Nine
Chris reacted faster than you could process the information. He protectively put his arms around you and squeezed them so tightly that you had to press Rose closer to your chest.
A small cry escaped her small lips and feet tried to kick you. But even though you wanted to be gentle you didn't let the baby loose.
Together, Chris and you held the baby in your arms, protected by your bodies. For a brief moment you could look into his eyes, a feeling chased through your chest.
For a second it felt like time stood still.
Then the air tore.
All at once a powerful pressure seized you and wanted to tear you apart, but Chris' strong arms held you pressed against his broad self. Breathing heavily, he held you tightly as you were hurled through the air, from one wall of the van to the other.
A painful gasp escaped him as his back hit the wall of metal.
The car tilted, everything was spinning.
Rose was crying. Her screaming filled your ears and drove your heart to beat wildly with fear. Hopefully nothing would happen to her.
In the next moment, you could feel something grabbing and tearing you backwards.
"Redfield!", you yelled as he couldn't hold you any longer and you and Rose were thrown through the back door of the van.
Your weight, mixed with the immense force that lifted the vehicle off the road, were so inhuman that the lock in the door broke and it swung open.
He still tried to reach for your hand, but his body was so paralyzed by the pain that he could hardly move.
"(Y/N)!", he shouted, his voice trembling.
Sweat was shimmering on his forehead and he looked like he was looking into the eyes of death.
As his eyes widened in surprise you knew there was something waiting that he had not wanted to face.
With narrowed eyes, you curled up, wanting to protect the baby with your all. The impact was as hard as stone, despite the huge snow.
A sharp pain chased through your back, the feeling of breaking bones filled your body and brought tears to your eyes. It was like nothing you had ever felt before.
Shivering and with Rose in your arms, you slid a few meters through the snow. The feeling of cold and wetness embraced your body and made it unbearable to stay lying down.
For a moment, the feeling inside your legs disappeared and you felt like dying.
But even though your body was shaking with pain, you immediately jumped up. The soldier inside of you was screaming now, demanding to do as you were ordered. Fighting was your only task now.
Your hand reached for the pistol on your leg. You ripped it out of the holster, the mechanism clicked and the safety released.
With a sweeping motion you spun around, your finger twitched and the trigger bent.
But at the very moment your eyes connected with those of the being standing opposite you, you began to tremble.
Why?
Why did you hesitate?
Never before had your body hesitated to resist. You had never refused an order. Years of killing had passed you without leaving a mark.
So why couldn't your finger pull the trigger at that moment?
It was just a monster.
The thing standing in front of you was not a woman. It was a monster, a being made of fungi and viruses, bred to fulfill the purpose of warfare.
But as her strange eyes locked with yours, your heart skipped a beat.
"(Y/N)!", Chris voice cut through the storm inside your head.
Tens, your head snapped back. Your eyes locked with his.
He had his hand stretched out to you, the look on his face was begging for you to run to him.
The other members of the crew were already aiming at the attacker.
Moving on their own, your legs turned around. But before you turned to run towards safety, you fired the first shot.
The bulled priced the eye of the woman, giving you a safe second to turn around and run.
"Aim for the head!", you screamed and threw yourself on the ground.
The sound of bullets filled the air.
Rose screamed.
Chris called your name.
The world seemed to change, suddenly everything sounded dull and far away as if you were breathing under water.
The pain ate into your body and made it impossible to move. A little further away from you Chris stretched out his hands. He was armed, but instead of fighting he dedicated himself to Safe the child.
At least you though so.
In his eyes gleamed the will to survive, as a soldier was trained to. But there was also something else. Worry. He feared that the mission would fail.
He feared everything had been for nothing.
Trembling, you tried to push Rose to Chris with your last bit of remaining strength, but a foot appeared out of nowhere and stepped on your hands. It felt like your arms would break under the weight.
A sharp cry escaped your lips.
You dropped the baby in the snow, tears filling your eyes.
The screams of the baby grew louder. She was able to feel the danger that was everywhere around. Fear had corrupted her tiny little heart and she cried as if it could safe her life.
It couldn't, as the woman reached down and grabbed the little thing with her strangely black hand.
Suddenly everything was silent again. There were no more shots, no more screams, and no more of the frenzy you knew from a fight.
Everything was silent.
Deadly quiet.
Was it over?
Breathing heavily, your head tilted forward, while an exhausted sigh slipped through your lips. Your eyes twisted and you could hardly breathe.
Your body felt like it was on fire.
As the blackness swallowed the world, the last thing you could hear was Chris' voice calling your name.
"Redfield...", you mumbled, hoping he was able to keep the fear inside you calm.
