Chapter 123

You've chosen to do nothing!

Dear Reader,

I find that most people, including myself, often choose to do nothing for the worst of reasons.

We choose to do nothing because we think we will regret acting on the choices presented to us, especially if you must choose between two bad choices.

We choose to do nothing because we do not want to take an unnecessary risk. To some people, the choice of simply reaching out to help another person is considered a risk because of the impact that may take on our reputation with others. To some people, the idea of talking to someone in a time of need is a risk because we do not understand their pain or do not have the words/experiences necessary to alleviate it.

We choose to do nothing because we are scared. We fear deeper answers because they may bring out the most bruised parts in us. We fear announcing new things about ourselves to the world because we are creatures that constantly subject ourselves to change and we don't know how our world will push back. We fear confronting the people we care about because we don't want to lose them, even if they are no good to our well-being. We fear showing the wounded parts of ourselves because we don't want to be taken as a lesser person who is capable of being taken advantage of.

No one is immune to these things.

Therefore, it is my opinion that it's always worse to choose to do nothing rather than to make most other choices because when you choose to do nothing, you almost always lose an opportunity. That opportunity could be a chance at a relationship (whether platonic or otherwise), a chance at learning from the world around us, and, most importantly, a chance at knowing and loving yourself.

And now you, the reader, have also chosen to do nothing, which means in turn that both you and Logan will miss out on an opportunity to find out what happens next.

Now, because this is a choice-based book, you could always go back to your previous decision before you even finished reading this paragraph and choose another answer. But I want you to remember that, much like in real life, Logan cannot. He must live with his decision to do nothing and suffer the consequences of that decision, just like any other choice. And the consequences of that decision vary on the ones before it.

Logan may never grow any form of relationships with his roommates. He may never get the opportunity to watch the first stars light up the sky, to know the dull throb of a hangover, or the feeling of relief that comes with whispering your feelings in the confined spaces of your room and allowing them to get louder and louder until other people can't help but hear them.

At the end of the day, that's what I find that people who are running low on time regret the most. We hurt the most for what could have been. So, if you learn anything from my catastrophic part in this book, I hope it hits home the idea to never choose to do nothing, especially about the things that are vital to your happiness in this world.

Sincerely,

The Mechanics of Living
