Logan sat at his desk, reviewing evidence into Virgil's murder once again. But, he wasn't really focusing. His mind was elsewhere. And all over the place, actually. He couldn't believe that he'd been so close to the real killer, and he'd let him just slip through his fingers.

Not only that, but he couldn't believe he'd let him escape over a kiss.

He had kissed him! What was that supposed to mean? It was probably just to distract Logan so that he could escape. Also, to be fair, Logan had been pinned against a wall. What exactly was he supposed to have done in that situation?

Well, he could've at least taken the opportunity to get a good look at the murderers face. A conclusive one. Which Logan could've done if he hadn't closed his eyes.

Wait.

Why did he close his eyes?

His thoughts were interrupted by Roman's voice. "Sir! I looked--" Roman suddenly stopped himself mid-sentence. Logan looked up just in time to see the constable step back outside, and close the door. Roman then raised his hand, and knocked on the door.

Logan would've laughed, except that the noisiness of his thoughts withheld him from it. "Come in, Roman."

Roman stepped inside. "Sir! I looked into the name you asked me to. Cain?"

Logan had forgotten about that. "Oh, yes. Have you found anything?"

Roman nodded, looking rather proud of himself. "Yes I did, sir! Turns out that Cain is a man from the bible."

"Oh?" Logan had never been religious, so he hadn't really expected the name to have come from the bible. But, he supposed that it made sense. It was a common text that anyone in the whole city would have access to, and based on what he learned about Cain last night, he prided himself on being smart. It seemed just like him to make a biblical reference within his name.

"Yessir. Cain was the son of Adam. He and his younger brother, Abel, both made offerings to God. God decided that he favoured Abel's, and rejected Cain's. As a result, Cain ended up killing his brother." Roman explained.

Logan's mind started whirring. Then things started to click into place. He leapt to his feet with such vigour that it made Roman jump a little. Logan sped over to his blackboard, and grabbed the chalk, quickly drawing a little map on a blank section of blackboard.

The map was a sort of tiny family tree, with the name "Adam" on the top, connected to two other names: "Cain" and "Abel".

"What are you doing, sir?"

"Think about it, Roman. The murderer clearly chose the name Cain for a reason. It has to be significant."

Roman nodded apprehensively. "Okay..."

"You say Cain from the bible murdered Abel? His brother?"

"That's right, sir."

"So, let's say that our killer also used this bible analogy to represent the others involved in the case."

"Okay." Roman said, trying to follow along.

"That would make Virgil the same person as Abel, right? Because he was the one who was killed?"

"Right."

Logan wrote Virgil's name underneath Abel's on the blackboard. Then, he turned back to Roman, his mind working quickly.

"Patton--uh, I mean Dr. Hart told me that Virgil was like a son to him." Logan said. "If the killer knew this, that would make Dr. Hart the equivalent of Adam. The father. Not Cain." Logan added Patton's name to the board, but underneath "Adam" this time.

"So... who's Cain, then?"

Logan flushed a little. "Well... I uh, I had a run in with the culprit last night and--"

"You what!?"

Logan raised his hand, telling Roman that this wasn't the time. His was deep in thought, and his concentration couldn't be broken. "I caught a very brief look at his face before he..." Logan hesitated. "Before he disappeared."

"And?"

"Well, I was almost sure that it was the face of Daemon White."

Roman frowned. "Daemon White?"

"He, Dr. Hart, and I all went to medical school together once."

"I see... Sir, that could explain why he wrote letters to you specifically. Because you and he used to be friends."

Logan nodded.

Roman sat down on the edge of Logan's desk, and braced himself on his hands. "But, sir, what does this have to do with Cain? The name, I mean?"

"Back when we were all close, the doctor used to refer to us as a family, and Daemon as his mysterious son."

Roman's eyes widened in understanding. "But if Daemon and Virgil were both called his children by Dr. Hart, that would make them..."

"Brothers." Logan finished for him.

Just then, Remus Kingsley came bursting in, the door clattered open loudly, starting both Roman and the detective.

"Remus!" Roman cried. "Don't you know how to knock?"

Logan looked at Roman, completely baffled. Remus rolled his eyes. "Sorry. I just wanted to come by to say that the inspector just left the station house."

"And why would we need to know this, Kingsley?" Logan asked, annoyed.

Remus shrugged and smirked. "Just thought it was interesting. He said he was off to make an arrest that you said you would do." Remus eyed Logan up and down.

Logan's chalk broke when it hit the floor. He had dropped it. He turned to Roman. The two made eye contact, their stomachs sinking in dread. Logan knew that they were both thinking the same thing.

Patton.
