Twenty-One

A ringing sound filled the silent void that had fallen upon the garden as the young man stepped back, words lodged in his throat, threatening to strangle him and that annoying heartbeat of his.

Small sparks flew around Anabella's arm and a small, red glow emitted from underneath her skin.

His eyes widened, small droplets of tears shining in the moonlight.

Flames, the color of his worst nightmares, danced together around her arm until the wind grasped onto them and they became mere flickers in the night.

A deep fear, one rooted in painful memories, filled Seonghwa's chest and he fell onto the ground, screams escaping his lips.

It was back and this time it was coming for him.

"Seonghwa.", Anabella reached forward, her face becoming a blur behind the scorching flames.

"Please. I don't want to end like my family.", he whispered, his lips trembling.

Her eyes filled with her own terror as her arms shook, all control lost from between her fingers.

She collapsed, only to scream at the sight of an oak tree, one that stood since the day she was born, bursting into flames.

Screams, from both Anabella and Seonghwa, rang out, disrupting any peace left within the garden.

The splashing of water drowned out the throbbing in his ears and as the smoke cleared, Seonghwa could make out San, his chest rising up and down aggressively, an empty bucket in his trembling hands.

"What did you do?", his voice shook, tears behind his words, as he turned to Anabella.

Seonghwa watched as Anabella simply shook her head, her mouth open but producing no words.

"Are you crazy?", San yelled, a vein popping out of the side of his neck.

"I-I'm sorry.", she whispered, turning back to Seonghwa, the apology clearly directed towards him.

Her crazed eyes were full of tears. Seonghwa grabbed and held her against his chest, his heart crashing against it.

"Do-Don't get upset at her. I pre-pressured her into telling me the truth.", Seonghwa wrapped a hand around her, his blood seeming to run cold.

San dropped the bucket and ran towards Anabella. "I'm not mad. I could never be mad at you, you idiot.", he placed a hand over her face.

She laughed, a nervous laugh full of confusion.

His voice trailed off as he pulled Anabella from Seonghwa into his own arms. "What could have happened, Anabella? You could have ended like that tree. You know you can't control it?", San whispered in her ear as he ran a hand down her hair.

"I know and I am so sorry.", she mumbled into his shoulder.

Seonghwa watched with his heart racing as loud sobs escaped her throat, echoing through the ominous sight and becoming part of the smoke that filled it.

"It's alright, Ember.", he rocked back and forth, whispering seemingly soothing words into her ear until she stopped crying.

"What in Sonar happened?", Hong Joong yelled as he and every other person that cared about Anabella ran out of the palace, bundled in blankets.

"Nothing. Anabella just got a little excited.", San smiled.

"The tree. It's gone.", Yeosang stepped forward, his eyes twinkling with tears at the sight of the tree he had grown up taking care of gone.

"I'm sorry.", she mumbled once again.

"Come on, let's get you to bed."

Seonghwa watched San lead Anabella to the door.
