Roman folded his arms behind his head with a quiet, discontent sigh. He studied the ceiling above him. Stone brick met stone brick between layers of tack. He squinted and glared threateningly at the stone, almost as if to dare it to fall down on him -
It wouldn't exactly be entirely terrible.
"Quite better than being betrothed," Roman scowled.
He had to force himself out of bed to simply grab a shirt from his bedside table, made up of carved oak wood - it had been discarded lazily the night before, him having refused any unnecessary help at all costs... he didn't need more of a reminder than that of which he already had.
Betrothed.
What a god awful word.
Roman shuttered at it as he slipped his shirt on over his broad shoulders.
He proceeded this new routine by tossing his buck skins to the side and throwing his legs over the side of the bed to stand up and stretch.
The prince let out a sigh as soon as he relaxed into a prince-like posture.
There came a knock from the double doors that led to Roman's chambers.
The prince groaned, debating on whether to respond or not.
"Y-Your Majesty?" A humble voice called.
Roman relaxed and went to the door, opening it slightly with a hum. "Patton?"
"You don't have to address me by my surname, your ma - "
"Yet I've told you to address me by mine, Patton," Roman frowned.
Patton sighed, "Well, yeah, I s'ppose so- just wanted to make sure - uh - Roman..."
"Progress," Roman sighed. "Not that it will make much of a difference after tonight," he stepped aside to allow Patton to enter.
Patton paused a moment before slipping in, Roman shutting one of the large doors behind him.
"I'm sure it won't be entirely bad," Patton offered a smile.
"It is entirely bad, Patton, I don't want to marry some snake of a prince from a neighboring kingdom. I should be allowed to - "
"Your father is being quite a bit lenient in allowing you to be-wed a prince in the first place..." Patton mumbled.
Roman cocked a threatening eyebrow.
Patton looked at his feet. "Apologies, your - "
"Roman."
" - I shouldn't have interrupted... "
"How would you feel if someone told you you couldn't love Logan because of some - some foolish destiny?" Roman scoffed.
Patton's face flushed red. "W-Well, I'd - " He paused. "You - Roman, you aren't in love are you? With someone else?"
Roman looked away.
Patton gasped before letting out a quiet squeal. "You are!"
Roman quickly slapped a hand over Patton's mouth and pushed him up against one of the near cobblestone walls. "Hush! If my father hears about - "
Patton brushed the hand carefully away from his face. "My lips are sealed."
Roman sighed and crossed his arms over his chest.
There was silence for a moment before Patton spoke up. "... Well?"
"Well, what?" Roman narrowed his gaze.
"Who's the lucky guy?" Patton beamed.
Roman looked away. "There isn't - "
"You just said - "
"Well, there is, it's just - "
"Who?" Patton pressed. "Come on, I - "
"Last month," Roman groaned. "I was in the woods, horseback riding - riding Crofters actually, it's how the poor girl got injured," The royal frowned along with Patton. "A snake bit her - sent her reeling back - naturally, I fell."
"Naturally."
"And I was going along the riding path when... I heard this godly music, and... I'm telling you, it was angelic - so I followed it to... to a nymph."
Patton gasped. "Really?"
Roman nodded. "I complimented him on his singing and - " He smiled with a quiet chuckle. "He turned into a tree..."
Patton giggled. "Well, you've got an interesting type then..."
Roman rolled his eyes. "I had to sit there for awhile until he seemed to get curious enough and - well, we began to talk, and... we've been doing so ever since - well, only four times so far... but I know I care for him far more than I care for - "
"What's his name?" Patton beamed.
"His name? Well, Vi - "
"Your highness!" A shrill voice rang.
"The maids," Patton sighed. "That's right! I came to tell you - they're on their way," He smiled sheepishly.
Roman groaned and looked around, panicked. "Too late now..."
"We've got your wedding attire, sir!" One the maids called cheerfully.
Patton looked panicked. "Y-You've got a duty to your kingdom - "
Roman nodded anxiously.
"A-And your heart," Patton fretted. "What are you going to choose?"
