already been speaking. It fell silent between the two again, both of them still facing each other. Logan caught Virgil's eyes darting down, glancing very briefly at his lips before quickly looking back up. He started to shift away from Logan, but stopped when Logan leaned the slightest bit forward.
Virgil stared at him, eyes wide and unsure. Then he glanced back down, and slowly started to lean closer as well. Just as their lips were an inch apart, when they were about to actually kiss, Virgil paused. Noticing the change Logan paused too, and a moment later Virgil completely moved away from him. He stood suddenly, taking a step back from the couch as they both looked in opposite directions to think about what had just almost happened.
Virgil was silently berating himself for thinking of trying something like that, told himself he was imagining it if he thought there was any way Logan could like him. Logan meanwhile, was wondering what had caused Virgil to stop. Did he do something? Was it his fault? Was he imagining it? Then, why was Virgil so embarrassed too?
"I, uh..." Virgil spoke up and brought both of them out of their thoughts. "Sorry."
"You haven't done anything you need to apologize for." Logan reassured him softly, trying to meet Virgil's eyes again. Virgil wouldn't look at him.
"It's getting late." He said, ignoring Logan's comment entirely. "I think I should get home, and get some sleep. We have to be up early for Patton's party."
Logan opened his mouth, searching for something, anything to say to convince him to stay a while longer. He decided it was best not to push him, though. "Alright... If that is what you want to do."
"It is," Virgil said too quickly, still not meeting Logan's eyes and flushing a dark red. "I'll um... see you tomorrow, then."
Logan didn't even get the chance to say anything before Virgil had made it to the door, saying goodbye one final time before he left. Logan stared after him, mind trying to catch up with everything that had just happened.
"Yes," he muttered, mind already racing with worried thoughts about what their next meeting would be like after tonight. Were they going to ignore this forever now? "See you tomorrow..."
