Chapter 6

Zera

I looked at Cassian stunned. He blamed me? I could feel the anger rising in me, then I saw the movement of his hand. He was reaching for his knife. I glared and quickly took mine pressing it against his throat. I took his knife from him, "Go ahead do it, you won't! You don't have the damn guts to even try!" Cassian yelled practically spitting in my face.

"I won't kill you today, but I will never forgive you. You saved me, but you and you alone destroyed that place. You were so set on it. This has nothing to do with me. I don't care and I will let you die if given the chance. My job wasn't to kill, but to make you want to die. I will do that slowly to you. Very slowly." I seethed at him throwing his knife back to him. It sliced his upper leg and I smiled.

I turned to start walking again to hide the tears that were now coming down my cheeks. I was hurt. He may not have been as attached to the system as I was, but they protected me even when they knew I was up to something.

"You think I wanted to murder millions of people? You think that I was really that desensitized? No I wanted to end a dictatorship. I wanted to do something right for once. I guess I failed again. I always fuck it up don't I?" He was still angry, I could hear it in his voice, but I understood him in a way.

"I warned you that even if you tore down the system it wouldn't work. In the end you still would've ended up killing multiple people. Just came sooner rather than later." The pain I felt in my heart was real. The last time I felt like this was when I woke up. When I didn't know anything.

"Well it worked. There won't ever be another red suit right?" He started to laugh after what he said, tears still in his eyes. His insanity was so real. I couldn't kill him though I don't know why. Something kept me from killing this man. Maybe because in the end he did save me. I turned to him dried tears on my cheeks that I hadn't wiped away

"Then why not let me die with them?" I asked, "You had the chance to let me die, so why wouldn't you?' I walked a little closer to him. I needed an answer before I made a simple decision that may change my mind on this whole situation.

"Why? Well not that it matters, but I couldn't let someone like you continue to be tormented. In your sleep all you shouted was "stop, please stop" I couldn't let them be your end. Unlike me, you deserve to live." He said it as if he meant it and I slapped him again.

"Then make up your damn mind, because right now you wanted to kill me. You psychotic bastard." I kneeled down and opened a compartment on the side of my boot. I took out a picture of me and my family and threw it in front of him as the compartment closed. I turned and kept walking following the path thinking to myself. The events of this past few days have felt like months. Cassian caused me trouble. If I just hadn't stopped that fight. Putting my knife back in my holster I kept walking.

Cassian

"So who are you? Are you a murderer, or someone who actually wants to help? You decide." She was quite for a moment. "So what's your choice? We don't have all day"

I got up and dusted myself off. " First off, we kinda do. Second, fine I'll help you. Promise me one thing though. That you won't be afraid to kill me if I go bad, understand? I don't want to hurt anyone, not anymore."

"I'll do it. Without hesitating."

"Then let's keep walking. Or I'll stab you." Her face went blank. "Just kidding, but seriously, we gotta keep going, or we will die out here". She murmured something, probably a curse, and followed. Three days later we made it.

The first sign was something green. Zera complained, "God, I'm starving, are you sure this place exists Cassian? Wait what's that?" She seemed almost excited." I don't know." I snapped part of it off and ate it. " Tastes pretty good to me, so it must be edible!" We kept walking. Slowly we found more of this, well, green stuff, and ate it. Finally we found something bigger, much, much bigger. " Woah, is that?" " No it can't be. They were all killed by the gas. Could this be, a tree?" but there was more than just one. There were countless trees, spanning the horizon. " We made it" I said Zera seemed happy. Good for her. At least one person makes it.

"Cassian do you really think this is it?" She did seem happy, but yet somewhat worried. "I honestly don't care, as long as I can eat this green stuff, I'm fine. Come on, There's probably a lot more where that came from." She followed, somewhat hesitantly. The vast amounts of green was absolutely amazing, and we found so much more food than we thought imaginable. From round red things to yellow things to disgusting brown mushy things, we found tons of food. Ok, not all of that list was food.

We also found a bunch of animals. "Damn this place is really paradise, isn't it Zera? I mean look at this, we hit the jackpot. Best part is we are all alone. It's just you and me, which means we can start fresh." Those were my last words, as I slowly hit the ground.
