The Secret of the Sweet Treats Kingdom by Kim Davis
The Secret of the Sweet Treats Kingdom by Kim Davis is the first book in The Board Game Chronicles. It features the story of Amber and Ava, two sisters with regular lives. Amber, the older sister, is not pleased with the fact that she has to miss her best friend's birthday party to watch over Ava. Things get worse as her little sister teases her for repeatedly losing the Sweet Treats board game. Out of rage, Amber destroys the board, unintentionally causing a strange vortex to transport them to the Kingdom of Sweet Treats. Ava, believed to be the "Golden One" by the kingdom's people, gets abducted right away by the evil queen, whose spell she is meant to break according to the legends. With no clue and limited help, it is up to Amber to rescue her little sister and return home safely.
Kim Davis' The Secret of the Sweet Treats Kingdom is an amazing treat. I picked up the book, allured by the fascinating title and synopsis, and I was not disappointed at all. Young readers are bound to be delighted by the kingdom of sweets. Kim has done a beautiful job of portraying the bittersweet relationship between the two sisters. I believe this is something children with siblings would be able to relate to. The way Amber's views on her family shift by the end is beautiful indeed, and it successfully reflects the theme of the story. I would recommend the book to children aged six to eight.
