Fear Landscape- 121
The glass ceiling moves closer and closer, daylight shimmering through the dance on your face and dazzle your eyes. Four stomps onto a set of metal stairs, and Tris scrambles up after him, crawling through a hole in the metal ceiling.
You wriggle through, careful not to scrape yourself, and heave yourself up onto the glass ceiling. The Pit and the Chasm are beneath you, and a fit of vertigo possesses you. You shudder, stumbling forward, feet picking across the glass as you follow Four. Finally, you cross into another door, which leads into a huge space with graffitied walls and exposed pipes.
The first thing you notice is the dank, rotten smell that pervades this place like a chill. You wrap your arms around yourself and shiver.
"This," Four says, eyes bright in pale light, "is a different kind of simulation, known as the fear landscape. It has been disabled for our purposes, so this isn't what it will be like next time you see it."
Behind him, the word "DAUNTLESS" is spray-painted in red artistic lettering on the concrete wall.
"Through your simulations, we have stored data about your worst fears. The fear landscape accesses that data and presents you with a series of virtual obstacles. Some of these obstacles will be fears you previously faced in your simulations. Some may be new fears. The difference is that you are aware, in the fear landscape, that it is a simulation, so you will have all your wits about you."
You sigh a breath of relief, hugging yourself tighter. That sounds better. That will be better.
Four continuous. "The number of fears in your landscape varies depending on how many fears you have. This stage requires you to control both your emotions and your body- to combine the physical elements of stage one with the emotional mastery of stage two. Next week, you will go through your fear landscape as quickly s possible in front of a panel of Dauntless leaders. That will be your final test, which determines your ranking for stage 3, which is weighted heaviest of them all. Understood?"
You all nod, but you don't feel relieved. Your whole landscape? Your biggest fears, in front of a panel of the Dauntless leaders? Four and Peter are arguing, and it looks heated, but you can't bring your swimming vision to focus on it. All you can think about is the landscape, the leaders, and the test.
Will you make it? Will you be Dauntless?
You are quiet the whole walk back, and when you get to the dorm, things are even more tense.
Al sits on his bed, looking shell-shocked. Tris and her crew are tightly huddled together, glaring and whispering in hushed tones. Peter is glaring at the wall, fists tightly clenched.
If you talk to Al, go to 122.
If you talk to Tris and her group, go to 123.
If you talk to Peter, go to 124.
If you just go to bed to get some rest before tomorrow, go to 125.
