This was the day Piper had be watching come for three months now. The last day of summer. Surely it’s not that big of a deal, she’s dealt with nine of them before. But this one was different, she felt it. Maybe it was because she woke up this morning at six o’clock because her step-brother was messing around with some really loud power tools in the room next door. Or maybe it’s because the new school she was going to walk in to tomorrow was over seventy years old. She really didn’t know why, but she felt different. Piper couldn’t really describe the feeling, but one word kept coming to her mind when she thought about it: ominous.
The day hadn’t been that eventful, considering it was the last day of summer. Piper had mostly spent the whole day packing and playing some Super Smash Bros. Since she just moved to the small town of Mythos, Piper had no friends (unless you counted her hyperactive step-brother Leo), and thus nothing to do. After playing the Wii for three hours, Piper threw her remote on the ground in frustration and stomped upstairs to her bedroom. She flopped onto her bed and pulled out her iPhone 6 and texted her friends back at home. Once she texted a simple hello, she locked her phone and dropped it back on her bed. Piper had never felt this nervous in her life. Sure, she had been to plenty of boarding schools before, but this one was different, it wasn’t in the wonderful sunshiney state of California but in the cold and harsh New York. And the rumors her friends back in Cali told her about the northeast state did not help Piper all.
She sat in silence daydreaming about her first day of school when she heard the rumbling of a power tool. Normally Piper wouldn’t mind, but she was stressed out enough, and she didn’t need extra noise to add to her migraine.
Piper left her room and banged on the door of her step-brother’s room. “Will ya keep it down in there! I have a huge headache!” She heard the power tool turn off. Then the door opened.
Leo’s room made Piper feel like she traveled back in time to the steampunk age of London. She didn't know the actual names of the steampunk inspired decorations, but she knew they walls were decorated with bronze cog type things and were lined with tools of all sorts. Leo had added a modern twist to the room with yellow Christmas lights were strung along the walls and ceiling. Right now Leo and his best friend Beckendorf was working on Leo's latest decoration: A bronze metal dragon named Festus that was planned to be hung from the ceiling.
Leo put down his power tool, “Sorry Pipes, we'll try to keep it down!"
Beckendorf looked up from his plans and at Piper, "But you've got to check it out, Festus' eyes are gonna glow red and his wings will actually move!" Piper had known Beckendorf ever since she had come to live with her mom. He was a buff dark-skinned guy with a strong passion for machinery just like Leo. Apparently the two of them had been practically brothers ever since Leo was eight.
“Are you guys going to bring Festus with you to school?" Piper knew it was a crazy question to ask, but Leo was a crazy person. He once messed with his P. E. coach's megaphone so everytime his coach talked it would say crazy things like "The cow goes moo" in Darth Vader's voice.
The two boys pondered on Piper’s question. "I don't know Piper, what do you think we should do, Beckendorf?"
"Well, I don't think the teachers will like it," Beckendorf replied with a smile creeping on to his face.
"Then I say we do it!" Leo began to roll up his blue-print. "Now I say we head to lunch, Beckendorf. There's a new Monster Doughnuts down the street. Thanks for the idea, Pipes." The two boys left the room, leaving Piper standing alone in the threshold.

"Transferred? What do you mean transferred?"
Jason Grace stood in the office of his supposed-to-be new school. The principal, Mr. Ramirez, was sitting behind a desk with a stack of papers in front of him.
“I'm sorry Jason, but this wasn't my decision! Mrs. Peacock, the administrator of the district, had decided to do a student-exchange program with our school and Half-Blood High." Mr. Ramirez got up from behind his desk and strolled over to his filing cabinet. "You have been selected to exchange schools."
Jason groaned in frustration, "But why me? And why are we doing this stupid exchange program?"
Mr. Ramirez sighed, "You've been chosen because I believe you would represent Jupiter Academy the best. And besides, Mrs. Peacock created the program to unite our schools. We've been in a rivalry for a long time." Mr. Ramirez grabbed a packet from the filing cabinet and handed it to Jason.
Jason stared down at the packet in confusion, "What's this?"
Mr. Ramirez sat back down behind the desk. "An informational packet about Half-Blood High and what role you'll play in uniting our schools."
Jason rose an eyebrow, "Schools?"
Mr. Ramirez chuckled, "Jason, we and Half-Blood High may be the only school with exchange students, but we're not the only schools participating in the uniting." Mr. Ramirez leaned back a little in his chair, but not too much to look casual. "Othrys Institute for Troubled Kids, Olympus Secondary School, and Lunar Prep are also participating in the program."
Jason shook his head, this couldn't be happening. "So tomorrow I'll enter Half-Blood High?"
"Not tomorrow, the second semester."
Now Jason was starting to get it. "So if I'm transferring to Half-Blood High, then who's going to take my place?"
Mr. Ramirez leaned in closer and stared at Jason more serious than ever and said, "Percy Jackson."
