The Zipline- 87

You rush over, all of them looking up at you.

"Y/N!" Uriah says, beaming at you. He grabs your arm and pulls you into the group of Dauntless. "Exactly the initiate I wanted to see. Want to get out of here?"

"Come on, we've got to hurry," he says, answering for you as the Dauntless start down one of their tunnels. "It's an initiation ritual!"

You jog next to him and Tris.

"They only usually let the initiates with older siblings in Dauntless come," he confesses, then grins a mischievous smile. "But they might not even notice. Just act like you belong!"

"What are we doing?" Tris asks, breathless as she keeps up with you, and you suddenly wonder if you should have grabbed the rest of the group. It's too late for that now, though.

"What's the STIFF doing here?" a boy with a nose ring whines. Hey, at least he didn't complain about you. No one except Peter seems to mind that you were supposedly Amity anymore, which is pretty refreshing.

"She just saw that guy get stabbed in the eye, give her a break," Uriah retorts, and you run into a pack of Dauntless. One grins at you, pushing you forward, and you open a door into a stairwell.

"Well? Up!" he says, and you race up, sprinting so they won't catch up to you. Their laughter echoes through the stairwell, injecting raw anticipation into your veins.

A door is open, pure daylight filtering through, and you step forward, the sound of the train's familiar whistle surging through your blood. You waste no time, jogging with it and slinging yourself in with a gleeful yell. The train picks up speed, and you maneuver over to sit next to Tris and Uriah.

"Where are we going?" Tris shouts, the wind stealing her voice and whipping your hair every which way.

Uriah shrugs, making a wide-eyed face. "Zeke never told me!"

"Zeke?"

"Older brother," he explains, pointing to a boy sitting with his legs dangling out the car. He looks at peace, eyes closed, but it's an adrenaline-filled kind of peace, like the feeling you get before a performance you're prepared for.

"You don't get to know. That would ruin the surprise!" The girl on Tris's left shouts, extending her hand to Tris, then you. "I'm Shauna!"

"Y/N!" You say, shouting over the train with a wide grin.

"I'm-" Tris starts, but Shauna cuts her off.

"Yeah, Four told me about you," she says, nodding with a grin. "And you too, Amity kid."

You bark a laugh, shrugging. "What can I say? I invite conversation."

Uriah snorts at that, and Shauna jumps to her feet.

"Here we go!" she shouts, throwing herself out of the car. The others follow in a stream of black, leaping, jumping, whooping.

The train is going faster than you're used to, but you jump off, smacking into the ground with an oomph and going for a roll. You jog to catch up with the rest of the Dauntless, and recognize where you are. The Hub is far behind you, the buildings silent. This is the abandoned part of the city. You know it well, and pray that no one recognizes you and blows your cover.

"The Hancock Building," Tris breathes, pointing to a giant black pillar with crisscrossed girders. It's immense, huge. The pace picks up, and you realize that the Dauntless have started to run. You bolt after them, jostling each other with your elbows. They push through the doors at the base of the building, crunching broken glass and pressing the button for the elevator.

"The elevator?" you say, surprised. "I thought Dauntless took the stairs."

"I turned on the generator," Zeke says proudly, butting into the conversation. "Besides, you can't climb as high as we're going."

You pile into the elevator with the others, and Tris scuffles with a girl with a shaves head.

"What floor?" the girl asks, examining her nails.

"One hundred," Tris says.

"How would you know that?"

Tris rolls her eyes. "We're in a one-hundred-story abandoned building with some Dauntless. Why don't you know that?"

She jams her thumb onto the right button.

The elevator zooms upward, and you reach out and grab onto Tris. She grabs onto you, eyes crinkling, and you both laugh quietly as the numbers climb, the elevator finally shuddering to a stop.

Whoosh. A strong wind hits you, blowing away the elevator tension and opening into a beautiful, soft orange sunset through a hole. Zeke props up a ladder, and you climb wondrously, staring up into the orange evening sky. You can't hear much outside the wind as you pop up, the marsh and the city spread below you like a gray tarp.

Uriah points, and you tear yourself away long enough to notice a thick steel cable wrapped around a pole. On the ground is a pile of black slings that look rough to touch. Zeke grabs one, expertly hooking it up to a pully that hangs down from the steel cable. It descends down, through the city.

"Oh my gosh," Uriah says, and Tris nods, her mouth agape.

You're going to slide down the cable from one thousand feet up.

Shauna gets in the sling first, wriggling forward on her stomach under her body is supported by the fabric. She shoots you a thumbs-up and a grin as Zeke secures her, then pulls her to the top of the building. Your heart pounds.

"Five," Zeke tries, counting down. "Four, three, two... ONE!"

With that, he releases the fabric, Shauna screaming and hurtling forward, headfirst, until you can no longer see her.

The members whoop and pump their fists, scrambling to be next in line. Tris is way in front of you, right in front of Uriah. A newer members cheers and climbs in backwards, getting launched feet-first into the city air.

A couple initiates around you whisper among themselves, looking slightly pale. You feel a little scared, imagining the plunge in your stomach when you drop, but you can't stop the excitement shuddering up in you, the smile it surges to your face.

Then it's Tris's turn. You cup your hands to your mouth. "Go, Tris!" you shout, beaming. She looks all scrunched up in the harness, eyes fixed on the city below.

Sweat gathers in your palms as she hurtles down, your heart slamming against your chest, shivering.

"Your turn, Amity," Zeke says, gesturing to harness. You wriggle in, feeling your heartbeat against the fabric. He secures you in, and you take a deep breath, staring into the sunset.

"Ready," he says, "set... go!"

He releases you before he can say go, and you're hurtling forward, mouth parted in what's partially a scream and partially a cheer. The marsh zips towards you, browns and greens shocking towards you in a rush of cold air. A shout of exhilaration rises inside you, and you throw out your arms, spreading them like you're flying. You plunge towards the street, every vein, fiber, and nerve waking up, charged with electricity.

The ground grows, shivering as you bounce along the line.

"Pull the break!" someone yells, and you twist behind you, grabbing it and crowing for joy when it catches, and you slow to a stop, breathless, gasping, twenty feet above a crowd of clapping and shouting Dauntless members. They stretch out their hands and you drop, letting them catch you in a tangle of wristbones and forearms.

"What'd you think?" Shauna asks, clapping you on the shoulder. You can hear Tris laughing somewhere behind you, and a laugh bubbles up to you, as well.

"That was amazing!" you cheer, and they all shout. "When can I go again?"

"There he is!" Someone shouts, pointing to the next initiate, hurtling down towards you. You jump into the human net, offering your wrist and arm as he tumbles down.

You and Tris still smell like wind when you burst into the dining hall, laughing as the Dauntless crowd breaks apart.

1+ Tris
