Virgil knew that look in Logan's eyes. Logan wanted to go back. He refused to fail. But he knew that Virgil's presence would be so much better for Patton. So without a word, Virgil stood.
"No, Virgil, you don't have to go. I will," Logan quickly spoke up, getting to his feet as well.
"You weren't fast enough. Each second wasted sitting around here could be spent helping him. Besides, your face isn't exactly one he enjoys seeing often. He kinda thinks you hate him," Virgil said honestly. Instantly, his brain screamed at him, telling him that he should not have said that at all. It just kind of slipped out.
But Virgil didn't take it back. He began the short trek to his "dad's" room. As he walked, his feet slowly filled up with lead. His footsteps slowed to a halt. He couldn't make himself move.
What if Patton didn't forgive him for pushing him away? Virgil had clearly seen the hurt in his eyes earlier when he tried to comfort him. He was just doing what a good father should do: check up on his son. And Virgil had yelled at him. Oh how he regretted what he said.
It was at this point that Virgil wanted a time machine. So that he could go back and fix this. Go back and not come out of his room to see Deceit. Go back and be kinder to Patton. Maybe tell him what he and Deceit were arguing about. Or maybe he could have made up for his mistake by helping Patton make breakfast. He just wished he could have done something. Anything! Anything that wasn't what he had already done.
Virgil still couldn't move though.
Patton is losing himself in there. You have to save him.
But what if he doesn't want to see me?
When has he ever not wanted to see you?
I...
Exactly. Now get in there and cheer him up! It's the least you could do! He's done it for you so many times. Pay him back.
Virgil sighed heavily. His shoulders slouched forward. But even through the flooding guilt, he couldn't make himself move.
Then he saw a familiar white outfit and red sash approach him. "Virgil?"
Virgil lifted his head to see Princey standing in front of him. Oh thank goodness! Someone to save him!
"Roman!" Roman flinched. Virgil has never been this excited to see him. Ever. "Hey, um..." Roman raised an eyebrow. That mood switch was almost instant.
"Yeah...?" Roman pressed carefully.
Virgil shook his head. "Nevermind. It's stupid. I should be going."
"No, no," Princey waved his hands in front of him. "Please, fill me in. What's up?"
"I..." Virgil sighed. "I was wondering if you could do me a favor. To spare my anxiety, I guess. But it's dumb. I shouldn't have a problem with it anyways. I just-"
"Virgil, slow down," Roman blinked. "Just tell me what you need and I'll see if I can help."
Virgil's shoulders slouched again. "Logan's... encounter with Patton didn't go too well. So I told him I would go and check on him instead, but... what if he doesn't want to see me either? What if he kicks me out of his room? I mean, Patton's in a pretty unstable position right now. What if he gets hurt? Or what if I can't help him? Or what if-"
"Virgil, stop doing that to yourself," Roman demanded in a stern voice. "The only thing you're doing is prolonging the inevitable. Now, I'm assuming you want me to go instead of you, correct?" Virgil nodded. "Well, who do you want it to be? You or me?"
