The Double Rainbow Cocktail sounds like something out of the Wizard of Oz, but that doesn't stop Logan from placing an order as the bartender in front of him makes his way around the bar, stealthily checking to see if there are some people that needed to be restricted to water or going to far with their liquid courage on the gender of their choice. He deems Logan not to be one of these people, as Logan is the only one whose is taking a seat at the bar only to read a book on the Kindle he brought, so he continues to make the drink.
The drink is made with vodka, St. German elderflower liqueur, soda water, and grapefruit bitters, so it isn't something he would imagine taste good, but he doesn't think it's supposed to do that (provided it isn't a super fruity drink, of course). He breathes out a short thank you as the bartender puts the glass on a cup holder in front of him before pulling it towards himself and taking a sip. He winces a little at the taste before pulling away, inspecting the rainbow-colored ice and the yellow stars made from what seemed to be lemon peels separated from him by the glass.
His parents probably wouldn't like the idea of him drinking a rainbow drink at a college bar, where anything could happen, but he didn't allow himself the time to write down the positive and negatives of buying it.
His parents didn't have a bad reaction to his "coming out". On the contrary, when he thinks of his coming out, he sees a 17-year old boy curled up in a ball on the couch while his parents tell him about his family members' sexuality. So, one would think that to be a comforting notion for the future, but the truth was that his sexuality still tended to be a roadblock in their family's partnership.
For example, when he was asked about coming out to his family members, he shrugged and said that he would come out when he was ready, thinking this would be the end to a 5-minute conversation. It ended up being a thirty-minute conversation revolving around talking to his uncles and aunts about coming out to his younger cousins and suppressing the idea of sexuality around his Christian grandmother because the idea of him being intimate with another guy is enough to make her sick. To this day, he hasn't talked to "come out" to any other members of his family willingly, though it makes him sick to think that one day he will bring his partner to a family gathering and an unforeseen variable will cause a carefully constructed plan to explode.
Logan knew he was one of the lucky ones. There were some people like him that were walking down the street right now, unable to afford the future they had been promised as they scavenge the trash can for glass bottles they could take to the recycling center and sleep under blue tents by the side of the road. There were some people like him that live in mind palaces, where their family members can easily regulate the information that comes in and out of the castle walls. There are some people like him who hurt themselves because of their sexuality and/or gender. There are some people like him who lock their sexuality in bulletproof boxes under the ground to save themselves from the bullets. That didn't stop him from wanting more from his family, from wanting them to ask what boy they liked or referring to his non-binary friend Joan in their correct pronouns.
However, at this point, Logan had to take what he could get. He couldn't make a person change their ways if they don't want to, and the knife his emotions used to inflict empathy upon his parents often ended up cutting him instead. He sighed before drinking from the glass once more. The taste wasn't nearly as terrible as it was the last time, perhaps because he was more prepared for it as he read the first words on the work he was reading.
