Chapter one: Xaver
Xaver groaned as the sunlight drifted across his eyes, lighting up the back of his eyelids a bright pink. He turned to his side with his wings covering his head, ready to go back to sleep, but the world had other plans...
"Xaver, time to get up! Your first lessons are today" Xavers father called from the main hollow of there tree, his voice bright and peppy. 'Why does this place get up so early!?' Xaver thought, his six year old voice complaining to himself as he got up, his body heavy with sleep. Xaver dragged himself from his room and into the living room, his eyes reflecting his mood; heavy and tired. "Come on; you don't want to be late!" Johnathan said with a smile as Xaver stretched, his body warming up for the day. Xavers golden eyes looked at his father as his body fully woke up, a smile on his tiny beak. "Breakfast is served" Johnathan told Xaver as he gave him a small but ripe mango, the fruit looking succulent in the bright room. "Thank you papa!" Xaver exclaimed happily as he took the mango into his talons, ready to dig in. When Xaver took his first bite, his taste buds sang from the sweet juice of the fruit. Within a matter of minutes, father and son were done eating.
"Ready to go?" Johnathan asked after he tossed away the stems. "Yes sir!" Xaver told his father, his body seeming to generate enough energy for a hyper active child. "Alright; let's fly!" Johnathan said, a look of deep seriousness on his face, one that made Xaver laugh every time his father did that. Johnathan took off through the entry point of there hollow with a single beat of his wings, Xaver following him with energy to burn.
Father and son flew through the jungle towards Xavers teachers tree, a young lady named Lisa who simply loves children. Lisa had offered to teach Xaver when he turned six years old the basics of jungle survival. Xaver had met Lisa twice before, and he had taken a liking to her the instant he saw her.
"Ready for your lessons?" Johnathan asked as they flew, a grin on his face. Xaver hesitated slightly before he answered. "I am, but I am just nervous. Isn't she supposed to have another child with her?" Xaver asked. Johnathan thought about it for a moment before answering in the affirmative. "Why do you ask?" Johnathan asked. "I was just wondering about it, that's all" Xaver answered, his face bearing a smile of confidence but his insides were shaking with nerves. With a knowing smile, Johnathan told him that he would be fine.
They reached the teachers hollow soon after, a towering tree that had multiple rooms for her lessons, from medical to survival skills. Lisa was outside her hollow with a little girl, the child's eyes shining like stars while Lisa's were filled with warmth like that of a mother. "There you are!; I was afraid that you would not show up!" Lisa said; at first Xaver thought she was serious, but the way she said it Xaver knew she was joking.
Xaver stood there silent before my father gave him a small tap on the shoulder, silently telling him to introduce himself to the other child, a curious sparkle in her eyes. "M-my name is X-xaver" our protagonist stuttered, his body shaking with nerves at meeting someone new. "Nice to meet you. My name is Clarissa" the girl introduced, a small smile on her petite beak, her periwinkle face lit up with inner laughter. Xavers light blue face flushed with embarrassment, but he knew he could not help but laugh, causing her to laugh as well, a light and musical sound.
"Great! Now that you know each other, let the adults talk; you two can go play, but stay within earshot okay?" Lisa requested. "Yes ma'am!" Clarissa and Xaver chorused as they took off, but not to far away in case they called for them. "So, um, what do you want to do?" Xaver asked Clarissa as they flew to a wide tree branch, some Brazil nuts hanging above it. "Why, we are going to eat these!" Clarissa said as she waved towards said nuts, a eager smile on her face.
Xaver took a nervous step back as Clarissa snipped a nut off its stem. Clarissa broke open the shell and began to munch on the food, her eyes lighting up at the flavor. She was half way done with the seed when she noticed Xavers down cast look. "Do you want some? I don't mind sharing" Clarissa said as she moved to pass the nut to Xaver.
Xaver recoiled back, as if she were offering him poison. "I can't eat them; I'm allergic to them" Xaver told her as he fell backwards; he tripped on a raised indention on the branch. Clarissa couldn't help but laugh in her head; Xaver had a dazed look on his face, his eyes scrunched shut. "You okay?" Clarissa asked as she helped Xaver up with a wing. "I'm fine, thanks" Xaver told her as he looked into her eyes. Something must have been strange about them because Clarissa screamed, her food long since forgotten.
Within a matter of seconds Lisa and Johnathan were there, worried looks on there faces. "What happened?" Lisa exclaimed as Clarissa hid behind her, Clarissa's body shaking. "H-his eyes... they changed!" Clarissa said, fear in her voice. Xaver turned toward the adults, a clearly confused look on his face. "What? I don't feel different" Xaver told them, oblivious to his change. The adults looked at each other before slowly looking back at Xaver, their eyes wide with surprise. "Xaver, follow us; you need to see them for yourself" Johnathan told Xaver as he took off in flight, the other three birds following suit.
The children flew in silence behind the adults, whom were having a hushed conversation about Xavers change; Xaver heard every word. "My wife knew he would be different, but this... is ridiculous! How can his eyes change, especially to that color?" Johnathan asked. "I don't know. From all of my years of healing, I have never seen or even heard of that happening. After you pick him up, I'll go to the other healers and ask them about it" Lisa told Johnathan.
When they stopped talking, Xaver realized why; they were close to a river. Everyone landed by the edge of the stream, but Xaver was the only one that moved forward towards the water, his heart beating heavily in his chest. When he was close to the river, he took a deep breath before he leant forward, his stomach hitting the ground at want he saw.
His eyes were a dark red while the outside of his eyes were purple, a terrifying clash of colors. The worst part though was that his eyes were slitted like those of a snake. Xaver stood there in silence, to shocked to speak or move.
Johnathan was the first one to move. He moved to comfort his son, something that every loving father would have done if their son was in that situation. Xaver recoiled away from his fathers touch, tears gathering in his eyes as he looked away. "Why did this happen?" Xaver asked, his now red eyes letting lose there tears, adding to the water in the river. There was a moment of silence before Johnathan said he didn't know. "We will get through this, together" Johnathan promised as he out his wing around his son in a comforting sort of way; Xaver hugged his father as he cried.
"We can start lessons tomorrow" Lisa told the father and son before she left with Clarissa, most likely to take her home. "Come on son; let's go home" Johnathan said. Snuffling, Xaver nodded. "Get on my back; I'll fly you home" Xavers father said. That instantly made Xaver smile; he loved it when his father gave him rides! Xaver climbed onto his fathers back and held on with his wings as Johnathan extended his wings. "I going to show you why I was called the Blue Wind in my day!" Johnathan proclaimed as he took off, his wings beating powerfully. Xaver shouted with excitement as they flew through the jungle, oblivious to a great danger that was closer than he thought.

Somewhere underground
"Master, the child has begun to change" a red macaw said as he bowed to a entity covered in shadow. "Perfect. Let's see what... abilities he will have before we convert him" the being said, his steel colored eyes flashing dangerously as he laughed a laugh that would scare the devils core.
