"Dr. Hart?" Logan called out, looking around the morgue for the coroner.
"Logan? Is that you?" Patton came rushing out of the freezer, an excited grin on his face. Logan descended into the morgue to meet him halfway.
Patton threw off his apron, tossing it on his operating table, before throwing his arms around the detective. "This is a surprise, it's after working hours."
Logan didn't hug Patton back, though. But regardless of that, he felt his heart beat just a little bit faster, and his head feel just a little bit airier. He tried to keep his mind grounded, though. He was here for a reason. Patton awkwardly detached himself from Logan after a moment. He brushed Logan's hair out of his face and looked into his eyes with concern. "Is everything okay?"
Logan pulled away, leaving Patton looking a little hurt. But, that expression quickly changed to one of confusion and panic as Roman and two other constables entered the morgue, guns drawn. "Dr. Hart... I need you to put your hands up." Roman said, sadness in his eyes.
Patton did what he was told immediately. He stood still, but he whipped his head to look back at Logan with fearful eyes. "L-Logan? What's going on?"
Roman made eye contact with the detective over Patton's shoulder, before gripping his wrists and pulling them down behind his back. He silently asked one of the other policemen for the handcuffs.
"Dr. Patton Hart," Logan said. "You are under arrest for the murder of Virgil Sanders."
Patton's eyes went wide. "W-Wait! Wait no! It wasn't me, I didn't do it!"
Roman secured the cuffs with a click. "You need to come with us, doctor." Roman said quietly.
Patton struggled as the other two constables gripped his arms tightly. "What are you doing?! Logan please I didn't... I would n-never..!" He pleaded, fighting pointlessly against the hands pulling him toward the door. Tears pricked his eyes. "Logan, you have to stop them! Logan please!"
But, all Logan did was avert his eyes.
Patton watched Logan with a horror that was as though he was watching his heart shatter before his eyes. He crumpled, starting to cry. He stopped fighting, and Roman watched as the other two police officers dragged the former coroner from the morgue.
"Well... we did it, sir." Despite the positivity of the words, Roman's tone was quiet and flat. Almost mournful.
Logan kept his eyes away. "I-Indeed."
"Sir, are you...?" Roman looked over at the detective.
Logan wiped a stray tear from his cheek hastily. "No, I'm not."
Roman looked away. "Right."
The two stood in silence for a moment, before Roman spoke up into the echoey silence.
"He'll hang, you know."
Logan almost winced at the thought of Patton's head in a noose. He let out a shaky breath. "Mhm."
Roman nodded at nothing in particular, before looking downward at the cold floor.
"Do you believe he did it?" He asked, quiet as a whisper.
Detective Logan Christie's gaze drifted to the doorway that Patton had just been escorted, the sound of Patton's screams of his name echoed in his ears.
"What else is there to believe?"
